Third Graders Meet "Biscuit" at Plum Creek Literacy Festival

The Exeter-Milligan 3rd grade recently went to the Plum Creek Literacy
Festival at Concordia University in Seward. At the festival
they had the opportunity to see and hear from author Dan
Gutman and illustrator Pat Schories. Pat Schories is the
illustrator of the book series "Biscuit". The 3rd grade
was fortunate to have their picture taken with the lovable
dog Biscuit.

Fillmore Central Exeter Milligan Softball results

The #2 seeded Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan lost their 10 a.m.game to Friend 3 - 0 (their only two losses during the regular season were to Friend) and went on to play Ashland Greenwood who defeated #1 seed Wayne yesterday.


The Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan team competed again today at 3 p.m. meeting Ashland Greenwood in a close 6-5 loss for the ladies.  Congratulations on playing in the state tournament again!

Exeter Pool Receives Grants for Aquatic Wheelchair and Toddler Slide

Rhonda Stokebrand has campaigned for the last years for the new Exeter Aquatic Center to have some extra equipment.

 

The original plan for the aquatic center included both a large slide and a toddler slide, but due to increased construction costs those items were put on hold.

 

Last year the large slide was added and Stokebrand has continued her campaign for both an aquatic wheelchair and a toddler slide.  She has attended village board meetings, researched toddler slides and wheelchairs presenting options to the village board. Stokebrand served on the pool committee and was the pool manager and swimming lesson instructor for a number of years.

 

Recently Stokebrand applied for several grants for the two items.  The Mary Tous Foundation donated $1500 to the toddler slide and wheelchair fund and the Fillmore County Foundation donated $400 to the pool committee. Ninety-five dollars in donations for the aquatic wheelchair came from the Fillmore County Hospital Denim Days fund.  Shari Michl, of Exeter is a nurse at the hospital, and applied for the use of some of those funds toward the wheelchair.

 

Together both projects will require around $8000.00.  Stokebrand hopes to continue to apply for grants along with private donations so that the items can be ordered in time to be placed at the aquatic center for the 2011 pool season.

Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan Playing in Softball Quarter Finals

Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan will meet Friend in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m.


Yesterday, the combined team defeated Twin Rivers 7 -6 with a rally in the seventh inning.  Go T-Wolves!

Exeter-Milligan Varsity Softball players headed to Hastings on Friday morning to play in the State Tournament.  From the left are Elly Korbelik, Alicia Bigelow, Merre Emshoff, Logan Zeleny and Mariah Bigelow.  The ladies, along with their teammates from Fillmore Central, will meet No. 9 Twin Rivers at 12:30 p.m. today. Grain Piles Growing

The corn pile at the Coop north of town continues to grow daily in the beautiful harvest weather we have had this fall.  Bob Betka watches while Jim Krejci unloads the corn off his truck and sends it to the top of the pile.

Fire Truck Rides at Exeter-Milligan

The Exeter-Milligan Kindergarteners enjoyed riding on top of the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department truck on Monday to help them learn more about Fire Safety Month.

The Exeter Preschool students enjoyed a ride around downtown Exeter on Monday in honor of Fire Safety Month.  They also received play fire hats and goodies from the department.

Exeter's Gator's Pub Changes Owners and Names

There are new owners of a familiar establishment in Exeter.

John Graham and Rhonda Walford recently purchased Gator’s Pub, in downtown Exeter, from long-time owner Faye Neeman. Faye and her late husband, “Gator,” had owned the bar since 1981.

They plan to keep many of the “Gator’s” traditions including karaoke on Thanksgiving eve. In fact they hope to expand on the tradition and add monthly karaoke after the first of the year. Of course the NASCAR parties that Gator’s was famous for will be continued in February.

One thing that will be changing will be the menu. Graham, the former chef at the York Country Club, as well as the club’s kitchen manager, has lots of culinary plans. “We plan to add steaks to the evening menu along with spaghetti and fettuccine.”

John E’s will add a lunch buffet starting in November and “the menu will expand as I can get in here and
get situated in the kitchen,” said Graham.

Currently John E’s is serving burgers, wings and chicken strips accompanied by fries and onion chips. However, they always have specials and events going on that the post on their Facebook page.

This summer Graham and Walford are looking forward to hosting a bike and car show and shine. The envision opening a beer garden to the north of their building.

Purchasing the bar embodies what the couple has enjoyed about small town living as they have lived in Cordova for the last year, “meeting lots of new people and making friends.”

John E’s plans to celebrate their new business by hosting a grand opening on October 15^th featuring a live performance with Shawn Cole. Cole will also be performing at the New Year’s Eve party at John E’s.

Current hours for John E’s are Monday through Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Second Graders Learn about Famous Artists

Mrs. Weber's second graders learn about famous artists in art class
each week. This week, students learned about an American folk artist,
Edward Hicks. Students had to include a theme of peace and harmony in
their pictures, as Hicks did in his artwork.
