post-season recognitions from local press along with the Nebraska School
Activities Association academic honors.
Trophies from the different sports were sprinkled throughout
the tables for each of the three senior high classes with the four state
championship trophies placed on the senior table. The Exeter-Milligan

There was a towel recognizing the volleyball state champions at each place.
Volleyball Coach Darcy White shared about their incredible
season and state championship run, noting their entry into the state playoffs
via wild card. She spoke of the psychological challenges facing the team
when their first win brought them up against the undefeated Sandhills
team. White brought assistant Coach Laura Kroll up to the podium to share
some of the poetry she wrote to inspire the team before each match.

Exeter Boy Scout Troop Participates in The Big Idea project

Smith Creek near Utica.

Area near Utica on Saturday, April 16th. Payton Davis (right)
from David City and Ian Stahr from Utica were two of the scouts staining the
new boards on the picnic shelter.
How many hours of labor can a group of local scouts provide
to a NRD facility? How about 581?
That is how many hours of service the scouts and their
leaders in the Prairie Winds District donated to the NRD at Smith Creek on
Saturday, April 16th. Over 125 scouts and leaders camped out
at Coyote Hollow near Seward on Friday night before hearing Creek Stewart, a
survivalist and Eagle Scout, who hosts the TV show “Fat Guys in the Woods”
speak to them about the importance of leadership and service.
During his talk Stewart also showed the scouts how to start
a fire with a guitar pick.
After Stewart was whisked away to spend the rest of his day
with more scouts and leaders in the Cornhusker Council, the group grabbed a
quick lunch before heading to Smith Creek NRD area near Utica.
The scouts and leaders fixed fencing, cleared undergrowth
from trees and paths, repaired the restroom and painted the bridge. They
also made repairs and painted the picnic shelter. The trail around the
water was cleared of trash and overgrowth.
The Cornhusker Council recruited several event partners who
contributed $126,217 in funds to support after school scouting programs.
This is the third year that the Cornhusker Council has
undertaken “The Big Idea” but the first year that an event was held in each of
the three districts that comprise the Cornhusker Council. This year, scouts
and leaders were able to participate in serving the communities where they live
and play. In the past the scouts planted over 300 hundred trees at
Pioneers Park in Lincoln and last year the scouts spruced up Mahoney Park in
Lincoln, planting trees and replanting flower beds. Scout troops from
York, Seward, Utica, Exeter, Crete and Milford participated.

Exeter Girl Scouts Celebrate Earth Day
Above – Joyce Votipka reads the Exeter girl scout troop a story
about the three r’s of recycling. The girls from the left are Kaylie
Schlueter, Scout Grummons, Sydney Engert and Brooklyn Oldehoeft.
Exeter Girl Scouts celebrated earth day on Tuesday, April 20th
by picking up trash on their walk from school to the recycling trailer.
At the recycling trailer the troop had a presentation from
Joyce Votipka who was instrumental in writing the grant for the village to
receive the trailer.
Votipka taught the girls how to find the recycling symbol on
plastics and along with explaining which items are accepted at the trailer.
Not only did Votipka encourage the girls to recycle, she
explained the concept of reusing and reducing and read them a book to emphasize
the theory. To follow that concept the girls made bird feeders using
recycled plastic bottles to take home.
Votipka also gave each girl a daylily to plant at home.
When the ground dries out the girls will be planting flowers
in the park downtown.
Below – The girl scouts show the bird feeders they made with
recycled plastic bottles. They are pictured from the left Kaylie
Schlueter, Scout Grummons, Sydney Engert and Brooklyn Oldehoeft.
