Exeter-Milligan
By Mary Lou Vossler, E-M FCS
Instructor and FCCLA Advisor
The EMHS FCCLA Chapter hosted
District #4 STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Competitive Events
Competition on Feb. 4th. FCCLA STAR participants were from
Exeter-Milligan, Sutton, Cross County, Fillmore Central, Doniphan-Trumbull, and
Bruning-Davenport. FCCLA STAR Events are competitive events in which
members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and
individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR
Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through
the following activities: cooperation-teams work to accomplish specific
goals, individualized-an individual member works alone to accomplish goals and
competitive-individual or team performance is measured by an established set of
criteria. STAR Events promotes the FCCLA Mission to focus on the multiple
roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader. Each event is
designed to help members develop specific lifetime skills in character
development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication,
practical knowledge, and career preparation. Exeter-Milligan was
represented by Caitlin Murphy. Caitlin's FCCLA STAR Leadership project,
titled "Learning to Lead". Leadership is an individual event,
recognizes participants who actively evaluate and grow in their leadership
potential. Caitlin investigated her leadership ability, assessed her
leadership and employability skills. She developed and implemented a plan
to further her leadership development by setting SMART goals and conducting
activities at the monthly FCCLA Chapter meeting. She showcased all of
this in her portfolio and oral presentation. Caitlin was awarded a Gold Medal
and will represent Exeter-Milligan and District #4 at State Leadership
Conference in Lincoln on April 7-9.
