Exeter-Milligan Student Competes
in STAR Event Competition at FCCLA National Leadership Conference in San
Antonio, TX. July 6th-10th
More than 7,000 Family, Career
and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisers, alumni, and guests
from across the country gathered in San Antonio for the 2014 National
Leadership Conference. The conference is based on the student-originated
theme “SOAR.” Haylee Sheffield, a sophomore at Exeter-Milligan School,
Exeter, NE., was among the members and took part in STAR Event Competitions at
the conference.
FCCLA offers 33 STAR (Students
Taking Action with Recognition) Events. These events, which include Early
Childhood Education, Job Interview, and Sports Nutrition, among others,
represent college and career readiness skills taught in Family and Consumer
Sciences classroom. Members compete at the District, State and National level.
This year, Haylee was among over 4200 STAR Event participants who competed this
week in San Antonio. This is the largest number of competitors at any National
STAR Events competition. Haylee competed in the event of Recycle &
Redesign. Her project focused on creating a brand new product, not simply
embellishing an old one. She took a donated old entertainment center and
created a play kitchen for a young child. Through the use of using
recycled wood and adding a fabric curtain, bright paint, chalkboard paint,
faucets, handles and a posterboard scene for a window, Haylee made a beautiful play
kitchen. Her project also included a tri-fold board presentation that displayed
a itemized cost sheet, time log, photo story board, material profile, planning process sheet and
her evidence of submission to National FCCLA.
Haylee received a silver medal in
the event.
