State Volleyball Playoff's Tonight!!!!

The Exeter-Milligan Lady Timberwolves defeated Meridian Friday afternoon to secure their spot in the District finals Saturday at 9 p.m. in Lincoln. They will play Howells at the Coliseum for the final game. The game will also be aired on channel 12 at 9 p.m.

Village Board Notes - March 3

The Exeter Village Board met Wednesday, March 3rd at 7 p.m. with member Margaret Petro absent.

After taking care of the regular business, representatives from the Keystone Pipeline, Tracey Calhoun permit specialist for Nebraska and Jeff Rauh an independent contractor to the Keystone Pipeline were given the floor. They explained that Keystone has been construction pipeline in surrounding counties. And explained that pipelines are the safest mechanism for carrying liquid energy products

They are coordinating and working on permits to build a pipeline that will be a few miles west of Exeter on Highway 6 and it will be a 36” line officially called the Keystone gulf coast expansion.

Rauh explained that they are working on the environmental impact and the government will hold public meetings to generate public comment on the environmental impact.

All landowners in the proposed pipeline path have been contacted along with the communities. There will be a pump station just west of Exeter with 3 - 5 pumps with a large electrical line to run the pumps.

Also present at the Village Board Meeting were an Exeter Township board member and a county superviosr. There were concerns from the Exeter Township board on the dirt road that the construction workers will be using. Construction will be in Nebraska in 2011-2012 with pump station construction starting prior to the pipeline construction. Most of construction will be done in the summer and crews will most likely be based out of a larger town.

Gerry Daniels Fillmore County Zoning Department was next on the agenda but she was not present. County Supervisor Bob Mueller updated the board about the county plan to update the zoning maps. Village will have to correct any zoning on the Exeter map and turn it in to the county. Alan Michl suggested that the Village find an older map and compare to current to double check. Board will have to hold a hearing if zoning is changed. Bob estimated that the county is hoping to do this in the next six months to a year.

Clerk Becky reported that she is working on reserving a dumpster for spring cleanup for April 24 and May 1.

The board voted to hire Richard Erdkamp for the summer maintenance position.

Police department purchased a preliminary breath tester with grant funds. Chairman Michl reported that they will not be purchasing a scanner, as the items need to be destroyed according to Marshal Mark McFarland. He also reported that the car is working fine.

John reported there was a dog at large issue. The dogs have not been caught nor has the owner been identified.

John Mueller gave the Village Maintenance report. There is a problem with the replacement lift station meter. He reported that the maintainer needs some work and the old loader has been returned. The board is looking into upgrading the loader.

Clerk Becky Erdkamp gave her report. Sales tax for December of 2009 was $9704.58. Chairman Michl brought up discussion about the excess in sales tax collected. The board discussed paying off the loan for the pool slide because the excess money cannot be held over to the next year.

Village board adjourned.

LIFE IN EXETER

If I haven’t already said it I really need to, I love the internet.

There are some things we can’t get in Exeter, like clothing, specialty craft and computer items that I just have to have. To me there is nothing better than shopping online.

First, I can shop 24/7, yippee!!! It’s 10 p.m. and I just realized that I will be needing a special kind of paper. Online, I go. I can find 1500 sites in 2.8 seconds (according to my search engine) that have the item that I want.

I love shopping online because it’s a one stop mecca of the entire shopping world. Shopping for things in downtown Exeter is easy because it is all within a block. I get front door parking and can walk everywhere (depending on the weather). Online, it’s the same, front door parking, I get to sit in a comfy chair while I shop (really comfy when I shop from my laptop in my recliner).

Probably the biggest reason I love to shop online is because of my helpers. Mikey wants some more milk? I just get up get him some more and go back to the computer. I don’t have to run back to the car, or realize I forgot to bring him things, it’s all here. Plus there is the bonus of not having to haul the packages back to the car when I get overloaded or deal with crabby children who have had enough shopping in craft stores (of course, not my children).

The best reason to shop online, believe it or not, it often supports Exeter. When you buy something from a major retailer online and they have a presence in Nebraska they will charge you sales tax depending on your zip code. If your zip code is Exeter, they will charge you Exeter sales tax and Exeter benefits. Many large retailers have free shipping (if you spend enough or find their coupons). You can shop from home, get what you need and benefit Exeter. Who doesn’t love that!

Another thing I love about the internet is the actual information highway that it has become. You can find a recipe, a video or a blog about anything imaginable. When I need a craft for Cub Scouts, a recipe or want to watch a tv show I missed I can just log on.

Even this website, provides so much more than a newspaper. It can be updated immediately, the number of photos available is endless and it can be corrected easily (not that I ever make mistakes).

I love using the internet for so much of what I do, it's convenient, useful and entertaining. I would enjoy it a whole lot more if I could get it to fold laundry for me. Then, it would definitely become the 8th wonder of the world.

Accepted Items at the Exeter Recycling Trailer

Corrugated cardboard: All boxes or packing boxes with a wavy core. Examples: Grocery boxes, clean pizza boxes. Please no egg cartons, cereal boxes, 12 pack holders
Magazines: all types of magazines are accepted. Preparations: Remove any plastic wrapped covers or sleeves. No phone books
Newspapers: Daily, Sunday, or weekly publications Preparations: no sorting of colored or slick pages is needed. Do not include plastic sleeves.
Aluminum cans: Pop, beer, sports drinks, some pet food containers. Pleases no pie tins or aluminum foil. Preparations: rinse (Optional- remove pull tabs and save for Exeter Woman’s Club)
Tin Cans: These are most of the canned goods on your pantry shelves. Preparations: Rinse, labels can be left on. Flatten gallon or large cans .
#2 Plastic (HDPE) This is a harder colored or white plastic is not clear. Examples: milk and water jugs, laundry detergents, shampoo, coffee, some yogurt, margarine & cottage cheese containers. Check the bottom number to be sure Preparations: rinse and discard lids, crush large containers
#1 Plastic (PETE) All plastic bottles that contain liquids consumed by humans are packaged in clear or colored # 1 PETE plastic bottles. Some other food such as catsup and salad dressing may also be this type but you must check the bottom number to be sure. Examples: pop, cranberry juice, sports drinks, liquor Preparations: rinse and discard lids
What NOT to do! Please do not use this trailer as your garbage dump! Items must be clean and properly sorted or the recycling company will not accept the items. DO NOT throw in bags, boxes, string or other “holders” along with the recycling items.
