Obituary: James Sluka

James Robert Sluka was born to Gust J. Sluka and Mayme (Hromadka) Sluka on July 5, 1934 on the family farm south of Exeter. He passed away on February 3, 2010 at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, NE at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 29 days. He was the youngest of three children.

Jim attended grade school at District 2. Here he made lifelong friends Jim & Dwayne Luzum. As a youngster, he was involved in 4H. He graduated from Exeter High School in 1952. Here he had participated in football, basketball and track. In 1957 he joined the Army with his friend, Bob Zeleny. He was honorably discharged in October 1958 and returned home to work on the family farm. He also assisted his father and brother Don in auctioneering.

In 1959 Jim was introduced by Bob Zeleny to his future wife, Annabelle Nemecek from Lincoln. They were married on September 24, 1960. They began their life together on the farm where they resided until his death. To this union, six children were born, Chris, Tom, Maryann, Diane, Sandy and Amy. Jim spent his entire life farming. He served on the school boards of District 2 and the Milligan School District. In April 1990, he began working at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska as a groundskeeper. Here he enjoyed working with his good friend, Earl McCullough and the students on campus. His dedication to the job was proven by the many early morning trips taken to remove snow. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Due to illness, he retired in 2003.

Jim loved music. He started at the early age of four, playing the accordion by ear. Later he played the saxophone in a band. Jim spent many hours entertaining his kids and grandchildren playing the accordion. He also enjoyed collecting many musical instruments.

Jim also enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in all their school activities. He will be remembered by his family for his patience and will be missed as the loving husband, father and grandfather he was.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister, Doris. He is survived by his loving wife, Annabelle, sons and daughter-in-laws, Chris and Renee Sluka, Tom and Karen Sluka, daughters and son-in-laws Maryann and Rob Henrichs, Diane and Jay Geiger, Sandy and Mike Folda and Amy and Craig Fey, 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, brother and sister-in-law Don and Lorene Sluka and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass was held at St. Wenceslaus Church in Milligan on February 8, 2010 with Father David Bourek officiating. Organist Karen Filipi accompanied the congregation in Amazing Graze, Peace Prayer of St Francis and Blest are They. Randy Korbelik played his favorite polka, Little Goose Polka. Server was Sam Zeleny. Pallbearers were his 18 grandchildren – Ryan Sluka, Ashley, Alicia, Josh, James and Anna Sluka, Nick Henrichs, Corey, Kacee, Kayla and Jonah Geiger, Rachel, Rebecca and Reagan Folda, Ashley, Jessica, Gracie and Colton Fey. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Rischling, Robert Rischling, Les Svec, Dwayne Luzum and Earl McCullough. Interment was in the Bohemian National Cemetery at Milligan with Farmer and Son Funeral Home-Kotas Chapel in charge of arrangements. Memorials are directed to Milligan Rescue Unit and Fillmore County Hospital Nursing Staff.

knowledge for dividing.

The Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten class has been busy learning about the five senses in science class. After studying each of the senses, the students looked through magazines and made a "Senses Collage".

The Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten class learned about Groundhog Day on Tuesday, February 2nd and made a groundhog picture with the groundhog and his shadow.

The Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten class celebrated the 100th day of school with special snacks, then they made an 100 piece cereal necklace and at the end of the school day were joined by the First and Second grade classes and jumped on filled balloons in the hallway.

Chuck Norris wins Mock Presidential Election at Exeter-Milligan

Mr. Lewandowski's American Government class at
Exeter-Milligan recently finished a Unit on the Executive
Branch and Elections by holding Mock Presidential Elections.
Throughout this unit students studied the roles of the
Executive Branch, Political Parties, and the Electoral
Process. During typical election years, students would
choose actually candidates but due to the off year, students
developed their own candidates. Students designed a
campaign motto, poster indicating their platform, and a
campaign commercial in attempt to gain support from the
student body. Students utilized the school's new MacBook
Pro laptops and software programs Pages and iMovie to
complete the project.

The project went through both the Primary and General
Elections with the selection of a running mate. In the end,
Chuck Norris and Bo Pelini group from the Republican party
were victorious in the battle for President and
Vice-President winning both the popular vote and electoral
college vote. Members of the winning group were: Jameson
Trauger, Landon Rhodes, Spencer Bures, Andrew Colson, Tanner
Odvody, and Tyler Rainey. Michael Jordan and Will
Ferrell(Independent) group finished second, and the Zach
Galifianakis and John C. Reilly(Democrat) group finished
third.

Exeter Cub Scouts enjoy Scout night with the Stars

Exeter Cub Scout Pack 218 enjoyed a visit to the Lincoln Stars Hockey game with their families. The pack met at the Stars Ice Box and watched the two teams warm up and then saluted for the flag ceremony.

The Stars played a great game, with one puck flying over the glass. Webelos Scout Travis Gilliam got the puck and the score was tied at the end of the regulation time. It remained tied after one session of overtime so it was off to a shoot out. Unfortunately, the Cedar Rapids Roughriders scored two goals during the shoot out and the Stars couldn't get it in the goal.

After the game was over, all of the scouts in uniform were invited on the ice to get autographs and pictures with the Stars players. The players were very accommodating and friendly with the Scouts.

Where's the Beef? Local Meat Cutters Learn New Cuts

On January 4^th, local meat cutters gathered at Straight From the Farm, business/home of Sheldon and Judy Kohout, to learn a number of new beef cuts. Dr. Dennis Burson came from the University of Nebraska to educate the group. He explained that turning more of the meat from the chuck roll into these new steaks and roasts will increase the value of the beef as a whole because less of it is then made into hamburger. Dr. Burson demonstrated how to achieve each new cut on a beef donated to the assembly by Harre Feed Yards. Tara Hoelscher of the Nebraska Beef Council was also present and assisted in the presentation. She distributed books that contained information on how butchers can attain the new cuts, and how consumers can optimize tenderness in cooking them. In attendance for the demonstration were Sheldon and Judy Kohout, Straight From the Farm, Friend; Kate Harre and Mary Schlegelmilch, Harre Feed Yards, Exeter; Mahlon Kohl, Blue River Meats, Crete; Al Kimminau, The Cordova Locker, Cordova; and Brian Himmelberg, Orv’s Grocery Store, Friend.

In 2000, the flatiron steak and petite tenderloins were discovered by meat scientists at the University of Nebraska. And most recently, the Denver, the Delmonico, America’s beef roast, country-style boneless beef chuck ribs, and the Sierra have been named on the list of new beef cuts. A few of the butchers were familiar with some of the new cuts, and others learned a whole new process to use in their shops the future. It is said that these new cuts of beef are found exclusively in smaller butcher shops. Large packers would have to redesign their processing lines to accommodate these products, which they have yet to do. Area meat cutters have been learning how to accomplish these fresh cuts and are benefitting from their sales.

Obituary: Josephine Biba

Obituary

Josephine Biba, longtime resident of Exeter, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, January 16 at the Exeter Care Center. She was 102 years old. She will be fondly remembered for her quick wit and humor, and her love of card-playing. She was undoubtedly the most experienced bridge player in all of Exeter.

Josephine Kyne was born in Fairfield, Nebraska, on February 27, 1907 and attended the Fairfield public schools. Upon graduation from high school, she attended the Hastings Business College. She then returned home to work in the Fairfield banks and, in 1930, the Wallace National Bank in Exeter. She met Otto Biba there and they were married in 1936. She lived in Exeter for the remainder of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Rena (Palmer) Kyne, her husband Otto V. Biba, and her siblings Arthur E. Kyne, Gladys K. (Kyne) Traudt, and Jack Kyne.

She is survived by her great nephew and foster son, Jack L. Noragon and his wife Patricia (Handwerk) Noragon, of Worthington, Ohio, and their children, Michele (Noragon) Holman (David) of California and Melinda (Noragon) Duvall of Ohio, and grandchild Berkley Ann Holman. Other surviving family members include her sister-in-law, Helen (Schleipt) Kyne of Arizona; her nephews Ronald H. Traudt (Loretta) of Ohio and Steve Kyne (Cindy) of California; and her nieces Karen (Kyne) Bartell (Jack) of Arizona and Janice (Kyne) Wetzel (Ralph) of California. She is also survived by numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter on Saturday, January 23 at 11 a.m. with Pastors Tim & Ginny Adams officiating. Shirley Milton accompanied Jayne Petersen who sang “The Lord’s Prayer and “How Great Thou Art.” Casket bearers were Tom Manning, Dick Manning, J.J. Dinneen, Ron Ruhl, Bob Dumpert and Gail Heffelfinger. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Congregational Church in Exeter.

The family wishes to thank the exceptional staff at the Exeter Care Center who daily demonstrated the power and beauty of loving kindness.
