Spring Clean Up Time

The Village of Exeter is sponsoring a large dumpster this SATURDAY, May 5th at the City Shop 

271 S. Burlington

 starting at 8 AM until 2 PM or whenever it gets full.

Accepted items are junk, bricks, small furniture, etc.

Items NOT ACCEPTED are: tires, appliances, batteries, oil, paint or shingles.

Exeter-Milligan performs "The Ballad of Gopher Gap"

Exeter-Milligan’s All-School production of “The Ballad of Gopher Gap” was certainly packed full of characters.

The audience was introduced almost immediately to Bunco De Sneer (Toni Bossaller), the swindling owner of the lease on a mine that produced everything from jewels to gold.  His conniving sidekick, Flora Fourflusher (Liz Murphy), runs the assay office in Gopher Gap where everything is certified genuine.

Throw in a Crazy Nanette (Megan Waldron) who is  constantly on the lookout for her misplaced baby who has now grown up and a genuine hick, Slats (Becca Vossler) and you have yourself a good old fashioned melodrama sans some railroad tracks.

Toby Mugg (Nate Bigelow) shows up as the last victim of the notorious Bunco and tries, despite enduring a beating, to warn the new stagecoach full of innocents of their impending ruin.

The stagecoach dumps out Judge Abernathy (Kaitlyn Hertzel), his heiress sister Ottillie (Hunter Stride) who is really just looking for a husband since she already has a fortune.  Looking for riches are poor Becky (Alicia Bigelow) who is dressed in burlap bags while the poetry spouting mountain man, Rocky Romance (Robert Harre)has his eye on the real mine owner, the fair beauty, Verlinda Springblossom (Deidre Stevens).  There to get to the real scoop on the mine is newspaper reporter Minerva Hotchkiss (Shelby Bell).

Despite Bunco’s attempts to swindle Miss Springblossom out of her mine, all’s well that ends well and well, that’s how it ends with Miss Springblossom and Rocky Romance tying the knot and saving the mine.

Under the direction of Jeretta Tauriella crew members for the production were Megan Zwickl, Malinda Hall, Meghan Miller and Ashley Miller.

Exeter-Milligan Students Learn to Save

 

– Exeter-Milligan second graders have lots of questions about saving money for First National Bank in Exeter employee Sharla Dinneen.

 

First National Bank in Exeter employee Sharla Dinneen shows the Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten and first graders how a cast iron novelty bank works.

Exeter-Milligan second graders took a minute to thank First National Bank in Exeter for teaching them to save along with giving them treats and money.  Clockwise from the left are Alivia Hartmann, Alec Schlueter, Emma Olsen, Kole Svec, Braden Capek, Briana Capek, Casey Underwood and Wesley Ronne.

Exeter-Milligan Elementary students learned all about the importance of saving on the national “Teach Children to Save” day on April 24^th.

Sharla Dinneen, an employee of First National Bank in Exeter, talked to the students about different ways to save their money and some of the worst places to keep their money (like in their jeans pockets).

Dinneen also showed the students a variety of piggy banks and explained where the term piggy bank came from, she also showed how the students can use a variety of items for a place to save their money.  She explained the concept of interest to the students and some of how the bank works to help customers grow their money.

She explained how the bank can count money for their customers but also encouraged the students to sort their money before bringing it in to the bank to avoid breaking the machine that counts the money.  She showed the students some of the items that they have found in piggy banks that can break the machine like buttons, foreign money and pocket lint.

To encourage saving, Dinneen brought gold coins from the bank for the students to put in their piggy banks along with a treat courtesy of First National Bank in Exeter. The students all signed a poster thanking the bank for teaching them about saving for the future.

Gathering of Talents participants

Several youth from St. John’s Cordova, attended the Gathering of Talents at Concordia University, Seward, on April 14. The Gathering is held annualy for youth up to 8^th grade to perform in the areas of music, art, dance, drama, and creative writing. The youth are judged by Concordia students.

In the music category participants were: 4^th grader, Sarah Casper, piano, Excellent rating; 4^th grader, Danielle Klenke, piano, Superior rating; 5^th grader Peytan Brandt, snare drum solo, Superior rating; 7^th grader, Ella Wilkins, piano, Superior rating; and Trystan Brandt, trumpet solo, Outstanding rating (purple ribbon).

In the art category particiants were: Madison Zumpfe, 2-D Art, Excellent rating; Kindergartener, Devin Harrison, 3-D Art, Superior rating; 3^rd grader, Cammie Harrison, 3-D Art, Excellent rating; 4^th grader, Danielle Klenke, 2-D Art, Superior rating; 5^th grader, Peytan Brandt, pencil drawing, Superior rating; and 7^th grader, Trystan Brandt, computer generated art, Excellent rating.

The elementary Sunday School class performed a puppet show receiving an Excellent rating, and the Jr. High Sunday School class performed a dramatic skit receiving an Excellent rating.

The event concluded with a concert and awards ceremony.
