Obituary | Melinda Lee Hofferber

Marilyn Marie (Murphy) Manning. She was one of eight children born in the family. She passed away on May 9, 2026, at Hilltop Reserve Assisted Living in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 71 years, 8 months, and 30 days.

Melinda grew up in Burress, Nebraska, and attended Exeter Public School, graduating with the class of 1972.

Melinda first married Ken Mumby, and together they had a daughter, Lisa. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Melinda earned an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 1975. After her divorce from Ken, she and Lisa returned to Lincoln, Nebraska.

On January 10, 1979, Melinda married Tom Hofferber, whom she met through her brother Tom and sister-in-law Bette Manning. Tom adopted Lisa, and the family settled on the Hofferber family farm near Fairmont, Nebraska.

Melinda’s nursing career was marked by passion, dedication, and innovation. She began working at Fillmore County Hospital, establishing the county’s first Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. While working full-time, she pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1988. She then became Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at York General Hospital from 1990 to 1999. A continuous learner, Melinda earned her Master of Science in Nursing/Advanced Practitioner Degree in Nursing in 2002 and relocated to Boulder, Colorado, where she served as a Nurse Practitioner at Rocky Mountain Cardiology (later Boulder Heart) for 20 years before retiring in 2022.

Beyond her work in the nursing field, Melinda contributed to the nursing and medical communities. She served on the board of the American Heart Association, including two years as president, and served on the board of the Nebraska Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Network, the Physician Board Review of Colorado, and the Advanced Practitioner Preceptor program. She was also active on various policy boards, offering mentorship and guidance to countless colleagues.

Melinda loved life outside of work. She enjoyed time with her friends, family, and grandchildren, often finding ways to include the great outdoors in her adventures. On the farm, she could be found working in the yard or cycling on gravel roads. Family trips to Grand Lake, Colorado were favorites, and were filled with mountain scenery, kayaking, and hiking. She also enjoyed advanced puzzles, painting, floral arrangements, and teaching Sunday School with her sister-in-law, Bette Manning, at the United Methodist Church in Geneva. Melinda was loved by all of her friends and family, and left impactful impressions on her patients and colleagues far and wide.

In the hospital, as Tess pieces together the events with a detective, she learns shocking truths about Allie's past that reframe everything. Was the attack truly random? Who was Allie beneath her dazzling interior? And most chilling of all—has Tess really escaped the danger, or is it still closing in?

One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus

Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed this. A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts. Until now. This time it's not an app, though—it's a game. Truth or Dare. Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark. Then comes Maeve and she should know better—always choose the dare. But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't count on the police for help. Or protection. Simon's gone, but someone's determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And the rules have changed.

One of Us is Back by Karen M. McManus

The third time’s a charm. It’s been almost two years since Simon died in detention, and the aftermath has been hard to shake. First the Bayview Four had to prove they weren’t killers. Then a new generation outwitted a vengeful copycat. Now the entire Bayview Crew is back home for the summer, and everyone is trying to move on. Only, this is Bayview, and life is never that simple. At first the mysterious billboard seems like a bad joke: Time for a new game, Bayview. But when a member of the Bayview Crew disappears, it’s clear this “game” is serious—and whoever’s in charge isn’t sharing the rules. Or maybe there aren’t any. Bronwyn. Cooper. Addy. Nate. Maeve. Phoebe. Knox. Luis. Kris. Everyone’s a target. And now that someone unexpected has returned to Bayview, things could start getting deadly. The thing is, Simon was right about secrets—they all come out eventually. And Bayview has a lot it’s still hiding.

My Husband's Wife by Alice Feeney

Eden Fox, an artist on the brink of her big break, sets off for a run before her first exhibition. When she returns to the home she recently moved into, Spyglass, an enchanting old house in Hope Falls, nothing is as it should be. Her key doesn’t fit. A woman, eerily similar to her, answers the door. And her husband insists that the stranger is his wife. One house. One husband. Two women. Someone is lying. Six months earlier, a reclusive Londoner called Birdy, reeling from a life-changing diagnosis, inherits Spyglass. This unexpected gift from a long-lost grandmother brings her to the pretty seaside village of Hope Falls. But then Birdy stumbles upon a shadowy London clinic that claims to be able to predict a person's date of death, including her own. Secrets start to unravel, and as the line between truth and lies blurs, Birdy feels compelled to right some old wrongs.

The Good Husband by Steve Frech

How far would you go to protect your family?

Mark Burcham and his wife Amy live the perfect life: they have a happy marriage, a comfortable home in Los Angeles and a beautiful daughter, Tatum. But one night Amy fails to come home from a business trip to Boston, and her office has no record of a client on the east coast.

Then Mark gets the worst news of all; Amy has been found dead. But nothing makes sense. Why was Amy still in town, when he’d waved her off at the airport a few days before? Who was the mysterious client she’d been meeting with for months? There’s only one thing Mark knows for certain: his wife was keeping secrets.

As he digs deeper into the life Amy tried to keep hidden, Mark realizes that someone is trying to stop him, someone who is watching his every move. And when they threaten Tatum to keep him from discovering the truth, Mark will stop at nothing to keep his family safe…
