Exeter-Milligan Splits at Home

 The Exeter-Milligan girls lost to BDS 49-25 but the game seemed a whole lot closer than that score.  The boys game was also a battlefield with EM coming out on top 52-50 despite BDS trying to pull out every play in their bag.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Elementary students participate in All-State Children's Choir

Two Exeter-Milligan fourth graders had the opportunity to participate in the All-State Children's Choir in Lincoln on November 21. Scout Grummons and Deacon Erdkamp rehearsed all day on the UNL campus and presented a 4 pm concert in the Lied Center.  They were directed by Andy Beck, a composer of choral music.  The event was sponsored by the Nebraska Music Educators Association.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Science Update

Science can be messy… But that is the best part!

In eighth grade earth science this week, students were exploring the composition of local soil. Each of them brought a sample of soil from their homes. They were then tasked to analyze all of the items and substances in their samples. They used hand lenses, sifters, and their senses to separate the soil. Our goal was to build a definition for soil. 

After compiling a list of everything found in the samples, we classified them into categories: Rock pieces, organic matter, and trash. We then discussed the different amounts of water in the samples and if there was not much water, what replaced it? Air! 

Through this investigation we were able to produce the following definition: Soil is a mixture of rock fragments, organic material, water, and air. The students then went to their textbooks to see what it had to say. The definitions matched almost word for word. 

We then went on to discuss the presence of the “trash” we found, as well as, the bugs, feces, and other neat stuff.

Exeter-Milligan Girls Lose to Freeman at MUDECAS

 Friday's games were postponed to Saturday but the Timberwolves both lost.  The boys lost by two points to HTRS and the girls lost to Freeman.  They will meet Meridian in Daykin on Tuesday.

Exeter Village Board Discusses Cleaning Up Properties

The Exeter Village Board met on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p.m. with all members present.

After approving the minutes and the invoices the board discussed the League of Nebraska Municipalities midwinter conference before addressing the marshals report.

The board discussed the quality of surveillance cameras available and asked Clerk Erdkamp to contact the company the school uses to get information on their system.

Board member Justin Harre broached the subject of the board dealing with some of the abandoned property in town, “This year are we going to try to focus on sinking our teeth into a house and get one done?”

Chairman Michl was sure that one of the police officers would be able to serve in the legal capacity to inspect the properties.

After board member Kathy Erdkamp asked if the board was looking at their top three houses on the list, Michl remarked that the office could approach all three property owners to see if one or more would agree to have their property cleaned up.

Maintenance Supervisor John Mueller reported that the water tower was inspected, “It looks fine, it has some wear but it is fine.

He also, along with Michl, noted that the original well water sample was retested and the arsenic levels were lower than the first test.

Mueller reported that he and village employee Terry Salyer have been working on the fire hall.  They have raised the ceiling, installed ceiling fans and worked in the bathrooms.  They plan to replace the rotting wood around the overhead doors next.

Clerk Erdkamp reported that sales tax for October was $11,779.37 and keno for November was $290.44.  She has several office furniture representatives who are planning to share some ideas for replacing her desk.

The board set the next meeting for February 11^th at 7 p.m. at the Exeter Village office.

Timberwolves win first round at MUDECAS lose second round

 Exeter-Milligan was seeded #1 in the B division of the tournament.  They opened the tournament by beating Meridian 58-32 and then drew Southern in the second round.  Southern defeated them 55-48.  Their next game will be Saturday at 2:45 at the Beatrice Auditorium.

State Report Project

Exeter-Milligan’s 3rd-6th graders have been working on a state book report project in library class. Each student chose a state to investigate and completed a portfolio about that state. The portfolios included numerous facts and a paragraph about their state. After our school wide “Better Together” celebration, each student had the opportunity to share his or her report with some of Mr. Brian Murphy’s high school History students.  This was also an opportunity for the students to work on their presentation skills.
