Exeter Scouts Participate in Saltdogs Day Camp

Six Exeter Cub Scouts recently participated in the Cornhusker Council Saltdogs Cub Scout Daycamp. 

 

The boys and the parents and leaders spent the afternoon at Haymarket Park learning about baseball and participated in lots of fun activities.  Some of the planned activities were curtailed due to the heat but with plenty of water and some shade the boys were able to do some activities toward their physical achievements.

 

The boys spent part of the afternoon earning belt loops in map and compass, marbles, good manners and one of their favorites, video games.  After rotating through five different activity stations they boys were presented a program by the Saltdogs and then enjoyed an autograph session with the players. 

 

After taking a short supper break, the Exeter scouts paraded around the Saltdogs field with their pack flag before watching several ceremonial first pitches, including some by scouts in the council. Scouts also served as watchdogs for the players as they were introduced.  Joey Bartu of Troop 270 carried the American flag onto the field for the performance of the Star Spangled Banner to open the game.

 

During the game the Exeter scouts played baseball bingo, and enjoyed themed prizes. The boys all earned multiple achievements and awards and all received a day camp patch.

 

Exeter Scouts Attend Webelos Camp

Webelos II Scouts Peytan Brandt and Johnny Babula of Cub Scout Pack 218 of Exeter, went to Camp Cornhusker July 10-13. Ther activities included:  Swimming, boating, hiking, archery, BB guns, and leathercrafts. They learned more about the Boy Scout program and were taught lessons in fire building, outdoor cooking, first aid, tying knots, and they learned how to make an aluminum bowl. On the last night they performed in a campfire skit.

Amtrack Train Tangles with Pivot near Exeter

A loaded Amtrak train encountered a pivot tower across the tracks early Monday morning.  The pivot stop had malfunctioned causing the pivot to continue to move ending up on the track.  No one was injured in the accident but passengers were delayed for several hours waiting for a new engine to be brought to the site to replace the damaged engine.

Football and softball practice start Monday, August 8^th. Volleyball practice starts Monday, August 15^th. Students must have a physical before they participate in athletics. Please call the school if you have any questions. Please note the first football game is Friday, August 26^th vs Lawrence-Nelson in Milligan at 7 PM. The E-M Booster club will sponsor a Hamburger Tailgate, starting at 6 PM.

An Open House, at each site, is scheduled for Friday, August 12^th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This is a time to meet with teachers, students may finalize schedules, and everyone may tour the facility. Parent packets will be distributed at this time.

The first day of school for students will be Tuesday, August 16^th. School will dismiss at 1:30 PM during the first week, August 16^th through August 19^th.

Exeter Fun Days

With several additional events the community of Exeter definitely added more fun in their "Fun Days" event this year.

 

In addition to the street dance sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Department, residents and guests were treated to a number of new and improved events.

 

The Fun Day started with a Car and Motorcycle show which was held downtown and sponsored by the Exeter Chamber of Commerce.  Trophies were presented in four different classes.  Exeter's own 2011 National American Miss Nebraska Junior Teen Deidre Stevens presented the trophies at the event.

 

Jim Smith of Friend placed first in the motorcycle division with his 1946 Harley Davidson.  Charlie Trauger placed first in the classic car division with his 1969 Chevy Impala.  Tom Husa of Exeter placed first in the Muscle Car division with his 1969 El Camino and Tim Wilbeck of Exeter placed first in the new model car division with his 2010 Mini Cooper.

 

The annual softball tournament hosted 12 teams for the daylong slow pitch festival down at Gilbert's Park fields and the Exeter Aquatic Center hosted all kinds of kid friendly games and fun. The Village of Exeter had a free swim for everyone and the Exeter Aquatic Center sponsored games and fun for all of the kids.  Kristen Hanneman organized all of the games and also provided the goodie bags and many of the prizes.  Each child received a prize and good bag before leaving.

 

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce donated two $20.00 Chamber Bucks certificates which were won by Jonah Bitz and Vicki Androyna.  Casey's General store provided two pizza and pop gift cards along with other prizes.

 

In the late afternoon the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department held a poker run before the street dance started.  This year the 10 and under and 14 and under softball teams served the food at the street dance and the fire department made a generous donation to help pay for their recent state tournament entries.  During the street dance the 14 and under softball team was recognized for winning the state softball tournament.

 

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Car and Bike Show at the Exeter Fun Days this year. Exeter Avenue was closed and the cars lined up.

During breaktime at the pool, the kids enjoyed games at the park.

Home Ownership Funds Available in Fillmore County

HOP- HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM

BEING USED IN FILLMORE COUNTY

The funds available through the Fillmore County Development Corporation (FCDC) to provide down payment subsidies to Homebuyers for the purchase of existing homes within Fillmore County has been used by several new home owners in the month of July.


The program includes not only down payment assistance through a deferred loan with no interest, but also financial assistance in the form of a conditional grant for minor rehabilitation of homes purchased.


The purpose of the Homeownership Opportunity Program (HOP) in Fillmore County is to provide financial assistance for the purchase of existing single-family residential housing units which are safe, decent, sanitary and affordable to low and moderate income persons/families-buyers. The program provides assistance to those persons/families meeting eligibility guidelines, improves availability of housing, promotes Homeownership, increases attractiveness of underdeveloped neighborhoods and increases local employment. The Fillmore County Development Corporation (FCDC), a non-profit corporation, operates the program.


The maximum home loan subsidy will be $17,000. The subsidy to any buyer shall not exceed the lesser of (1) $17,000 or (2) 20% of the purchase price, or (3) the amount of money necessary to pay the purchase price after expending all liquid assets of the purchaser, which exceeds $5,000, after the 2% down payment requirement. All program applicants are encouraged to secure permanent financing from Fillmore County lenders.


FCDC may also provide funds to complete minor repair and/or rehabilitation work in the form of a “conditional grant”. The maximum amount of these grants will be $7,500 per home. Additional rehabilitation funds may also be secured through the USDA Rural Development programs. Rehabilitation work will be completed after the purchase of the property and must be completed within 6-months of the purchase closing date.


The program is funded by HOME Investment Partnership funds awarded to Fillmore County with the Subrecipient being FCDC by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. The Fillmore County Development Corporation implements the program.

Exeter Cub Scouts Sponsor Bingo at the Exeter Care Center

Exeter Cub Scouts enjoyed playing and calling Bingo recently at the Exeter Care Center.  Three scouts, Braden Capek, Clint Oldehoeft and Ben Bartu participated in the event. The boys enjoyed taking turns calling the Bingo numbers and passing out snacks to the residents.

New Cosmotologist at Salon C

 

 

Exeter's Salon C has a new stylist with a familiar face.

 

2007 Exeter-Milligan graduate Brittanie Schlueter has returned home to Exeter to work at Salon C.  Schlueter attended college and then graduated from cosmotology school.  She specializes in cuts and colors Tuesday through Saturday in downtown Exeter. As Schlueter has a 2 1/2 year old herself she works well with children. 

Bucket List Item completed for 85th Birthday

Frances Becwar never imagined that a conversation at coffee one morning would help to fulfill an item on her bucket list.

 

During morning coffee in downtown Exeter months ago a group at the table shared their hopes and dreams.  Of course, many wanted to travel and see the world but one wish in particular was noticed.  Frances Becwar noted that "on my bucket list I want to ride a motorcycle, go to New York City but no bungee jumping."

 

Margaret Petro, a lifetime resident of Exeter, took note of Becwar's list item and started thinking.  She involved her brother John Mueller who owns a touring motorcycle that accommodates a passenger comfortably.

 

Petro talked to Mueller about helping fulfill Becwar's dream and when they found out her 85th birthday was approaching, they decided to incorporate the two events.  Mueller stopped by Becwar's house and offered her a ride.  She "enjoyed the ride and would definitely go again.  We went about four miles out of town and then turned around and came back."

 

Becwar also celebrated her birthday visiting her son and daughter-in-law in Nevada.  It was her "first and only motorcycle ride.  I have no plans to buy a motorcycle."
