Exeter-Milligan School Board Accepts Resignations

Exeter-Milligan School board met on Thursday, February 10 in the Milligan Band room for their regularly scheduled meeting.

After the board approved the consensus agenda they quickly reviewed several policies and made no changes.

Next on the agenda was Mental Health Practicioner Sue Gelster who works out of the Fillmore County Hospital.  The board invited her to give a report and she opened by thanking them for the opportunity to work with Exeter-Milligan.

“I appreciate it.  The need is definitely there.  I see six kids each day I am here anywhere from second graders up to seniors,” she explained.

The board recently increased mental health services from one day a week to one and a half days per week and right now Gelster noted she is “Primarily working with behavior management and coping skills.”

Superintendent Paul Sheffield explained he asked Gelster to come after the board approved an addition to the contract as he wanted them “to be able to put a face with a name.  We hope to do some mental health support work with the staff soon.”

The board moved to discussion items and President Adam Erdkamp briefly summarized the recent work sessions the board held.  He also noted that the board would like to talk to Friend about some coop opportunities.  He specifically mentioned the possibility of cooping speech, one act play, fccla, ag and FFA, track, wrestling, golf and added,” I think everything would be on the table to communicate.”

There is no date set for the boards and/or committees to meet.  Sheffield mentioned that he has an upcoming meeting set with Friend Superintendent Derek Anderson in the next week.

The board accepted the two applications for the separation incentive program from two long time teachers Marla Weber and Dean Filipi.  The board approved both of them.  Erdkamp commented “Both of them have been a big part of our staff for a long time we would want to show them our appreciation.”

Next on the agenda was the contract for a new Ag teacher, Miranda Hornung. Sheffield explained that she will be able to teach both ag and some industrial arts courses.  She is also certified to teach dual credit welding.  He noted that she will teach, “Intro to ag, ag business and entrepreneurship.  What the other classes will look like we don’t quite know.”

The board approved two year contracts for both the principal and superintendent and approved unpaid leave for a staff member.

Sheffield gave a brief legislative update and then noted the dates of upcoming conferences.  The next meeting was set for March 9 at 7 p.m. in Exeter.
