The Exeter-Milligan first grade classroom has been busy learning this year.  They chose the word “caring” to emphasize this year.

Part of the learning process for the students was to read the book “Fill Your Bucket” which helps the students learn how giving and receiving kind words and actions can fill their personal buckets.  Each student has a small bucket that they can put a yarn pom pom in whenever they give or receive a kind word or deed.

The students had a very special celebration on the 100^th day of school and made a project with 100 items, they played special 100 games, decorated the hallways with futuristic forecasts of faculty and staff pictures at 100 years old.

Each year the first grade classroom has walked to the Exeter Senior Center to have special activities with the seniors.  They often read together or practice math with the first graders.  They have also come to school to have lunch with the students.

This past fall the first graders held a special grandparents day celebration.  They honored their grandparents with songs and crafts.

Their teacher, Mrs. Sharon Lott, has always had a special week recognizing each student with a poster all about them on the door for the week.  This year, she took it a little further calling it Fantastic First Grader.  Each Friday, the students take turns being the Fantastic First Grader.  They have a list of options they can chose from including eating lunch in the classroom with a  friend and watching tv.  They can sit in Mrs. Lott’s chair or chew gum, too.

Each week the students have a mystery reader come in and read at least one book to them.  During the day, Mrs. Lott gives them clues about who the mystery reader is to see if they can guess.

Mrs. Lott has tendered her resignation this year and is looking forward to her retirement after 38 years in the Milligan and Exeter-Milligan school districts.  This class has been a joy to her, “I have greatly enjoyed this group of first graders. They are energetic and fun and always ready to learn."

State Senator to Hold Town Meeting In Exeter On Saturday

Senator Laura Ebke will hold a town hall meeting in Exeter tomorrow, Saturday, March 19th from 10:00 until 11:30 at the Exeter Senior Center.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Spanish Update

We are just getting ready to begin the 4th quarter. It seems as though this school year has been flying by! In Spanish 1 class, we are currently learning the names of family members and how to describe your family. I always enjoy this unit because it gives me the opportunity to learn more about the students’ families. They have just completed a project where they each made their own celebrity family trees. I think they really enjoyed that project because they were able to use their creativity. They are also beginning their very first novel in Spanish. It’s always exciting to see the gains that the beginning Spanish students make their first year learning the language. I’m hoping this last quarter of the year is the most successful one yet!

Exeter-Milligan Update: FCS/FCCLA Happenings

Exeter-Milligan FCS/FCCLA Happenings

EMHS FCCLA STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) participants presented their STAR projects at the annual Speech/STAR night which was held on Monday, March 7th.  Those attending had an opportunity to hear the FCCLA STAR projects as well as the speech teams presentations.  Those presenting their STAR projects were:  Left to Right:  Daisy Kanode, Hannah Horne, Caitlin Murphy, Haylee Sheffield, Brianna Beatham and Samantha Horne.  

Daisy's project:  Recycle & Redesign Project of:  Down with the Denium, featured her 3 couch pillows, 5 minute oral presentation, her sharing information about the planning process, design sketch, time log, material profile, story board and information about the importance about recycling.  Daisy will compete at State Leadership Conference.

Hannah and Samantha Horne:  Focus on Children:  Always Be Clean, Practice Good Hygiene focused on the importance of proper hygiene amongst the elementary students.  They were able to distribute 85 hygiene kids through the generosity of local businesses for their contributions.  The girls also went into the elementary classrooms and taught some helpful lessons about hygiene. 

Caitlin Murphy presented her Focus on Children project of:  Yours To Keep.  It's focus was on the distribution of school supplies to our K-6 grade students.  These supplies were donated by the Methodist Church and community members of both Exeter and MIlligan.  She taught a helpful lesson on responsibility of school supplies to the 3-6 graders and made monthly visits to each of the classrooms to distribute school supplies.  Caitlin qualified to present her project at State Leadership Conference in April.

Haylee Sheffield's Illustrated Talk project features the Royal Family Kids Camp.  This project focused on the importance of confronting abuse and changing lives, the history of the camp, focus and mission of the camp and her participation at the camp during the summer of 2015.  Haylee will compete at State Leadership with this project.

Brianna Beatham's Illustrated Talk project focused on Multiple Sclerosis, a disease her mother, Billie Jo is living with.  Her projects focus was to make an awareness of the disease, symptoms and statistics of MS and she also raised over $350 during an organized orange out.  These funds will be sent to the MIdwest Chapter for Multiple Sclerosis.  

All STAR participants will attend State Leadership Conference April 3-5 in Lincoln, NE.  Caitlin, Haylee and Daisy will compete on Monday, April 4th, while Hannah, Samantha, Brianna and Tara have volunteered to do a community service project at the People's City Mission.  

FACS News:

FACS 7- The students have just finished up their chef aprons and will be using them in food labs.  

Foods & Nutrition-  Students are learning about the nutrients more in depth, with this learning, they are also in the lab preparing various foods within these nutrient categories.

FCS II- Hear the sewing machines buzzing?  The girls are constructing useful items for their everyday life.  

Child Development- Our focus has been on the toddler, learning about the physical, intellectual and social/emotional development within this age group.  

EXP FACS 9- Students are finishing up their EverFI Financial Literacy curriculum and will now focus on their budgeting project.  

Upcoming events:  FCCLA will help with the Exeter Community Easter Egg Hunt on March 20th @ 1:30 p.m. in Exeter at the school

FCCLA State Leadership Conference will be held in Lincoln on April 3- April 5

Hwy 6 Roadside Cleanup will be scheduled in April.

Exeter-Milligan Update: MakerSpace

MakerSpace Begins at EM

Elementary students at Exeter-Milligan participate in MakerSpace. What is MakerSpace? It is a place and a time provided for creativity and innovation to occur. Students have the freedom to tinker, design, create, build and even collaborate with fellow students. MakerSpaces have become quite popular across the United States. At Exeter-Milligan, students have the opportunity to participate in this after-school monthly event. Resources to build and create with are provided through donations from district patrons and a few purchased items. Students peruse the materials available (cardboard, ribbon, parts of electronic tools, paint, etc) and make choices about what they want to create during the time provided. Each month on the fourth Tuesday between 3:45 and 5:00 students can use the time to make whatever they want. Sponsors for this time are teachers Lisa Soukup and Marla Weber. Themes for each month are provided and help students think of what they are going to create, but they are not limited to following the theme. Almost anything goes at MakerSpace.
