Exeter-Milligan Update: High School English

Found: Poetry in Literature and Life
by Rhoda Wahl, E-M English Instructor

While students at Exeter-Milligan School are reading good stories, they are also discovering that poetry is often disguised as prose. Those seemingly endless rows of sentences, and pages of paragraphs, are bursting with poems just waiting to be found.  Found Poems, in fact, are poems created from words and phrases taken from text.

While reading Alas Babylon, by Pat Frank, American Literature students discovered that the description of the setting (Fort Repose, FL) could also be described poetically.

Fort Repose
By Meredith Emshoff

A river town
in Central Florida
Riverfront estates
with boats tied to docks
idyllic life
for Lt. Randolph Rowzee Peyton
Ordered to protect river from Indians
shot game
caught fish
instead.

Freshmen English students are currently studying the elements of poetry, and experimented with rhyme schemes by writing parallel poems.  Parallel poems are written in the same style, and sometimes the same theme, as other poems that interest us.  The poem they paralleled is “Sick”  by Shel Silverstein.

Sick
By Jack Dinneen & Janey Due

“I cannot go to school today,”
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I am too tired to get up.
I think I’m going to throw up.
My skin is very itchy;
My eye is really twitchy.
My joints won’t even bend.
I think it may be the end.
There’s a clot in my bloodstream;
This is very extreme.
I have a very fast heartbeat,
And I have very cold feet.
I just got out of the shower,
But I still don’t have any power.

WAIT! Today is Saturday.
I feel well enough to play!”

All students in Mrs. Wahl’s English classes are reading books, and journaling about the elements of fiction. This quarter, they are describing the character traits of the protagonist in a biographical poem. Maybe you’ve read one of these books, and will recognize these characters.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Elementary Student Learn Math

Pictured from left to right are Exeter-Milligan third graders Braden Capek, Katelyn Babula, and Briana Capek.  This year, the elementary at Exeter-Milligan has implemented the Saxon Math Program.  So far this year, we have covered many topics including identifying shapes.  In this particular activity, students were asked to construct and draw a design given different shaped pattern blocks.  They were given certain directions and only able to use given shapes.  Their creativity shined with many different ideas and patterns.  In this picture you can see students collaborating on their designs.

FCDC Announces Deadline Exetension

The Homeownership Opportunity Program (HOP) to provide down payment subsidies to Home-buyers for the purchase of existing homes within Fillmore County has been extended to March 22, 2013.

By the contract with NDED, the program had a formal completion date of September 22, 2012.  However, the Fillmore County Development Corporation (FCDC), under a Subrecipient agreement with Fillmore County, committed to meeting the target plan of completing at least 14 successful loan closings (and minor rehabilitation) for homebuyers.  So far there have been eight loan closings with minor rehabilitation.

Therefore, the FCDC asked for a longer time period in which to complete the program.  The FCDC asked for a 6-month continuation and a budget amendment transferring HOME funds from the Downpayment Assistance Activity to the Housing Rehabilitation Activity.  The FCDC received word last week from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development that the program will now have a completion date of March 22, 2013 and $25,000 has been transferred from the downpayment assistance activity to the housing rehabilitation activity.

Eligible applicants include persons/families looking to purchase a home in Fillmore County and whose incomes are 80% or lower than the median household incomes of Fillmore County, NE, adjusted for family size.  For example, a family of four with a combined household income of $45,600 or less may qualify.  Other applicant eligibility criteria include:
·         Home being purchased must be the principal residence of the buyer
·         Completion of a Homeownership Training Program
·         Creditworthiness

The purpose of the Homeownership Opportunity Program (HOP) in Fillmore County is to provide financial assistance for the purchase of existing single-family residential housing units which are safe, decent, sanitary and affordable to low and moderate income persons/families-buyers.  The program is funded by HOME Investment Partnership funds awarded to Fillmore County by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

For information, or to request a program brochure and application, contact Patt Lentfer, Executive Director of FCDC at 402-759-4910, email: lentfer.fcdc@genevamail.com or by mail at:  1032 G Street, Geneva, NE  68361.  The information and an application may also be found on the FCDC website, www.fillmorecountydevelopment.org/Living---Working.html

Exeter-Milligan News: Psychology Class

Mr. Jordan Marr’s senior psychology class is currently studying about human behavior.  For this lesson, each student created a poster, depicting his or her personality through the use of images. In the picture, Madeleine Ensrud is sharing with the class her poster and answering student questions.  The students will continue their study of behavior by creating a survey and participating in a naturalistic observation experiment.
