Exeter Senior Center Receives Grant

Everyone at the Exeter Senior Center was excited to watch Roma Rhodes (center) and Evelyn Michl finish their bowling match. Roma recruited Norm Yound to help her beat Evelyn 140 to 138.

The Exeter Senior Center was the recent recipient of grant monies from the Mary Tous Foundation in Fairmont.

According to Fillmore County Senior Services Director Brenda Motis, the Senior Center Advisory board had "talked about having Mahoney House come and bring their Wii for the group here to try out but the TV we had here was not capable of hooking up and that conversation evolved to 'why don't we buy our own?' and they thought they should apply for the grant."

After estimating the costs of the purchase of a new flat screen TV along with the Wii and a DVD/VCR player they submitted their grant proposal and received the funds to purchase the complete package.

According to Motis, "We are trying to reach a different population of people. We want to get people up and doing more physical activity. When they leave here we want them to feel good about themselves and what's going on."

Of course, there is a still a learning curve with the Wii. The generation hanging out at the senior center isn't exactly video game friendly but several of them have computers and email regularly. That is part of the challenge of equipping the center with this new equipment.

Part of what made the Wii so attractive for the center was, "the many capabilities of the Wii. You can watch picture slide shows from a memory card and even create your own puzzle from a photo and then assemble it on the TV with the Wii. With all of the fitness and training options there a lot of different things you do with it and no one should ever get bored," explained Motis.

In the future the Center hopes to purchase additional remotes so that four can play at once, either bowling or doubles tennis, as well as additional games. They also plan to host Wii tournaments possibly pairing up seniors with their grandchildren or friends.

"We want to bring laughter and some silliness in the lives of the seniors in the area. We are trying to grown and encourage anyone in the community to come to the senior center, we would love to see them here," said Motis.

Exeter Care Center Farmer's Market Saturday

The Exeter Care Center will host a farmer's market this Saturday morning from 9 - 11. Residents will be selling baked goods as well as other items. Members of the community will also have goods to sell. Come enjoy the beautiful day and lots of goodies at the care center parking lot.

Exeter Care Center Hosts Ice Cream Social

The Exeter Care Center hosted an ice cream party last Wednesday afternoon to help the kids celebrate the end of summer.

Exeter Cub Scouts Pack 218 Enjoy Saltdogs Game

Saturday, August 8th, the Exeter Pack 218 members Eric Olsen, Joey Bartu, Peytan Brandt and Trystan Brandt went to the Saltdogs game in Lincoln at Haymarket Park.

First we lined up and waited to parade around the field with our pack flag. We were in the parade and marched around the field to across from the third base line.

It was Scout Night at the Saltdogs game and we stayed on the field until some other scouts did the flag salute and then the National Anthem was sung. Then we went to our seats.

Homer the Saltdog came to our section and we got an autograph. Then we had some snacks.

The Saltdogs won the game because of a big hitter. The score was tied until the last inning when one of the Saltdogs got home and scored the winning run.

After the Saltdogs won we ran around the bases and went home.

Exeter-Milligan School Welcomes Three Fresh Faces

Three teachers new to the Exeter-Milligan district are already hard at work getting ready for school to begin on Wedesday.

All were educated in Nebraska and are excited to share with our students what they have learned.

Shane Whitford

Mr. Shane Whitford will be the new music teacher for 7 - 12. He has a solid background in Music .

After graduating from Milford High School he attended Peru State earning a degree in Music Education K-12.

Most recently he taught at Southeast Consolidated but it merged with Humboldt/Table Rock school this year and he took the opportunity to find a job closer to his hometown.

Whitford has already begun teaching band lessons at school and is excited about the possibilities in Exeter. He wants to get the band "marching a little more. But my biggest goal is restoring pride to the band. To be proud of what we have accomplished and what we can do."

Whitford, his wife and two young daughters (2 and 8 months) are living close to family in Milford. They enjoy spending time together and watching movies.

Grant Gabel

Mr. Grant Gabel also joins the Exeter-Milligan upper school staff as a science teacher. Mr. Gabel graudated from Shelby High School and graduated from UNL with a BS in Education.

As he approaches this year he hopes to "create a good learning envicornment, get to know the students and have a fun year."

In his time off he enjoys golf, softball, and running.









Susan Wait

Ms. Susan Wait comes to us from Lincoln but her roots are in Gresham where she graduated from Benedict High School. She continued her education at UNL where she earned a Bachelor's degree and then received her Masters in Literacy from Concordia University. It will be great to add her skills as a reading specialist at the fourth grade teaching position.

Ms. Wait wants the fourth grade parents to know that she is always available. She is particularly excited about the new reading program that the elementary school is embarking upon this year. In her classroom she wants to work on "building community. As we build our own community we can become part of the bigger community of our school and our town."

As a teacher, Ms. Wait wants to role model being a good citizen as she lives in Milligan this year and teach her "students to be respoectful of their world and their part in it."

In her spare time Ms. Wait enjoys reading, photography and spending a lot of time with her two nieces in Beatrice.

Exeter Aquatic Center to remain open after school starts

The Exeter Village Board discussed the pool hours and through communication from pool manager Jackie Miller found that there was enough staff for her to have the pool staffed until Labor Day.
The week that school starts since school lets out early every day the pool will open at their regular time

The new hours after school starting the 24th will be:

M - F 4:00 - 8:00
Saturday 1:30 - 5:30
Sunday 1:30 - 5:30 and 6:30 - 8:30

Obituary Tom Schiefelbein

Tom was born in Friend, Ne. October 21, 1961 to Myron and Maxine Schiefelbein. He
passed away in Lincoln, Ne. following an accident in York, Ne. July 30, 2009. Tom was
the youngest of three children, Dan the oldest and Nancy.
Tom grew up in Friend but did attend High School in Exeter, Ne. after the family
moved there in 1976. He graduated in 1980 then attended Central Community College in
Hastings where he lived and worked.

In 1987 Tom married Patty Little. Patty and her daughter Michelle joined Tom to
live in Exeter. They had a daughter Natasha born in 1987. Natasha passed away after a
15 month battle with leukemia at the age of 17 months. Tom worked at Champion
Homes in York for 10 years before joining Hamilton-Sunstrand of York 12 years ago.
He worked at Sunstrand as a machinist. Tom has resided in York since his divorce in
2007.

Tom shared his life with Karna Latham and her daughters Ivory, Olinda, and
Meredith. Karna’s son Sheppard lives in Tennessee.

Tom loved the great outdoors as he enjoyed both bow and rifle hunting. He loved
music and attended concerts avidly. Tom enjoyed being the photographer behind the
camera but most of the photos he is in include pets which he loved dearly. Tom was a
master craftsman who recycled and fixed just about anything. He never missed a Husker
photo day.

He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter Natasha Kaye and his faithful
dog Jake.

His survivors include parents Maxine and Myron Schiefelbein, Exeter, brother
Dan and his wife Darla, (Columbus) their children, Adam,(Alma) Erin and her husband
Jeff Eickhoff. (Albion), sister, Nancy, her husband Roger their and children Jack and
Joseph of Lincoln.

Funeral services were conducted from the United Church of Christ in Exeter, Nebraska
on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 with Pastor Michael Becker officiating. Diane Hanson
accompanied the congregation who sang “Amazing Grace” and “On Eagles Wings.”
Recorded selections were “You Are Not Alone” and “Beautiful Day.” Casket bearers
were Jack Schiefelbein, Todd Schiefelbein, Jim Gibbs, Gary Bladder, Jesse Eberhardt
and Tony Kreifels. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery with Farmer Funeral Home in
charge of the arrangements. Memorials are directed to the family.

Get Ready! Get Set! Get Forever Fit!

The Exeter Forever Fit program will be starting up again the middle of September. A specific date has not been set yet, but look for more information soon. Jeanine Krejci will be the instructor for this exercise group. In order for you to participate in the class you need to have a Physicians release sheet signed and bring it with you to the first class. Each year you need to have the Physicians slip signed that he/she approves of you taking the Forever Fit class. Forms are available at the Exeter Senior Center or if you would like one mailed to you, please contact Brenda Motis at Fillmore County Senior Services. Death Notice Tommy D. Schiefelbein

Tommy D. Schiefelbein, age 47 of York, Nebraska formerly of Exeter died in Lincoln on Thursday July 30, 2009. He was a member of the Exeter High School class of 1980.

He is survived by his parents, Myron & Maxine of Exeter, his girlfriend,Karna Latham & her children Sheppard, Ivory, Olinda & Meredith all of York, brother & sister-in-law, Dan & Darla, Columbus, NE, sister & brother-in-law, Nancy & Roger Bruner, Lincoln, NE, niece, Erin & husband Jeff Eickhoff, nephews Adam Stottler, Jack Bruner & Joseph Bruner and former wife Patty her daughter Michelle and her sons Wesley & Trevin

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in Exeter with Pastor Michael Becker officiating.

Visitation will begin Monday 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6 :00 to 8:00 at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter.

Did you know that battery recycling is available in Exeter?

Courtesy of Public Health Solutions, Exeter has a box available for you to use to recycle your regular household batteries. This will hold all types of AAA, AA, C, D, 9V and other household batteries. Batteries from portable phones and cell phones may also be recycled as well as hearing aid batteries.

The box (and several more boxes) are on hand at the Exeter Public Library for you to place your batteries in. Please make sure you read and follow the directions that are available with the box.
