Exeter-Milligan Update: PE

Students in Mrs. Darcy White's Physical Education classes at Exeter-Milligan are busy enjoying the SPARK curriculum we implemented almost three years ago through the PEP Grant.  In this activity called "Toaster Catch", students practice tossing and catching with a partner, but first, they have to get up off of their tummies and then locate and catch the ball tossed by their partner.

FCDC Director attends Summit

Patt Lentfer, Fillmore County Development Corporation (FCDC) director, attended the Entrepreneurship Best Practices Summit at Nebraska Innovation Campus on November 17^th.

Dell Gines, Senior Community Development Advisor for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, was the opening keynote speaker.  He discussed entrepreneurship based economic development and ecosystems or “Grow Your Own” models of economic development and why they are important to Nebraska communities. As demographic shifts occur and corporations can no longer be expected to drive local employment and economic growth in many communities the need for entrepreneurs to create new opportunities becomes vital.  By developing entrepreneurship ecosystems that support both the creation and growth of entrepreneurs and the businesses they create, communities can position themselves for long run and diverse economic growth in the modern economy. 

There were breakout sessions on growing, creating, and building entrepreneurial communities through community action, having a vision, and being strategic and focused to encourage entrepreneurs.  There was also an opportunity to hear from entrepreneurs who have started new businesses in the last few years and hear about journeys.

Exeter Ballfield Makeover

 The dreary weather was perfect for spreading out the top coat in the infield at the Exeter ballfield.  The special dried clay is the same product that is used on professional ballfields to help the infield drain quickly after rain.  The Exeter ballfield got the royal treatment this fall with sprinklers and the infield redo.  The rain on Tuesday was perfect to help settle the clay.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Concordia Musical Arts Day Participants

Four Exeter-Milligan students participated in the Concordia Musical Arts Day Honor Band on Friday, October 28.  They rehearsed all day and performed in an evening concert under the direction of Assistant Professor Andrew Schultz.  The students who participated are pictured above (L-R) Caitlin Murphy, Trystan Brandt, Samantha Horne & Peytan Brandt.

Leadership Class Attends Government Session

LEADERSHIP CLASS ATTENDS GOVERNMENT SESSION

FILLMORE COUNTY - The Odegeo…Leadership for Fillmore County class attended the “Government-Power of the People” November 15, 2016.

The day began with UNL Extension educator Brand VanDeWalle highlighting some power and influence tactics used in leadership.

Next local leaders from different levels of government spoke to the group and included:  Jeff Neiman, Fillmore County Supervisor, Rod Norrie, Geneva Mayor and Senator Laura Ebke from the 32^nd District.  Kyle Svec, Geneva City Administrator, Becky Erdkamp, Exeter Village Clerk and Linda Carroll, Fairmont Village Clerk talked about their duties to help city and village offices handle the day-to-day business of their communities.  During the morning break sponsored by Cumberland’s Style Shoppe, participants had a chance to visit with Senator Ebke. 

The class toured the Fillmore County East building and saw the lay-out of the many offices there. Amy Nelson, who gave the tour of the facility, spoke for the zoning administrator about  how zoning works in Fillmore County.

Following that the group learned about public power as they listened to Craig Vincent, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), Account Manager. The class continued discussion as they ate lunch that was sponsored by NPPD.

In the afternoon the group traveled to the Fillmore County Courthouse where President Fillmore greeted the group. Patt Lentfer, FCDC Executive Director, briefly outlined economic development at the local, regional and state level.  Monica Braun from REAP (Rural Enterprise Assistance Project) shared information how she and her organization works with small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Jim Dunker, Emergency Management Manager, and Fillmore County officials Amy Nelson, Clerk, Lynn Mussman, Assessor, and Barbara Trapp, Treasurer told about their offices and the duties for which they are responsible. County officials sponsored the afternoon snack.

Amy Nelson then took the group on a tour of the Historical Fillmore County Courthouse. Many of the members of the group climbed up to the third floor to enjoy the view.

A school board panel consisting of Local school board members Kendra Jansky from Exeter-Milligan, Sherri Nun from Fillmore Central and Dan Miller from Shickley were on a panel to provide information about how schools are run and the role of the board members in working with the administrators and the community. 

The December session of the ODEGEO class will focus on Education.

Exeter Cemetery Clean-Up

Volunteers are needed to help with clean-up at the Exeter Cemetery on Saturday November 26th at 9 a.m.  They will be cleaning unwanted trees out of the windbreak.  Bring your chainsaw, gloves, earplugs and safety glasses.  Any and all help is appreciated.  Lunch will be provided.  Need additional information?  Call (402) 366-4646.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Doane University Fall Festival of Winds Participants

The Exeter-Milligan students who participated in the Doane University Fall Festival of Winds are pictured above with Dr. Jay Gilbert, director of bands at Doane University.  They are (L-R): Haylee Sheffield - Tiger Band; Samantha Horne, Hannah Horne; Trystan Brandt - Honor Band; Joel Klemm; Theron Odvody - Merrill Band.  The students rehearsed throughout the day on Saturday, November 5, and presented a late afternoon concert.
