Exeter Public Library announced that they would have a Halloween Story Hour.

 

This year, the Exeter-Milligan Elementary has been very fortunate to go 1:1 with iPads.  In Mrs. Allison Brahm’s 6th grade class, we have been using them to review for tests, help improve our writing, and practice vocabulary. Pictured are Ryan Sharp, Anna Sluka and Caitlin Murphy from the Novels class using their iPads to scan QR codes for a writing activity. 

 

31 Exeter-Milligan staff members participated in the Lee National Denim Day on Tuesday, October 9.  This was held in conjunction with the volleyball team's Pink Out game.  Staff members contributed $5 in exchange for wearing jeans to work that day.  $155 was raised and will be sent to the American Cancer Society via Lee National Denim Day.  This was the eleventh year the school has participated. They have raised $1750 in those eleven years.

 

Dave and Pat Erdkamp had to clear some wall space in their home recently for a new addition.  The delivery they had been anticipating for over a year arrived recently, Dave’s bear trophy.

 

In August of 2012, Dave and Pat headed to Minnesota where Dave had contacted a guide to make his dream of hunting a bear a reality.  They drove to the town of Grand Marais and Dave finally got to do something “I have wanted to do since the 1970’s  It was on my bucket list and I just started at the top and worked my way down.”

 

Late this summer Felix Richter made that trek from his home in Munich, Germany to his home for the year in Nebraska with the Paul Sheffield family.

At Exeter-Milligan Richter is taking American History, English, Math and science and likes it all so far. “I really like having computers at school to keep all of your notes together, that’s good.”

 

He started playing on the football team but switched to being a student manager when a past injury haunted him.  He’s really looking forward to basketball season which was his sport in Germany.

EMF break streak and win first round of playoffs

The EMF Bobcats hadn't won a post season game since 2018 and were itching to prove this team can go far.

Thursday night they showed they had a team that can win and convincingly.  After the Bobcats forced the Pendragons to go three and out on their opening drive the home team got right to work,  On the second down Breckan Schluter got loose for a first down but more importantly secured the last few yards he needed to put him at 6000 career rushing yards.

The Bobcat offense marched downfield and Bartu plowed in for a touchdown and Schluter topped it off with the two point conversion.

With 6:57 in the second quarter Schluter picked a Pendragon pass and hit the end zone.  The Pender defense left him wide open to catch a Tyler Due pass for the two point.  

Pender found the end zone with 6:01 left in the half and put eight points on the board.

Pender tried to even up the score before half and sent a hail mary pass with six seconds left on the clock but Bartu intercepted the ball in the end zone to end the first half and it was 16- 8 at the half.

Out from the half the Bobcats were fired up and quickly got on the board for six more from Bartu with Spencer Eberspacher catching a Due pass for two to make it 24-8.

It was Schluter's turn next at the beginning of the fourth quarter as he broke free and punched it in.  Draven Payne took the ball in for two making it 32 to 8 with 11:15 left in the game

Pender got a ways down the field on a pass interference call and found the end zone but the Bobcat defense held them for the two point attempt.  The score was 32-14.

Pender attempted an onsite kick but the ball didn't go far enough and the Bobcats got the ball deep in their own territory.  Schluter took it in for six and Bartu swept into the end zone untouched for two points.  40-14.

Jacob Weber snagged his second interception with two minutes left in the game and put a stop to any offensive attempt by the Pendragons.

Final was 40-14 and the Bobcats break their first round losing streak and head to the second round of playoffs to meet Shelby Rising City in Milligan Friday night at 7 p.m.

EMF Lady Bobcats take third at Silver Lake Quad

The EMF Lady Bobcats traveled to Roseland on Tuesday afternoon to compete in the Silver Lake Quad.  They opened the tournament with a tough Deshler team and unfortunately took the loss 25-20, 23-25 16-25.

Next they met another tough team, Axtell in the consolation match.  It took three sets but the Bobcats prevailed, 19-25, 25-21,and 29-27.  After meeting Diller-Odell Friday night to end their regular season the Bobcats will go to Shickley Monday night to start sub-districts against Deshler.

First graders at E-M Elementary had a visit from Mr. Larry Light, a former beekeeper and Mikey Bartu's grandpa. He shared with us a lot of information about honeybees. The first graders were given booklets with pictures and bee facts and coloring pages. The highlight of the day was when Liberty Johnson got to dress up in Mr. Light's beekeeper uniform.

 

The Exeter-Milligan football team defeated Freeman to keep their win streak going.

 

One of the key tools that the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department uses to fight arson among young people is the Junior Fire Patrol program.  Four nights during the month of October the fifth grade students at Exeter-Milligan school are invited to learn all about fire prevention and fire fighting tools at the Exeter Fire Department.  During their meeting on Tuesday, October 8^th the participants got a lesson on fire extinguishers from Nebraska State Deputy Fire Marshall Ray Nance.  They learned how the chemicals work to put out a fire, and how to properly employ them in dousing a fire. 

 

The Exeter Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a Fire Prevention Awareness event at the Exeter-Milligan school in Exeter on Wednesday, October 9.  State Fire Deputy Marshall Ray Nance brought his Fire Safety Education trailer and all of the kindergarten through sixth grade students had the opportunity to learn about fire prevention.

 

Nance travels throughout the state with the trailer doing programs on fire prevention and safety, “The key thing we want to get out to the kids is prevention.”  

 

During the morning sessions, the students got to see a presentation from Nance in the trailer and then they were treated to rides on the Exeter Fire Department equipment along with a tour of the rescue unit.  The fire department also passed out hats, refillable water bottles and snacks.

 

Nance used some of the audience members to help him demonstrate kitchen safety, putting out a pot that is on fire and also the proper use of some kitchen appliances.  The students got to watch as one volunteer made a fire emergency call to 911 with a dispatcher on the other end of the line.  It was a good lesson for the students to know the correct information they need to share with an emergency dispatcher.

 

The Remembering the Fallen from Nebraska memorial stopped in Exeter last week from September 30 – October 4^th.  History teachers in the Exeter-Milligan district took the opportunity to share this piece of American history with their students.  Generations Bank sponsored the exhibit. The mission of the project is to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  Its legacy is that these men and women will never be forgotten and that their names will be remembered and spoken.

 

 The GFWC District IV Woman's Club Convention was held at the United Church of Christ Church in Exeter NE on October 3, 2013.  

 

    District President Nancy Galaway of Fairmont called the meeting to order.  Judy Dinneen of the Exeter club gave the "Thought for the Day" telling about the District meeting being held in the Geneva High School with 231 women present, representing 53 clubs.  Exeter President Elaine Oldehoeft welcomed the group to Exeter and Alan Michl, Mayor of Exeter, also welcomed the women, and told them of the many features of our town. 

 

Exeter-Milligan took on the Friend Bulldogs in Friend on Friday night and showed them back to the doghouse.  The Timberwolves shut out the Bulldgos 58-0 during the lopsided matchup.  The undefeated Timberwolves have one more regular season game at Pawnee City next Friday night.

 

Over 200 shoppers headed in an out of the Exeter American Legion home on Saturday to peruse the many booths of handmade items and vendors that lined the inside of the building.  The Annual Exeter Avenue Holiday Sampler is organized every year by the Exeter American Legion Auxiliary.  The Auxiliary also sponsors a café and this year’s menu included Prime Rib sandwiches and homemade Kolaches.  One of the most popular stops besides the café is at the homemade pie booth by the Exeter G.F.W.C. Woman’s Club. 

 

Village Board Chooses Paint Scheme for Water Tower

The Exeter Village Board recently chose a new paint scheme and design for the Exeter water tower.  They chose the drawing on the right for the water.  Work is to start next spring on the repairing and repainting the water tower inside and outside.

 

The Exeter Village Board met on Tuesday, October 10 and discussed a variety of topics. 

After approving the minutes and invoices the board welcomed Brenda Motis, Fillmore County Director of Senior Services to give her annual update about the status of the Exeter Senior Center.

She noted that the center celebrated their 25^th anniversary this year. “It’s been a great addition to the Exeter community the last 25 years.  Doris Hall is the only living member of the original board members from 25 years ago.”

Chairman Alan Michl added, “We’ve had a lot of people from different communities comment that we are lucky to have the senior center.”

The senior center board raised funds this summer to replace the original carpet. Some of their current activities include a watercolor class along with welcoming the Nebraska State Poet who will present four programs.

A representative from Diode Technology presented a quote for replacing the nine current surveillance cameras the village has in place. 

The bid, for $6756.00 would also include a recorder that would maintain 14-17 days of footage and would provide training for the village employees.  The board approved the bid.

The Board approved the annual roads certification along with Resolution 23-04 which also certifies the village also completes it’s annual certification for programs compliance.

The next discussion was on revamping the water tower which would be done in the spring and summer of 2024.

 

The board’s decision was unanimous on choosing a new paint scheme and design for the water tower. Along with an exterior facelift the inside of the tank will be repaired and cleaned.  The tower was built in 1928 and the ladders and railings no longer meet OSHA standards.  Their replacement is included in the estimate which is currently at 215,000.

 

There was no official marshalls report.  Michl noted that he had contacted all local law enforcement and asked them to ticket any vehicles parking on the highway especially around Casey’s as there have been near accidents because the trucks are blocking clear visual lanes.

Maintenance Supervisor John Mueller reported he is finishing up the batting cage at the park and cleaned up the property the village purchased on South Maplewood after the fire department burned the residence on the property.

He also presented several bids he received to sandblast and paint the entire pool. The board accepted the bid of $29,400 which included caulking from Torrey?

Clerk Becky Erdkamp reported that sales tax for July was $20,198.62 and August Keno income was $252.38.  She presented the financial information on the South Maplewood property.  She also noted that they will have to go through a process of publication and notification before it can be sold.

“When it gets said and done we have to decide what we want for it, “ commented Michl, “we knew we were going to lose money on it when we bought it.”

The next meeting was set for November 7.
