Exeter-Milligan Update: Reading Buddies
Language Arts Fall Update
By Brandi Perez, Exeter-Milligan 9-12 Language Arts Instructor
There have been a few different things going on in each of the ELA grade levels recently. English 9 students just started reading To Kill a Mockingbird and are noticing patterns of sibling relationships from the book and in their own lives. The freshmen are also focusing on how people are defined by their actions, and under what circumstances. English 10 students just finished up their Children’s Book Unit and read to the kindergarten class. Since then, students have been in their myPerspectives curriculum book working on the unit titled “Inside the Nightmare.” They have been reading spooky stories by many authors, such as Edgar Allen Poe and talking about what scares them. English 11 students are now reviewing their parts of speech and will soon be in their myPerspectives curriculum. English 12 students just finished their unit within their Perspectives curriculum about reflecting on society. The seniors are now working on their writing within their grammar book. The journalism students are hard at work with their new website, as well as creating graphics for the winter sports season.
Pictured are the sophomores with their kindergarten reading buddies:

Exeter-Milligan Update: Art
Art Update
By Lisa Kanode, Exeter-Milligan K-12 Art Instructor
In our art classes from kindergarten to twelfth grade, we have been working on a variety of projects. However, we decided to begin the year with a special project that would represent unity. Each class contributed to a painting, and when we combined all the pieces, it beautifully portrayed how our school demonstrates unity.
Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky and his famous Concentric Circle artwork, we painted in a similar style. We discussed the concept of concentric circles, such as the ripples created when a pebble is dropped in water, the rings inside a tree trunk, and the layers of an onion. We wanted our masterpiece to symbolize wholeness and interconnectedness, serving as a physical representation of a place where stories and experiences originate, and to which they are historically linked.
As a school-wide project, the process of assembling the paintings turned out wonderfully (pictured in the collage).
Other Activities happening include pottery wheel experiences and color theory with painting techniques. We are also focusing on the basic elements and principles of art and design.
