Brandt Attends Hershey State Finals

Trystan Brandt, son of Roger and Dianne Brandt of Exeter, participated in the Hershey's Track and Field state finals held at Grand Island on June 8. He received 1^st place in the standing long jump, 2^nd place in the 100m dash, and 2^nd place in the 200m dash in the13 and 14 year old age division. Trystan qualified to attend the event by receiving 1^st place in the standing long jump, 100m dash, and 200m dash at the district meet held at York in May. Top finishers at the state meet will be notified in mid-July if they are selected to participate on the regional team at the Hershey's North American finals held at Hershey, PA in August.

Exeter's New Postmaster Kathy Stych

Change has been the operative word at the Exeter Post Office recently.

In April, the United States Postal Service shortened the operation hours at the Exeter office changing it from a full 40-hour a week office to a six hour office retaining the Saturday hours.

Many of the post offices in rural Nebraska have had their hours drastically cut which also required current postmasters of smaller locations to relocate to post offices in larger communities.

In October 2012 Exeter Postmaster Vicki Ozenbaugh accepted the postmaster position in Sutton (where she had been the officer in charge (OIC) for several years).  While Ozenbaugh served in Sutton Exeter relied on several OIC’s including Margie Johnson and Lynn Strate.  Although the post office functioned as it was supposed to the USPS technically had no postmaster in Exeter and in April finally declared the Postmaster position open for applications.

Current postmasters looking for larger postal offices were the first that were allowed to apply for this position.  With openings in Friend, Fairmont, Exeter and Beaver Crossing locally, there were lots of options to choose from.

Exeter was lucky enough to steal Kathy Stych from Cordova.  Stych applied for the Exeter position, just 10 miles from her Cordova home, and started training for the new position with Strate on Wednesday, June 12^th.

Stych was the Postmaster in Cordova from 1998 to the present and filled in at the post office for a number of years before becoming postmaster.  She assured customers that there would be “No changes since the April hour change and no change in service.  I’m just another friendly helpful face behind the window.”

For Stych, however, there will be a few changes.  “This is a lot bigger office for me.  Some of the equipment is a little different, I didn’t have a meter before or a rural route and the computer is newer.”

Stych had in office training last week and always has fellow postmasters to call on if she needs extra help.

At home in Cordova, Stych has been married to husband Bernie for 42 years.  They have three children and eight grandchildren who live in Omaha and Kansas City.  The Stych’s are active members at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cordova and although they no longer own a business in Cordova they are still very involved in the community.

Exeter-Milligan Athletes Chosen for Post Seasons Play

 Two Exeter-Milligan Seniors are getting ready to play in the 36th annual Eight-Man All-Star Football Game on the East Team.  Read more about Blake Papik and Robbie Androyna  by clicking on their names. Exeter-Milligan Seniors Jackie Luzum and Taylor Erdkamp were chosen to play on the winning South team in the Tribune Volleyball Classic last Thursdays.  The link will take you to the article in York News Times.

Death Notice: Carla Due

Carla Due
(October 2, 1913 - June 16, 2013)

Funeral services for Carla will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cordova. Pastor Brenda Pfeifly will officiate the service. 

Graveside services will follow the funeral in the Zastrow Cemetery.

Visitation for Carla will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter.

Memorials are directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church or the Exeter Senior Center.

Exeter-Milligan Junior High Choir Receives Awards

These awards were presented at the Exeter-Milligan Honors Night:

JUNIOR HIGH CHOIR

The junior high choir performed at the Veteran’s Day program, Christmas concert & spring concert this year.  They also participated in the CRC Vocal Clinic at Hampton in February.  Most of the students sang at the Exeter Care Center in May.  Four students were selected to the Meridian JH Honor Band.  Eight students competed with the high school choir at MUDECAS & DMC (District Music Contest.)
