Central Community College in Hastings
provided the setting for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
District 4 Conference. Thirty-one members of the Exeter-Milligan FCCLA Chapter
and their advisor, Mary Lou Vossler, attended the Conference on October 2,
2012. The theme of the conference was “Ignite the Spark with
FCCLA”. Students from Exeter-Milligan, Thayer Central,
Fillmore Central, Doniphan-Trumbull, York, Sutton, Cross County and Bruning-Davenport
attended the event. The opening general session featured Keynote Speaker,
Mike Smith, from Lincoln, NE. Mike’s message of “Finding Your Calvin” had
an anti-bullying message and had a profound impact on the FCCLA members.
Mike has founded and continues to direct two nationally recognized non-profit
organizations called “The Bay” and “Skate For Change.” His talk was
truly amazing! One of his main messages was “DUDE BE NICE”.
Members attended teen issue sessions
entitled: Women’s Prison Inmates, More with Mike Smith, Ignite Your Passion by
“Teal Boutique” in Hastings, Fat to Freedom by Sara Theesen and ZUMBA with
Shannon Stone of Sutton. The afternoon sessions were FCCLA Leadership sessions
entitled: PEER Education, What Not to Wear, Start the Fireworks! Chapter
Shout Out I & II, and “Ignite the Spark with Community Service
Ideas”. Haylee Sheffield served as the district officer for the
Exeter-Milligan FCCLA chapter. District officers help plan, contact
potential speakers, and set up the conference for the district.
