1st Grade News

by Mrs. Kelly Rischling, Exeter-Milligan First Grade Teacher

The 1st grade class has been learning about the design process as part of our Science Unit. They were tasked with designing a boat out of modeling clay that could float. With their partners, they worked together to create their designs. The first couple of designs sank, so together they had to problem-solve before rebuilding and retesting. Too heavy? Not enough structure to keep the water out? Cracks? Then, they were put to the test to see whose boat could not only float but withstand the added weight of “cannon balls.” They all passed the challenge!

Exeter-Milligan Update: Math Musings

Math Musings

By Sandra Snyder, Exeter-Milligan Math Instructor

Linear functions are the main focus of the freshman Algebra I class at E-M.  The students are becoming experts at calculating slopes, writing equations in different forms, and applying the concepts to real-life situations.  Next up, they will collect data to make scatter plots, and then find the linear equation that best fits the data.

The Pre-Calculus class has just entered the world of Trigonometry. After reviewing right triangle trigonometry, the Unit Circle will be introduced, along with methods of solving for unknowns in acute and obtuse triangles. They are in for an exciting ride!! All students are taking this class for dual credit through Doane University in Crete.

Calculus is finding derivatives with limits.  This class is small, but they have mighty minds!!! Soon, they will learn about the properties of derivatives that will help them with the amount of time it takes them to calculate them.  They will also utilize those derivatives to find key information about the functions' graphs.  This class, too, is taken for dual credit through Doane University in Crete.

The students in these classes have been a joy to work with! They ask good questions and work hard during class.
