The Exeter-Milligan Girl Scout Troop 20703 enjoyed
shopping for a family at Christmastime so much last year they wanted to do
something to make a year round impact.
They also discovered that the Christmas lists were not
going to be available this year and discussed several other service projects
ideas. They found out there was a need for birthday party supplies. So the troop brainstormed about the
essentials for a good birthday party, made their lists and decided on a budget
for their service project.
The bags included cake mix, frosting, candles, birthday
banner, plates, napkins, tablecloth, cake pan and birthday hat. They made bags for both girls
and boys.
Together the troop shopped for the supplies, sticking to
their budget, and assembled the bags at the Friend Library.
According to their leader, Kendra Oldehoeft, "The
hardest part for the girls was stopping at just the items on the list- they
really wanted to keep adding items to make the recipients happy- toys, greeting
cards, birthday hats, etc.- but they did good refraining as they kept the
budget in mind."
The troop recently co-hosted a fish fry with the Boy
Scouts and used the proceeds from that event to fund their service project.
The look forward to making handprint turkey pictures to
be included with Meals on Wheels deliveries around Thanksgiving.
The Blue Valley Pantry in Geneva have the bags available
and will pass them out as needed.
