Exeter-Milligan School Update: Kindergarten, First and Second Graders

The Kindergarten, 1^st and 2^nd graders from Exeter-Milligan Elementary in Exeter participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event sponsored by the American Heart Association on Friday, March 26.

Jump Rope for Heart is important for many reasons. Participation in JRFH and Hoops for Heart is vital to the AHA’s efforts to raise dollars that fund lifesaving research. Heart disease and stroke are America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers and touch all of our lives. More than 9.2 million children and adolescents (ages 6-19) are considered overweight or obese, based on the 95^th percentile or higher of body mass index (BMI). Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults. Obesity increases a person’s risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many other chronic illnesses, and it leads to higher healthcare costs. JRFH raises funds for research and programs to reduce heart disease, stroke and their risk factors and improve health in people of all ages. Since 1978, JRFH has raised more than $703 million in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

It has been found that regular periods of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (3-5 times per week) enhance children’s health, academic performance, attitudes and classroom behavior. A number of studies have demonstrated that increased physical activity is linked to better school performance, and JRFH is a great way to promote fitness. Jumping rope is a skill that students can learn now and enjoy for the rest of their lives.

The event held in Exeter was a huge success! 23 K-2 students from Exeter-Milligan raised nearly $1,800! The students had a lot of fun jumping rope with the high school student helpers and their teachers. Special thanks to everyone who helped with the event in any way, especially my high school helpers; Lana Kennedy, Vinnie Castro, Coleen Colson, Andrew Colson, Chloe Breitbach, MiKayla Ruhl, Austin Stride, and Taylor Slezak. A special thanks to the parents who let their children participate in the fund-raising part of the event and to everyone for their generous support of both the students and the American Heart Association!

York College Traveling Children's Theatre Visits Exeter-Milligan

Theatre at eight-thirty in the morning may be a little early in the day for some, but the timing was perfect for the York College Traveling Children's Theatre.

The theatre group made a stop on their whirlwind 22 show run at Exeter-Milligan Elementary School last Thursday morning and brought laughter, applause and a whole lot of theatre to the students.

The company which includes twelve student cast members in addition to assistant director Kayla Lawrence and director John Baker III, auditioned last November and started rehearsing in January.

The show, In One Basket, was written by Shirley Pugh and weaves together twelve folk and fairytales from around the world. The general theme of the short scenes was to be happy with what you have right beside you.

The students roared with laughter when the rich man paid his noisy neighbors to move and they just moved into each others homes still leaving him with noisy neighbors. A husband and wife who misused three wishes ended with the statement "happiness comes when you don't have any wishes at all."

Throughout the twelve mini scenarios the theme continues with the mother of "Gustav" who always finds her son right no matter how many mistakes he makes. The "Tale of a Mouse" in which a mouse hunts high and low for a mate and then find him in the field outside her house embodies this theme in plain language but was funny enough to keep the students and adults engrossed.

The actors showed an amazing amount of variety in character, costume and scenery. There was plenty of action to keep even Kindergarteners still in their seats. At the end of the program the actors introduced themselves, including their year in college, their hometown and their major. While many are arts majors some major in very different fields. The actors mingled with the crowd again after the show and answered the elementary students questions. Before leaving, the group invited the students to a backstage tour and showed their costumes, props and sound effects items.

If you won't have the opportunity to see this entertaining performance at a local elementary school, the York College Traveling Children's Theatre will be performing their show for the general public on April 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Gurganus Hall on the York College campus.

Exeter Girl Scouts participate in Gifts of Sharing

Exeter Troop 390 recently participated in the Gifts of Sharing project by donating cookies to the Backpack program that is sponsored by the United Methodist Church. Accepting the cookies for the program was LaVonne Guthrie who is pictured with some of the girl scouts. The are from the left Hannah Beethe, Janey Erdkamp, LaVonne Guthrie, Tara Mueller and Kaitlyn Vavra. As the Girl Scouts sold cookies, customers were given the option of purchasing cookies just for this project. The girls also donated cookies from the troop.

Lost a Dog???? UPDATED

Did you lose your dog recently? This dog was found running around near Casey's on 04-04-10. If you know the dog leave a message on the Exeter PD phone (266-5331) and they'll get back to you. It's currently in Exeter's doggie jail but if no one claims it soon they'll have to take it to York. UPDATE: The dog was adopted in town.

Pick Up Does Damage at Ball Fields

Deep ruts were cut in the new grass area.

Saturday night a late model pick was spotted in the area of the ball park and a neighborhood resident witnessed the pickup driving on the new grass that was planted last fall and doing the damage shown in the pictures. If you have any information on the driver of the pick up please contact the Village Marshall or the Village office.

Revived and Refreshed

Bob Mueller lent a hand to the Nebraska Neon Sign installers on Monday.

The Exeter neon sign return to it's spot on Highway 6 on Monday. Installers from Nebraska Neon sign replaced the revamped sign with their crane mid-morning. Bob Mueller, a member of the Exeter Foundation, which sponsored the redo on the sign was on hand to help hold things in place.

Exeter-Milligan Update - 6th Grade Science

Janey Due and Sean Maxson test unknown substances to see if they are acids or bases. Substances were actually liquids that are frequently found in the home, including milk, pickle juice, window cleaner, dish soap, and water.

Elliot Eardamp and Hunter Worrell test for acids and bases in Mrs. Julia Polak's 6th grade science class. The students have also studied physical and chemical properties of substances and have made their own "silly putty" polymer during their "chemistry" unit.
