Exeter-Milligan band/choir performs contest pieces

The Exeter-Milligan Junior Senior High band and choir students performed their contest pieces at a concert on Monday evening in Exeter.

The Junior/Senior High Choir opened with the well-known “Johnny B. Goode,” with eighth grader Braden Capek on the trap set.

The Junior High choir performed “A Distant Shore,” accompanied by Caitlin Murphy on the piano and then performed “Slow Rock and Roll.”

Next during the program several of the groups performed their contest pieces include a brass quartet playing “March and Gavotte,” followed by the saxophone choir on “Romance and Troika.”  The final group performing was the clarinet choir on “Meneuetto.”

The Friends of Vocal group performed an excellent rendition of “Si Vis Amari” to close the vocal portion of the program.

The Junior Senior High band did an excellent job on “Mamma Mia!” before performing their two contest pieces “Blue Ridge Saga,” and “Southern Star.”

The band and choir groups will travel to Henderson for District music contests on Thursday and Friday, April 19^th and 20^th.  On Thursday their individual and small group performances begin at 4:00 p.m. and the concert band performs Friday at 1:00 p.m. with audiences welcome at all performances.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Industrial Tech Class

Travis Gilliam recently completed a project in his Industrial Technology class, taught by Dean Filipi.  The emphasis was utilizing existing resources.  Travis designed and built a bench, using reclaimed lumber and the tailgate from his pick-up.  Pictured is Travis with his project.

Toddler Story Hour Postponed

Exeter-Milligan Girls Take Second at Heartland Invitational

Hannah Beethe took first at the High Jump

 Patrick Murphy (above) and Eric Olsen (below) placed in the high jump.  Murphy was fourth and Olsen was third.  The boys team placed sixth at the meet.

 Max Zeleny placed fourth in the shotput.

 Jaiden Papik took second in the 400M and second in the 800M  she was part of the second place 4 x 400 M relay with Hannah Beethe, Kate Jansky and KK White and also plart of the first place 4 x 800 team with Cammie Harrison, Kayla Geiger and Kate Jansky.

 Eric Olsen took third place in the boys 200 M

 Brock Steuben took fourth place in the 3200M race.  For the boys they also took fourth in the 4 x 400 race with Joey Bartu, Casey Jindra, Patrick Murphy, and Eric Olsen.

Kate Jansky placed fourth in the 800 and third in the 1600 race.  KK White placed first in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles and second in Long Jump. 

Crossroads Conference Announces First All Conference Academic Team

The Crossroads Conference has announced its first All-Conference Academic Team.. Seventy =three seniors were recognized as gold, silver or bronze award winners based on their highest achieved ACT score by March 1. 
Members recognized as gold achieved a score of 30 or higher.
Silver is for a score 27-29, brozne is for 24-26.
Those recognized will receive an academic medal from the conference.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Coding

Coding in Exeter-Milligan Elementary

Carter, Aidan, and Landon working to build their structure.

During the month of February, the 4-6th grade have been working with coding for an hour each week. They have been logging into Code.cog and progressing through one of the units. The first hands on activity was to write a program for stacking cups. The students had to draw arrows on a card for stacking the cups a certain way and then their human robot had to read the card and do what it said without words from anyone. The students soon found “bugs” in their program and had to fix the “bugs”.

Students were given a journal to write code in as they went through the program. They found it to be very interesting and predictable after a while on what the code would be for certain moves. The last hands-on activity was to create a structure with given material that would hold a book for 10 seconds without collapsing. They worked in groups and soon fixed the “bugs” in their structure to get it to stand and support the book. They learned how to work through their frustration and used persistence to complete the project.

This introduction was all a segway to the “Coding Club” that has been started for 4-6th graders the final quarter of this school year. The Coding Club will meet most Thursday afternoons, after school. Students will work with a variety of software applications, participate in computer activities like computer programming and coding, and familiarize themselves with computer technology and with computer fundamentals. Dash and Dot, robots, will make an appearance sometime in April for the club to work and program the robots to go different places.
