Timberwolves take care of business in Lawrence Nelson
The Timberwolves came out on top 66-24 at Lawrence on Friday night. Fortunately the score was 48-8 at half time so the clock ran the second half. The temps were in the 40's but that didn't stop Exeter-Milligan. Above Timberwolf Derek Luzum chases down Raider #23 Wyatt Thayer. Pictured above is this’ years third graders at Exeter-Milligan doing a Nearpod presentation on their iPads. Nearpod allows students to participate in a class lesson utilizing their iPads and As they answer questions, I am able to get their answers instantly. The kids really enjoy using their ipads and being an active participant in lessons. The Nearpad app is just one way students are able to utilize technology to learn new information.

Exeter-Milligan Receives Donations from Our Family Labels
Exeter-Milligan Elementary Principal Laura Kroll received a
check from Greg Yound, owner of Greg’s Market in Exeter from the Labels for
Learning program. UPC Bar Codes were collected from Our Family products
sold at Greg’s Market and were turned in to Our Family. The first check
of $75.00 was received. There are collection containers in several
different locations around town and they can also be turned in at Greg’s Market
or at the school office. Another batch of labels has been sent in and
another donation will be received soon.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Computer Applications
In
Phyllis Severson's Computer Applications at Exeter-Milligan, the students have
been learning to program using coding. They started with completing the lessons at code.org and have moved on to code using
Scratch. The students made "play doh pianos"
using Scratch and MakeyMakey boards. They wrote the code and then hooked up the
boards with cables attached to play doh.
When the play doh is tapped the
notes play creating a "piano". Pictured is Sydney Hall playing her "piano"

Exeter-Milligan's Outdoor Education Day

The Exeter-Milligan second grade class got an extra day of
summer this year.
The students thought they spent all day Friday, September
26th playing in the park but in reality they learned all day long.
The annual Outdoor Education Day has paired Marla Weber's
second graders with the 11th graders in Lorie Sliefert's Biology II class to
learn from each other for a day each fall.
This year was a little different as Sliefert only had one
student in her class, Janey Due. Due, was in the second grade class that
Weber introduced the program to second graders 10 years ago.
Sliefert decided to invite her Physics students to
participate and they were eager to prepare for the event since they had taught
at the event the prior year.
Each year, the high school students spend several weeks
choosing and planning different outdoor themed stations to present to the
second graders. Weber initially created the units, but invited the high
school students to add their own personal "twist" to each center and
also develop some new centers.
All day long the high school students guide groups of
the second graders through the different units. They leave around five
minutes at the end of each session for the students to journal about what they
learned in the unit. There is even space in their journal to draw
pictures of what they learned in the unit.
To Weber, "It's a win-win situation. Having high
school students help lead the centers gives the elementary students role models
to look toward. It helps encourage younger students to pursue their dreams and
to work hard just like the high school students.”
New this year was a station called "Attributes"
which was a game of tag based on the different attributes of animals. The
students were divided into groups of different attributes like flying, running
creatures, or crawling etc. and then the person who is it was in the middle and
called the attributes. Those who belonged to the group that was called
ran past the person who was it to avoid being tagged.
The second graders created an “ocean” in a bottle with
water, oil, shells, sand and food coloring along with making a rainstick.
The students started the day by measuring their shadow and
then had another measuring session right before their day ended. They
learned about why their measurement was shorter at the end of the day.
During the day the students learned about the growth rings
on a tree and then made the comparison to their own life, making a drawing of
the different stages of growth in their own lives.
Another game the students enjoyed is called bat and
moth. The bat is “it” in this modified game of Marco Polo and the bat is
looking for the moth. They also play a version of the game where some of
the moths have ingested DDT and if the bat gets those moths then it dies.
This helps the students understand how dangerous chemicals can be.
“TIME is always the aspect that challenges students. Grade 2
students are challenged to complete their journal writing in the limited time,”
according to Weber.
This year having the event on a shortened day limited the
amount of time the students had for the scavenger hunt. Next year Weber
hopes to extend the scavenger hunt and use handheld GPS units to add an extra
learning step to the hunt.
Another new component to the event this year was the
invitation to the second graders parents to come at various times during the
day to observe the activities their children were participating in.
