TROOP 390 EARNS GIRL SCOUT BRONZE AWARD

Hannah Beethe, Macy Due, Janey Erdkamp, Josie Hulse, Tara Mueller, and Kailtlyn Vavra, the Girl Scouts in Troop 390, in Exeter, NE completed the requirements for a Junior Girl Scout’s highest award, the Girl Scout Bronze Award in June of 2011.  A recognition ceremony was held for them on October 23, 2011 at the Exeter Fire Hall with their families, principal, and teachers invited to help them celebrate.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award recognizes a girl’s commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life. Each of these girls has achieved the high ideals and goals expressed by Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girl Scout movement in 1912.  To earn the Bronze Award each girl needed to complete a Journey book and volunteer at least 20 hours on a service project for the Exeter community.

This Girl Scout troop began working toward their Girl Scout Bronze Award in September, 2010 and finished in June, 2011.  To earn the award, they had to design and carry out activities to show their promise to help others, improve their community and world, and become the best they could be.  To complete the requirement for volunteer community service, the girls volunteered at Lori Ruhl Walford’s benefit which was held in the Exeter-Milligan Public School gym.  They also planned, donated, purchased, prepared, and delivered complete homemade meals to five families in the Exeter community that were dealing with cancer.  This project was one they decided as a group that they were interested in working on together.

The girls are all students of Exeter-Milligan Public School.  Due is currently a 5^th grader and Beethe, Erdkamp, Hulse, Mueller, and Vavra are 6^th graders.  Macy’s parents are Travis and Sherri Due of Cordova.  Josie’s parents are Roxy Hulse of Exeter and Billie Hulse of York.  Hannah’s parents are Mark and Jane Beethe; Janey’s parents are Paul and Becky Erdkamp; and Tara’s parents are John and Anita Mueller all of Exeter.  Kaitlyn’s parents are Alan and Carrie Vavra of Milligan.

Exeter Milligan Update: Christmas Program

The Exeter-Milligan sixth grade class has been busy preparing for this year's program called "This Is Your Life, Santa Claus!"  The concert will be held on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Exeter site gymnasium.  All elementary students will be performing during the concert, beginning with the fifth and sixth grade bands.  They will be followed by the kindergarten, first, and second grade classes.  The musical will end the evening. It will feature the third, fourth, and fifth grade classes each on their own song.  The sixth grade students have all of the character parts and even a few solos.  Many sixth grade students also have additional duties in the production of the show.  Piano solos will begin the evening at around 6:35. Please mark your calendars now and join us for an evening of fun music!

Exeter-Milligan Update: NMEA Children's All-State Choir

Caitlin Murphy, a fourth grader at Exeter-Milligan Elementary School, was a part of the 350-member NMEA (Nebraska Music Educators Association) All-State Children's Choir on Thursday, November 17, 2011.  The students rehearsed at the Cornhusker Hotel all day and presented a 4:30 concert in the packed Lied Center.  John Jacobson, a well-known composer and choreographer, led the large group of students.  The Children's All-State Choir was a first for Nebraska and was organized in celebration of NMEA's 75th Anniversary. Exeter-Milligan Update: FCCLA Projects

Exeter-Milligan FCCLA Chapter members conducted a “Trick Or Treat, So That Others May Eat”, food drive to help Blue Valley Food Pantry stock their shelves for the holidays ahead.  Through the generosity of the communities of Milligan and Exeter, our FCCLA chapter was able to collect a large variety of nonperishable food items.  Thank you so much to those who contributed to this community service project.  The FCCLA members

Next upcoming event will be hosting a dessert luncheon for the One-Act Play, “The Insanity of Mary Girard” on Sunday, November 6th at 2 p.m. in the Exeter-Milligan Gym.

December will bring a “mitten and hat tree” for needy. This project will ensure those who need warm accessories for the winter months will be able to have something warm. 

STAR projects:  Students Taking Action for Recognition are underway and members who participate in this competition event are busy creating a catching project title, completing their planning process sheet, doing research and thinking about how they will present their information.  Competition for this event at the District level will be held in Davenport on Jan. 25th with Exeter-Milligan as hosts.

Elly was fourth in the York News Times Area for Home Runs, led the area in doubles with 12
Logan Zeleny - 1st Team SNC Infield, 1st Team All-Tribune, 1st Team All-State JournalStar, 1st Team All State Omaha World Herald.
Logan was first in the York News Times Area for RBI's and third in Home Runs.

Exeter Veteran's Day Program

Exeter remembered their Veterans with a program on Wednesday at the Exeter-Milligan school.  

 

After a welcome by Becca Vossler, flags presented by Exeter Cub Scout Pack 218 and the Exeter-Milligan Band performing the "Star Spangled Banner" and "The Sentry Boy," Wilbeck spoke to the large crowd.

 

  "Our biggest national debt is that which Americans owe to their Veterans," explained Tim Wilbeck at the Exeter Veteran's Day Program on Wednesday.

 

Wilbeck emphasized the debt that Americans owe for their freedom and not only the sacrifices that our veterans have made, but also those that their spouses and families have experienced.

 

"It is not in the nature of American warriors to complain. . .warriors finish the task," explained Wilbeck while encouraging the crowd to be proactive in helping veterans. He spoke of the organizations that are available to help our veterans but other ways that community members can support veterans. 

 

"Tell a veteran thank you.  There are other ways to say thank you, take pride in your community, honor and respect your neighbors, show support for veterans or hire a veteran," explained Wilbeck.

 

Noting the prevalence of homelessness among our veterans, Wilbeck encouraged us to do better, "Vet's don't ask for much, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the human and financial cost of war."

 

Wilbeck quoted George Washington in the treatment of veterans, "The willingness of young people to serve is directly proportional to how veterans will be treated."

 

Wilbeck went on to say that if we treat veterans half as well as they have served us, no amount of money can adequately repay them for what they have done, "They have given us freedom and security, we are the greatest nation on earth, we must appreciate them."

 

Under the direction of Mrs. Angie Murphy the Junior High Choir performed "My America" before the program was closed by Exeter-Milligan Senior Claire White.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Expressive Writing
