Exeter-Milligan Update: Family Consumer Science Classroom

On March 2nd, several FCCLA members sported t-shirts to
support the "Spread the Word, to End the Word.  The
purpose of this day was to raise an awareness for the
useless use of the word "retarded" and the negative
connotation associate with this word.  Many members
previously attended the National Special Olympics and gained
an understanding that mentally and physically challenged
individuals do not like that label when talking about their
ability.  Meredith Emshoff's FCCLA STAR project was the
emphasis for this activity, as she brought an awareness for
autistic individuals and the increased use of the word,
retarded when identifying people with disabilities.  Through
her project, the student body was made aware of the
characteristics of someone with autism and that society is
so fast to label people, even if it is with the incorrect
word.

Foods & Nutrition hosted their annual "Chili Cook-off".
Students paired up with a peer and created what they
believed to be the "winning" chili.  Selected faculty
members served as the judges and the results were:
1st Place- White Chili- Caroline Harre, Mariah Ruhl and

2nd Place- Jalapeño Chili- Colton Smith
3rd Place- Hot & Spicy Chili- Spencer Bures and Cody Soukup
4th Place- Random Chili- Blake Mark and Jake Wilkens
5th Place- Prize Winning Chili- MiKayla Ruhl and Cassie
Harre.

Chef aprons were awarded to the 1st Place winners and edible
prizes were given to all.
CONGRATULATIONS to these young chefs.

Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves chosen for CRC All Conference Teams

Two Exeter-Milligan seniors from the Girls Basketball team Heather Pribyl and Kelsey Moore were chosen to the First Team of the CRC All Conference Team. Exeter-Milligan Freshman Nolan White was the only member of the Boys Basketball Team to be recognized on the First Team.  Exeter-Milligan Senior Zach Jensen received an honorable mention.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Math with Computers

Exeter Cub Scouts Head to District Pinewood Derby

For the second year in a row the Milford Cub Scout Pack 290 hosted over 100 Cub Scouts and their families for the annual Prairie Winds District Pinewood Derby.

 

Cub Scouts who have been successful at their pack pinewood derby can participate in the district event.  There are four categories the Scouts can choose from Stock Race and Stock Show, Modified Race and Modified Show.

 

This year the District added an Open Class race for anyone who has a pinewood derby car but is no longer a Cub Scout and also for siblings.

 

Five Exeter scouts chose to go to the District event.  Clint Oldehoeft entered the stock race, Braden Capek showed his car in the modified show, Peytan Brandt entered the modified race, Ben Bartu showed in the modified show and Joey Bartu showed in the stock show.

 

The racing started immediately with many of the scouts running their cars in multiple heats.  Scouts who chose to show their car registered and then were interviewed by three judges from the Cornhusker Council. During the interview the scouts were asked questions about the design, styling and knowledge of tools used to make the car. The majority of points are awarded for knowledge and participation in the construction of the car.

 

During the event, Pack 218 of Exeter, hosted a belt loop clinic for the scouts who were waiting their turn to race or show their cars. Scouts had the opportunity to earn beltloops in Geography, Nutrition, Map and Compass, and Communication.

 

The race results were announced first with Nick Andrews of Geneva Pack 175 coming in first in Stock race, Jake Witter of David City Pack 268 took first in the Modified race division with Joey Bartu of Exeter Pack 218 winning the Car Stock show division for the second year in a row and Cade Houk of Milford Pack 290 winning the Modified Show division.  Best of Show was chosen by a vote of the crowd and the judges and was awarded to Jake Nichols of Geneva Pack 175.

 

Ready to deliver meals to five different families in Exeter who have been affected by cancer are the Girl Scouts in Troop 390.  The are pictured front row from the left, Macy Due, Janey Erdkamp, Josie Hulse, Kaitlyn Vavra, and back row from the left are Hannah Beethe and Tara Mueller.

Exeter Girl Scout Troop 390 decided to bake up a storm on Thursday afternoon to help complete a badge that started with the power of one and helped them grow to learn about the power of a community.

 

The girls, fourth and fifth graders at Exeter-Milligan gathered on Thursday afternoon to make meals for families in town who have recently been affected by cancer.

 

The Junior Girl Scouts brainstormed looking for a project to finish their Junior Journey Award, Agent of Change.  The badge starts with a small circle to represent the power of one. The next level of the badge is a small ring around which represents the power of a team and the final part of the badge is the power of the community.

 

As the group pondered some options for this final section of their badge they thought of those in the community who are dealing with cancer. Fifth grader Janey Erdkamp expressed what the group felt, "We thought it would be good because we all like to cook and we thought it was a good idea."

 

So with an early out at school on Thursday they decided to use the home ec room at school to prepare their dishes.  Also in fifth grade, Kaitlyn Vavra explained their menu, "We put out a lot of ideas but we all like Italian so we thought that would work well."

 

The started with baking homemade chocolate chip cookies, planning to make a dozen for each family.  They also made lasagna, garlic bread and added a bag of salad to each box.

 

After the meals were cooked and boxed the girls took the opportunity to visit the families and deliver a hot homemade supper along with a smile and the knowledge of how they can help a whole community.

 

 

Exeter-Milligan School Update: Elementary Spring Concert Coming March 22

"Get Goin' Green" will be presented by the Exeter-Milligan elementary students on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Milligan Gymnasium.  The K-6 students will sing many eco-friendly songs.  The 5th and 6th grade bands will each perform.  The 4th grade class will play the recorders and the 3rd grade class will play the boomwhackers.  Please join us for an evening of upbeat, exciting music that encourages you to take care of our planet!

Exeter-Milligan Update - Physics

The Second Annual Exeter-Milligan Physics Class Race and Crash Challenge was a "smashing" success.

Students in Ms. Sliefert's Physics class had to design and build a car for both speed and crashworthiness using the supplied wheels and only 3 sheets of paper. Cars could not have a mass more than 30 grams. and could not have a width larger than 6.5 cm. On race day students determined whose car was the fastest.
Heather's car left everyone in the dust. On Crash Day, students had to put an egg in their car. The cars had to be designed in such a way that when it hit a hall the egg still survived. Amanda's egg was the sole survivor. Everyone seemed to enjoy the Challenge.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Mrs. Myers' Reading Group

The Knights and Princesses of the Reading Table (Mrs. Kara
Myers reading group at Exeter-Milligan) continue to
"battle" their reading foes.  Everyday is packed full of
reading increasingly difficult words and building our
reading fluency so we can take on the next reading check-out
"dragon".  As of today, they have mastered 18
"duels" with such dragons (check-outs).  Some have been
difficult, but this tough bunch has persevered and won the
battle.  We don't only focus on reading either!  They have
been hard at work learning such things as writing complete
sentences and using a capital and period, analogies, and
synonyms.  They are always looking forward to their next
"quest".
