Written by Paul Martin | The Sophomore American History class recently completed a unit on Westward Movement. Our EMF History students traveled to Homestead National Monument near Beatrice and Rock Creek Station near Fairbury on Wednesday, September 23rd . The morning was spent touring Homestead National Historical Park’s visitor center and viewing the movie Land of Dreams, exploring the prairie using GPS handheld devices and compasses to find historical points of interest, and visiting the Freeman one-room schoolhouse. After lunch, the students viewed the new orientation video in the visitor center before retracing a portion of the Oregon and Pony Express Trails at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park near Faibury. Students also visited the site of the legendary shooting of David McCanless by Wild Bill Hickok.
