The Exeter G.F.W.C. Woman’s Club Arbor Day event will be held April 25, 2014 at the Exeter UCC Church fellowship hall, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The event will begin with a welcome, and, as part of the celebration, the Exeter-Milligan second graders will present a program.

 The Exeter Woman’s Club is providing trees and other special gifts to be presented to the babies and their mothers. Seedling trees will be also available to the Exeter-Milligan second-graders, for their contributions to event. In addition, guest speakers will help commemorate the day.

 

A Funeral Mass for Frances Pracheil washeld on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at the the St. Stephen Catholic Church in Exeter. Father Tom Kuffel officiated the Mass.

Four compete in regional free throw contest

Congratulations to four Exeter-Milligan students who competed at the Knights of Columbus regional free throw contest in York. Gavin Mueller won the 13 year old division and will compete at the State compettion at Grand Island Central Catholic high school on April 6.  They were sponsored by the Exeter-Friend-Milligan Council #11822 Knights of Columbus.

Exeter-Milligan Update: EMF Speech Season

The Exeter-Milligan/Friend (EMF) had a very successful inaugural season in 2024. The season began in January, with Troy Kallhoff earning a fourth-place medal in extemporaneous speaking at the meet at Adams Central. At the Thayer Central meet, Kallhoff was third in the same event while teaming up with Kmila Benitez to finish fourth in duet acting. To finish the month, EMF traveled to Humboldt for the MUDECAS Conference Meet. As a team, EMF finished fifth. Leading the team at the meet was Tucker Svec, who won humorous impromptu and was second in humorous prose. Svec earned another silver medal with teammates Benitez, Logan Krupicka, and Jase Luzum in OID. Krupicka added a fifth-place medal in humorous prose, while Benitez came home with sixth in POI. Benitez and Kallhoff were fifth in duet. Additionally, Kallhoff medaled third in extemporaneous and fourth in entertainment. Fifth-place medals were added for the EMF team by Halona Wooton in entertainment and Babe Weber in informative. 

 

February was a full schedule again for the EMF speech team beginning with a Saturday trip to Shelby. The meet was highlighted by Tucker Svec and Kiley Oldehoeft winning duet impromptu. Svec also was fourth in humorous prose. Troy Kallhoff finished third and fifth in extemporaneous and entertainment, respectively. Troy and Kmila Benitez were sixth in duet acting. A sixth-place medal in persuasive was earned by Neal Scott. The OID of Logan Krupicka, Svec, Oldehoeft, and Benitez finished third at the meet. A long weekday trip to Falls City for the Pioneer Conference Meet turned out to be successful for EMF. The team finished fifth in the overall sweepstakes standings. Kallhoff won extemporaneous and was second in entertainment, and Kmila and Troy were fifth in duet acting. Tucker finished with a bronze medal in humorous prose. The OID of Kiley, Kmila, Logan, and Tucker was fifth. 

 

Still in February, EMF participated in the Meridian Meet. First-place medals were awarded to:  Kiley Oldehoeft and Babe Weber in duet, Troy Kallhoff in entertainment, and Kmila Benitez in POI. Second-place medals went to Kmila and Troy in duet, Troy in extemporaneous, and the OID. In humorous prose, Tucker Svec was third. Halona Wooton was fifth in entertainment and humorous impromptu. Neal Scott was fifth in persuasive. Svec finished sixth in humorous prose, while Wooton, along with Kyler Sladek were sixth in duet acting. There was tough competition at Sutton. Kallhoff and Benitez earned third-place medals in duet. While Troy added a third in entertainment and a sixth in extemporaneous. At the Dunsmoor Classic in McCool, Tucker won humorous impromptu and was fifth in humorous prose. Troy finished second in extemporaneous and fourth in entertainment. The OID of Kmila, Kiley, Logan, and Tucker was sixth.

March included the rescheduled High Plains Meet, District Meet in Genoa, and the State Meet in Kearney. At High Plains, Kallhoff finished third in extemporaneous. In a tough C-2 District, Troy Kallhoff earned a trip to the State Meet, with a third-place finish in extemporaneous speaking. The OID of Benitez, Oldehoeft, Svec, and Krupicka placed sixth in the final round. At the State competition, Troy performed well in extemporaneous, winning his third preliminary round. He was tied in total rank, but was two points shy of the last qualifying spot for the final round. Troy Kallhoff had a very successful senior season, as did the entire EMF speech team in their first season.

Exeter-Milligan School board meets

 Fourteen guests attended the Exeter-Milligan school board meeting on Monday, March 18 with the majority of those staff members or spouses of board members.  Two students also attended the meeting.

The board moved through the consensus agenda and there was no policy review or curriculum report scheduled. Superintendent Paul Sheffield quickly reviewed the consolidation packet that was presented in all four of the special meetings held jointly with the Friend school board.

There were no takers when the board opened the floor for public comment.

Moving on to a discussion of the possible consolidation, Sheffield remarked that he and Friend Superintendent Derek Anderson would submit the consolidation application this summer as there are a number of steps to the process of forming a new district.

Sheffield also reported on building projects updates in Exeter including the HVAC work that is planned for this summer.  He also informed the board he has continued to work with DLR (an architecture and design firm) to “maximize the space we have if we have K-5 here.”

The district would need to add an additional classroom for each grade level.  One plan called for an addition of two new classrooms but with a price tag of $3.8 million that option was eliminated.

Currently Sheffield explained that the plan is to divide the fitness center into two kindergarten classrooms and move the fitness center and the community classroom to the current shop space.  They would also divide the small gym and create two fifth grade classrooms.

The current elementary library would become the teacher workroom as it is not handicap accessible and the current kindergarten room would be the new elementary library.

Sheffield explained that “Construction costs are high right now.  Any time you add on you have to add on a storm shelter.  Since we aren’t adding any square footage we wouldn’t have to do that.  We have the flexibility in the building fund we could fund it ourselves with what we have.”

The board made no comment on the design options and moved on to discuss teacher contracts.  Kelly Rischling accepted a contract to teach first grade next year and Sandi Snyder accepted a one year contract to teach high school math.

The board accepted the resignation of first grade teacher Haley Johnson and speech therapist Kara Myers. They also approved the principal contract.

Sheffield gave a brief rundown on finalizing the purchase agreement with the village of Milligan for the Milligan building. No dollar amount from the EM building fund has been set yet.  The final contract will be ready for the April meeting.

The board also approved an agreement with DLR to assist in the remodeling and redesign of the Exeter elementary to accommodate more classroom space.

Board President Adam Erdkamp took a moment to speak about recent newspaper articles published in the Nebraska Signal. He went on to note that the writer had not attended any of the recent special meetings or board meetings. Erdkamp reiterated his support for Sheffield and the EM staff.

Next meeting was set for April 8 at Milligan at 8 p.m.

Family Art Night: Under the Sea

Creating an aquarium, folding an origami whale and fishing for prizes were just part of the fun at Family Art Night at Exeter-Milligan on Tuesday, March 19.

The event is produced, directed and sponsored by the art department with preparation starting in January.  The department, under the tutelage of art teacher Lisa Kanode, throws out ideas for the annual event and then a theme is chosen by the high school art students vote.

Kanode introduced the event in 2015 and it has grown in attendance each year since.  Kanode explained, “Family art night is a special event that many can benefit from.  Starting with the volunteers and helpers as they get an opportunity to teach and interact with kids.  Families benefit as they have the opportunity to spend quality time with their kiddos in an unique way.”

The event not only introduces different art mediums to the younger students, but it also gives the 6^th -12^th graders enrolled in Kanode’s art classes the chance to interact and teach.  Since all of the family is encouraged to attend and this gives the students running each booth the opportunity to interact with all ages. The art students are vital in planning and designing each station for the event.

Kanode has seen a direct impact in the art department in the student body, “I definitely see a growing interest in art, even in just helping out with family art night." 

“It’s very student driven.  It benefits those who might want to go into education.  The students are sometimes nervous but I think they do fine. They get to pick what station they are going to do and then figure out what they need for each station. I give them some direction and let them run with it,” Kanode added.

 

This year there were 10 stations including an origami station, paper design, build your own jellyfish, photo booth, computer animated station, sailboat snack station, make your own aquarium, fishing and of course, face painting.

"I think we worked harder on this particular art night than on any other year," Kanode said, "I had one student comment that you don't realize how much work goes into this until you are involved."

 Kanode was most pleased with the results of the aquarium.  The participants started with a clear clamshell food container and then glued sand, rocks and created their own paper coral and fish to put inside.

In addition to the activities, there was also an art show of all of the projects the Exeter-Milligan students have created throughout the year.  In the commons area, the book fair was set up so families could take a break in the art action.

 

Throwback Thursday 3/23/2014

Exeter-Milligan Senior Logan Zeleny signed with Central Community College on Wednesday, March 26th.  Zeleny will play catcher this fall as the Columbus catcher.

The Applied Science class has been studying Siege Machines and each student has built model catapults.   By varying the projectile size and tension used to power the catapult, they investigated how far the projectile traveled.   They also made trebuchets, shown in the picture.   They calculated how much mass they need in order for the projectile to hit a wall that was placed a set distance away.

Exeter-Milligan students were invited to select their artwork to compete in the Exeter GFWC Woman's Club Art competition.  The winners of this competition were taken to the district GFWC competition in Seward.

Happy Birthday Nebraska!!!!

Exeter-Milligan fourth graders celebrated Nebraska’s 157th birthday. We had ice cream and Capri suns. It was so nice that we were also able to enjoy the Nebraska sunshine for an extra recess in the afternoon. The students thought we should celebrate Nebraska’s birthday every day.

Spanish Update

Spanish 2 students at EM have been working diligently to form and use usted and ustedes commands.  As part of their learning, they created commercials to convince the class that their restaurant was the best and that we should all come to eat at their establishment. In addition to commands, they used new vocabulary for food and flavor. Next, they will be working on creating a cooking segment and giving specific instructions from delicious recipes of their choice.

Throwback Thursday 3/16/2014

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce served several hundred people at their annual Free Pancake feed on March 10th. 

Kara Myers’ reading group, the "Shining Stars,” are "soaring" through the Reading Mastery series.  They are proud to announce they have successfully finished Signatures 1 (orange book) and are now embarking into Signatures 2 (green book)!  They will continue to sound out difficult words and read well and quickly.  They will learn how to remember information that is important and how to use that information to answer questions.  These "bright" students will be able to read with better understanding for subjects like science and social studies.  They will also work on important writing and language skills.  Best of all, they will continue to find out that reading is enjoyable!

Exeter-Milligan Elementary students turned on the lights and pulled up the current for the Spring Concert on Tuesday, March 11 in the Milligan gymnasium. Guests were invited to enjoy the Elementary Art Show before and after the concert.

Tied at half-time in front of an over capacity crowd at Lincoln East, the Storm just blew into Lincoln a little bit harder than the Timberwolves.  The Timberwolves came back from a double digit deficit in the third and fourth quarters but only got within four points before the buzzer sounded at the end of the game.  The T-wolves had a great season and once again gave Exeter and Milligan a group of student athletes to be proud of.  Thanks!  High Plains Storm 49 - 45 Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves

Alex is the son of Mark and Starlene Benorden of Exeter. He is a senior at Exeter/Milligan High School and will be awarded a $1000 per year scholarship to
