Exeter-Miligan Update: Transition Plans

Transition Plans

By Anita Mueller, Exeter-Milligan 6-12 SPED Instructor

Transition plans have been included in Individual Education Plans for several years for special education students.  Nebraska changed the transition age requirement from age 16 to 14 with the passage of LB527 in 2021.  I have been working with the special education students to take the initiative to talk with some community people through job shadows about their roles and work with them to see what their job is like.  One student went to job shadow a cosmetologist.  The cosmetologist answered her questions and gave her many things to consider that she had not previously thought about when considering this profession.  Another student got a part-time job at an implement and is considering the John Deere Tech program at a community college because he wanted to get first-hand experience of what the job might be like.  A younger student is interested in photography and will be talking to Mrs. Brandi Perez, Exeter-Milligan English teacher, and freelance photographer. This student might be reaching out to some of our other local photographers during the next quarter and then doing some research on colleges that offer photography and what it takes to get into those colleges.  Thank you to community businesses and professionals for taking the time to talk to these young people about your professions and answer their questions.
