Household Hazardous Waste-HHW Collection in Fillmore County

A free household hazardous waste collection was held at the County Shop on Saturday, April 25th.  Items such as paint, cleaning products, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, used oil antifreeze, batteries, florescent bulbs and mercury items were brought to the collection by Fillmore County residents.  Despite the drizzly weather there was a steady stream of people bringing their waste to be disposed of properly.

A team from Red Willow County provides the expertise in collecting and then recycling the products.  About 12 local volunteers helped with the collection as well including County Supervisors, County employees, and Brandi Domling, Vern Kendall, and Robyn Sorenson members of the FCDC leadership class along with Patt Lentfer the FCDC Executive Director.

The collection was sponsored by the Trailblazer RC & D, the Fillmore County Supervisors, the Fillmore County Development Corporation, and the Little Blue NRD.  The financial support is provided through a grant to the Trailblazer RC & D from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Litter Recut ion and Recycling Grant Program.

“Citizens really appreciate this service of providing a collection to dispose of HHW correctly,” according to Patt Lentfer.  She gets calls frequently of when there will be a HHW collection in the area.
