Exeter GFWC Woman's Club Attends District IV Woman's Club Workshop

The GFWC District IV Woman's Club Workshop was held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilber on July 19, 2013.  There were 30 present from seven clubs.  Mary Keller of Wilber welcomed the group to Wilber and Karen Chapman, District IV International Outreach Chairman, of the Exeter club, gave the response.  

    Nancy Galaway, District IV President, of Fairmont, presided at the meeting.  NFWC District Chairmen gave reports of new projects in each particular division, and ideas for each individual club to carry out in the coming two-year administration.  Information was handed out to the members for each clubs' favorite program and project.

      Pat Gage, NFWC State President, of Aurora, spoke about the GFWC International Convention held in Hollywood, Florida, in June.  She also reported that Elaine Oldehoeft of the Exeter club had won an award for the picture she entered in the "Year in Pictures" contest, which will be included in the 2014 GFWC Woman's Club calendar.  

    Jan Jones, NFWC President-Elect, of Omaha, announced the upcoming events, and about clubs' reporting. 

    Revised corrections and additions to the Standing Rules of District IV were read, voted upon and were passed.

    A tasty luncheon was served by the Wilber club.  

    The program followed, with Karen Statham of Second Chance Pups, and her dog "Sheroz".  Nebraska State Penitentiary inmates volunteer to obedience train dogs from different shelters in Nebr.  They are initially instructed by a certified AKC/CGC evaluator, who instructs the inmates on dog training skills.  It takes 9 weeks to train these dogs and they are then available for adoption to area families for pets.  It is a true form of rehabilitation for inmates. The Woman's Club members thoroughly enjoyed "Sheroz" as she mingled amongst them.  The members gave "Sheroz" treats after she obeyed a command, and one member even received a kiss.  Members brought treats and toys for the program and gave a monetary donation.

    The Fairmont club extended an invitation for next years' workshop.

Exeter Boy Scout Travels to the 2013 National Jamboree

2013 National Jamboree Contingent from Cornhusker Council

Forty Boy Scouts and leaders from the Cornhusker Council left Sunday morning for the 2013 Boy Scout National Jamboree which will be held for the first time at the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia.  

One scout, Joey Bartu, from Friend Troop 270 is a member of the contingent. The scouts will spend 10 days at the Summit experiencing everything from the longest zip line in the world to hiking, white water rafting and fly fishing.  Also at the new summit location are a skateboard park, a biking course and a canopy tour.

The Boy Scouts will camp in 2-person tents for their time at the Summit and have the opportunity to meet scouts from all over the world.  It is estimated that over 50,000 Scouts, leaders and staff will be present on the Summit grounds during the ten day adventure.  One of their days at the Summit will be spent as a day of service, working together to improve the grounds at the permanent home of the Jamboree.

Patch trading is also one of the highlights for many scouts who will attend the Jamboree and the Cornhusker Council scouts were well prepared with a variety of cornhusker themed patches.

After attending the Jamboree the scouts will travel to Washington D.C. where they will tour the capitol area for four days before returning to Nebraska.  Their plans include a tour of the Capitol courtesy of Congressman Fortenberry’s Office, a private tour of the National Archives, a night tour of the Monuments along with several other tours of historical locations.

Perennial PPD Sponsors Area Teens at Youth Energy Camp

(July 24, 2013) York, NE. – Perennial Public Power District recently sponsored three area teens at the Nebraska Rural Electric Association (NREA) Youth Energy Camp. The camp was held July 15-19 at the Nebraska 4-H Camp near Halsey, NE.

The teens sponsored by the utility were Jonathan Mounce, son of Vincent and Sherry Mounce; Spencer Papik, son of Doug and Melanie Papik; and Elliot Erdkamp, son of Paul and Becky Erdkamp. All three teens are from the Exeter area. Journeyman Line Technician, Steve Gerken, and Lisa Wurtele, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, attended as adult counselors. Virginia Lacore, 2012 Youth Energy Camper, returned as a junior counselor.

Camp activities included tours of Gerald Gentleman Station near Sutherland and Kingsley Hydroelectric Power Plant at Lake McConaughy, educational workshops and presentations by regional experts, canoeing, pole climbing, a banquet and dance.

The Nebraska Rural Electric Association is composed of 34 rural electric systems including Perennial Public Power District. Each electric system offers the opportunity for high school-aged students to attend Youth Energy Camp annually in an effort to educate Nebraska youth about the public power industry.
