Exeter G. F. W.C. Woman's Club Celebrates Arbor Day

Exeter G.F.W.C. Woman’s Club welcomed the new babies born in the old Exeter School District.  Those who were able to attend the event are pictured front row from the left:  Nicole Zelenka holding her son Layne Zelenka, Amanda Wince holding her son Reed Wince.  Family members pictured behind from the left are Brian Zelenka, Lorene Sluka, Linda Krupicka and Mary Wince.

For 29 years the Exeter G.F.W.C. has welcomed new babies born to families in the old Exeter school district with trees, books, flowers and certificates

Attendees were welcomed by the Exeter Club President, Elaine Oldehoeft followed by a welcome from the Exeter Mayor, Alan Michl.  Michl read an Arbor Day Observation Proclamation which encouraged “all citizens to support Arbor Day and protect the trees in our community.”

Exeter-Milligan superintendent Paul Sheffield presented a welcome gift from the school district and encouraged the families to contact the district, “The school is ready, willing and able to assist you in any way.”

Jill Schmidt of Fillmore County Good Beginnings shared about the WHALE project which places vital identification information on children's car seats to help rescue workers in the case of an accident

This was the first year for this new G.F.W.C. Arbor Day committee, as the former committee retired last year.  The new members, Kathie Due, Karen Chapman and Jessica Votipka honored the past members of the committee who had initially created the event.  Former Chairman Marilyn Manning was honored with a bouquet of flowers as she recalled the memories of their first Arbor Day celebration.

New committee member Karen Chapman expressed her thanks to Manning, Bethine Leif and Suzanne Johnson, “We had a good road to follow.”

The Exeter-Milligan second grade class presented digital shows about Arbor Day and J. Sterling Morton on their ipads to all of the guests at the event.

At the end of the program the Exeter G.F.W.C. presented books, certificates, a copy of the Mayor's proclamation, seedling trees with planting instructions, flowers for the moms and "our best wishes" to the new parents.

This year the Exeter G.F.W.C. welcomed these three baby boys: James Lee Henkel, born Oct 24, 2013 to Christopher and Crystal Henkel, Reed Michael Wince, born Dec. 19, 2013 to Derek and Amanda Wince and Layne August Zelenka, born March 24, 2014 to Brian and Nicole Zelenka.
