Throwback Thursday Week of May 4, 2010

Here's what happened on the villageofexeter.com for the week of May 4, 2010:

Members of Girl Scout Troop 390 and Exeter American Legion Auxiliary Post 218 met on Tuesday evening to spend some time picking up trash in Exeter. The group donned gloves and piled trash into the trailer pulled by a 4 wheeler that's use was donated by Jerry Peterson. After they finished the Legion Auxiliary treated the girls to a pop. Participating were Girl Scout leaders Anita Mueller and Becky Erdkamp, Legion Auxiliary members Linda Underwood and Annette Gloystein, girl scouts Josie Hulse, Janey Erdkamp, Hannah Beethe, Vickie Androyna, helper Casey Underwood and scout Tara Mueller.

Nebraska State Troop Bybee gave a power point presentation on safe driving at the Exeter Senior Center.

As part of a nationwide program to teach children to save, First National Bank in Exeter employee's Sharla Dinneen and Tammy Sladek visited all of the Exeter-Milligan elementary students.

Each child was given a $1 coin to encourage them not only to save money, but also to introduce the concept of the $1 coin and the impact that the U.S. Mint hopes it has on the nation.

Curt Tomasevic, a Shelby, Neb. native spoke to the Exeter-Milligan student body about winning an Olympic gold medal in bobsledding, a World Cup gold medal and a World Title.

Concordia University Senior Carly Stokebrand, an Exeter-Milligan alum, recently broke the Concordia school record in the hammer at Conference competition in Hastings April 30, 2010.  Overall Carly placed second in the conference in hammer throw and first in discus.

Alumni Banquet Cancelled

To all the Exeter & Exeter-Milligan Alumni,

The class of 2010 would like to notify you all that after much consideration and discussion, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Alumni Banquet due to the Covid-19 crisis. We feel it is in everyone’s best interest to do our part in limiting the spread of the virus and to protect those most at risk. We did make an effort to look at rescheduling the banquet for later in the year, but that is proving to be extremely difficult with so many uncertainties right now.

I do want to send my deepest condolences to the honorary classes as it is disheartening that we don’t get to celebrate and honor you. When the dust settles and restrictions are lifted, please feel free to get together with those classmates that are able to celebrate a wonderful accomplishment.

We hope you're all staying home and healthy. Please keep the date of May 29th, 2021 on your calendar for next year’s Alumni Banquet.

Lastly, letters have been sent to class representatives of honorary years, but please help share this post to help get the word out.

Throwback Thursday: Week of April 27, 2010

Here's what happened on the Village of Exeter.com the week of April 27, 2010:

The playground equipment at Storybook Park was damaged. The rocking eagle was broken off the metal base.

Poppy posters were drawn and submitted to the Exeter American Legion Auxiliary.  Winners were Kindergarten:

The Exeter G.F.W.C. Arbor Day Celebration was held on Friday, April 30th. Each new baby in the last year from the original Exeter school district was honored at the event. Honored were Tawnya Ostrand holding son Brayden, Becky Erdkamp holding son Deacon, Beth Crawford holding granddaughter Addison Ann Foutch (daughter of Clinton and Ashley Foutch), Sharlene Harre holding son Cohen, Liz Kallhoff holding son Wil and Rachel Vossler holding son Joel.

Hindsight is always 2020! The shift to online learning that has been coming for years now just hit overdrive. Had we known that a global pandemic would gut the rest of our school year, we all might have done things differently. We might have put more lessons online. We might have scanned more worksheets to pdfs. We might have been nicer to classmates and teachers. We might have had more patience with our students and coworkers. Well, thanks to technology and our district's commitment to it, we are able to continue doing our best as educators and students.

      Computers are great, cell phones are great, online simulations are great, but sometimes there is no replacement for having tools or toys in your hands. EM students had at least a backpack full of materials when they left the school weeks ago, but some of those students got to take some science toys home as well. Chemistry students were sent home with molecular models that we have been using to build organic chemicals. Just think of tinker toys, but for chemistry! Earth Science students took home Virtual Reality headsets and MERGE cubes which allow them to hold the solar system in the palm of their hands, ride a roller coaster, or explore a haunted house.

       My favorite "toy" sent home would have to be with my lone physics student, Caitlin Murphy. She was the recipient of a hydraulic robot arm, unfortunately for her, it was in pieces! Along with her reading and discussion about the mysteries of the universe, she was tasked with building this robot arm and using it to accomplish some set of tasks. I am a bit saddened that I wasn't able to finish helping her build it. (Maybe jealous is the word...) 

        It is safe to say that the Exeter Milligan community stepped up over this last month. Teachers stepped up by completely revamping classes almost overnight. Students stepped up by being responsible and flexible with the changing times. The community has stepped up by coming together to help those who need it. There are too many people for me to thank by name who have helped me personally during these trying times, but very quickly: to my wife who keeps me sane, to my students that keep me smiling, to my coworkers that make the empty school seem full, and to the rest of my family and friends that are always available for a quick FaceTime or phone call.

       If we are going to take anything from the last month and whatever may come, it should be that we need each other. We shouldn't take anything for granted. The cheerful librarian, friendly faces at the grocery counter, nurses, doctors, gas station attendants, first responders, your neighbors, family near and far, and yes, even the teacher that gives you an assignment, on a Friday.
