FCCLA- Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) projects are
well
underway. So far topics include Autism, Stem Cell Research,
Date
Rape, Cyberbullying.
We will be scheduling some work evenings throughout the next
few
months. We are also looking for volunteer projects that
would enable
the FCCLA girls to get some community service hours. If you
have some
ideas or opportunities, please let us know.

Exploratory FCS 9-
Students are immersed in the unit of dating violence.
Resources were
purchased at the RESPECT conference this summer. This unit
of study
is required from the Department of Education and is a
concept that was previously taught but now it is at a deeper
level.

Students are taking part in discussions, viewing DVD's
about dating
violence, Tips for Dating Safety, role playing,
interviewing, looking
at statistics and learning about healthy dating patterns.
This unit
of study

will lead into human sexuality/ abstinence and STD's. At
the end of
this unit, the students will create a glogster or a prezi
presentation.

FCS II-

Students have just presented their visuals for their
budgeted trip
itinerary. Within this project they become familiar with the
types of
resources they were using (human, material, community). They
were
responsible for creating a planned trip to their desired
destiny and
create a visual, stay within their budget and determine how
they will
use all the resources and money. Their next unit of study
will focus
on Decision-Making and Overcoming Obstacles and Challenges.

Foods and Nutrition-

Students have provided a meal for the Becker family and will
be
providing a meal for the Stride family as well. Students had
fun
during the Halloween season with each carving their own
pumpkins using
detailed carving. The students than displayed their pumpkins
during
the lunch time for all the student body to view. They than
found
creative recipes for the roasting of their seeds and each
class shared
with each other.

Students enjoyed a unit of "Fair Foods". They were able to
make deep
fat fried dill pickles, snickers, cookies, mozzarella cheese
sticks,
corn dogs, corn nuggets and funnel cakes. Good thing this is
the only
time we use the deep fat fryer. Now that we have that fun
lab done,
on to healthier cooking. The Thanksgiving season has both
classes
planning a huge meal. The classes will be preparing a noon
meal where
all 17 students will be able to enjoy the great traditional
Thanksgiving meal. A few guest teachers will be asked to
join us.

Following this, they will be having a soup competition
between each
other. Through this competition, the students learn knife
skills,
healthy preparation of soups, and have fun throughout the
competition.

Adult Living-

Students have focused on mental attitude and health,
positive and
negative stressors, and depression.

Discussions have included ways to improve one's mental
health, relieve
stress and ways to handle depression and warning signs if
depression
is not lessened. The next unit of study will be one on
decision-
making skills and how values and morals play a role in their
decision-
making. Information that was shared by Mr. Wilbeck will be
introduced
into this unit. This includes the 21 precepts for happiness
in life,
and the knowledge of their human virtues.

Child Development-

Preparing for parenting is the focus. We will take a look at
the
expenses of raising a child, learn about the Family and
Medical Leave
Act, and ART(assisted reproductive technologies

FCS 7-

Students have just finished up on their "Egg Baby"
projects, where
they were responsible for taking care of an egg or eggs for
a 4 day
period. Let's just say some were not cut out for
parenthood quite
yet. Some students left their eggs at the daycare after PE
class and
that meant an overnight stay in the FCS room, some forgot to
bring
them back to school. Good thing they didn't have a real
baby! We are
now focusing on toddlers and preschoolers. Students just had
a little
golden book book review and presentations. We will focus on
activities and characteristics of each of these age groups.

Pictured is the 7th grade class with their "kids".

Patiently waiting for Father Kuffel to give the blessing so the Salad Luncheon could begin.

Fellowship is a big part of the Exeter St Stephens Altar Society Salad Luncheon and Card Party as some ladies only get to see each other once a year at this annual event.
