New school year, new look

 

With the new NSAA cooperative formed with Exeter-Milligan and Friend it was time for a change on the coach bus the students travel in for their many activities.

 

The rebranding of their coach bus happened this summer by Exeter-Milligan alum A. J. Hansen. The Timberwolves were removed and Friend was added along with new Bobcat logos and a giant Bobcat head on both sides of the bus. 

 

Hansen, who along with his wife, Brittany, own Cordova Custom (in Cordova) where they have large scale cutting equipment and provide decals for just about anything.  Hansen had previously created the Timberwolf decals and was happy to create the new Bobcat artwork. 

 

Exeter-Milligan and Friend transportation company, A & M, Inc. is ready to transport EMF students in style for the new cooperative.

The Exeter Aquatic center shortened its hours with school starting on August 14.

 

Exeter-Milligan Public School hosted an Open House Monday August 12th at both campuses.  Students, their parents, along with community members were welcome to meet the faculty and staff, view the school and the equipment.  Students could find their classes, check out their desks and talk to their teachers. 

 

Exeter-Milligan has three new teachers and one student teacher this semester.  Sara Lincoln, a student teacher from York College, Tyler Hinton, who will teach art, Lisa Soukup, the new Media Specialist and Technology teacher and Allison Brahm, teaching 6^th grade.   New Kitchen staff at Exeter-Milligan includes Vicki Klemm and Karen Sluka.

 

Exeter Preschool/Playschool, Inc will hold an Open House on August 20 from 6-7 in the preschool room.  All kids in the school district that are at least age 3 by the start of classes are eligible. Parents will fill out necessary paperwork and receive handbooks, etc while kids play, meet teacher, and check out the classroom.

Obituary Larry Cudaback

 Larry Lee Cudaback was born on December 14, 1939, to Clarence and Agnes (Becker) Cudaback at home in rural Fillmore County. He died peacefully on August 10, 2023 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 7 months, and 27 days.

Larry grew up on a farm northwest of Exeter and attended Fillmore County Rural School District #27 until the 8th grade, and graduated from Exeter High School in 1957. He worked for the Burlington Railroad and in 1959, he went to Lincoln and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was inducted in November, 1959, and received his basic training at Ft. Hood, TX and Ft. Knox, KY. He was sent to Erlangen, Germany, where he would spend the next 3 years. He was honorably discharged in November, 1962.

One fateful night later that November, a couple of his railroad buddies told Larry, “You have to meet the two tallest girls in Lincoln.” (meaning Bonnie and her sister, Jean.) When the door opened and Bonnie laid eyes on Larry, she threw her arms around him and said, “Where have you been all of my life?” The rest, as they say, is history, and they were married July 18, 1964.

Upon returning from the honeymoon, he was persuaded into farming a quarter of land north of Exeter. The farm operation grew and Larry was at his happiest when he was working in the fields or just making sure his farm equipment was clean and had his farm yard looking perfect. His greatest enjoyment was watching his daughters and grandchildren participate in their many sporting events. Larry and Bonnie enjoyed traveling and were able to visit the majority of the 50 states. Larry retired from farming in 2002 when Brad White and sons took over the operation, and then he and Bonnie left the family farm and moved into town in 2006.

Larry served on the Exeter School Board for several years, the Fillmore County ASC Committee, Exeter Township Board, Fillmore County Groundwater Board, and the Exeter Cooperative Elevator Board. He was a lifetime member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Agnes, his brother, Bill, and his sister-in-law, B. Jean Price.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn & Shane Welch and their daughter, Sara of Smithfield, Kentucky; Darcy & Brad White of Exeter, and their children, Dillan of Exeter, Claire (Derek) Tachovsky of Friend, Nolan (Whitney) of Exeter, Cameron of Exeter, and Katherine of Geneva; Stacey & Randy Hall of York, and their children, Justin (Molly) of York, Malinda (Colin Monteforte) of Geneva, and Sydney of Farwell; great granddaughters, Emerson and Rowan Monteforte, Adaline White, Avery Lukasiewicz, and Lauren Tachovsky; brother and sisters-in-law, Roger & Sharon, and Judy Cudaback all of Exeter; brothers-in-law, Harry Imm and Robert Imm of Stromsburg; nieces and nephews and many friends

 A Mass of Christian Burial for Larry will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Exeter, Nebraska with Father Brendan Kelly presiding.

Praying of Rosary will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Exeter, Nebraska with Father Brendan Kelly leading the Rosary.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with family present from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter, Nebraska.

Military Graveside Services will be held following the funeral mass at the Exeter Cemetery in Exeter, Nebraska.

Memorials are to be directed to Exeter-Milligan School Foundation or the St. Stephen Catholic Church Building Fund.

A flyer highlighting barn quilts in the Fillmore County was posted.  There were seven at the Exeter Care Center.

 

Emily Manning was named the Wilber Czech Queen this year.  She is the daughter of Mark and Leanne Manning of Kramer and the granddaughter of Tom and Marilyn Manning of Burress and Rex and the late Betty Brown of rural Fairmont.  

 

 

Cub Scouts in Exeter Pack 218 enjoyed an afternoon learning to bowl in York last Monday.  The scouts also got some tips and a tour from Bob Crosby at the bowling alley.  After bowling two games the scouts stopped for supper and headed by to Exeter.  Attending were Josh Meyer, Tyler Due, Mikey Bartu, Troy Kallhoff, Blake Meyer, Clint Oldehoeft, Ben Bartu and Braden Capek.

“Throwback” was the theme for this year’s Exeter Days.  It was definitely a throwback to a great family fun weekend for the entire community.

 

The weekend began on Friday with discounted Lemony Split drinks and wine and spirits tasting in the Legion.  A meal was served at the Legion sponsored by the Exeter Area Community Foundation with a free will donation to sponsor Liberty Johnson, and Kiley Oldehoeft for their upcoming ambassadors trip as well as Jozie Kanode’s mission trip this summer.

Kids could enjoy the “Oceans of Fun” art experience at the Legion to help get them in a water mindset.

The beer mile relay started at 7 p.m. and was definitely a hot ticket with heat indexes over 100 degrees.

To end the evening “Finding Nemo” was shown outdoors for everyone to enjoy.

Saturday was jam packed but had a bit of a rocky start with a thunderstorm that dropped nearly two inches of rain in Exeter coupled with high winds.  There was no damage and some quick rearranging allowed for most of the days activities to begin.  The color run was postponed to a later date but the three on three tournament was moved inside the Exeter-Milligan school gym.

The fire department held their annual bake sale, the car show started a little late along with the vendor fair.  The food trucks arrived just in time to set up for lunch and hometown author Allison ‘Michl’ Bitz was available to sign her book at the library.  The grand parade started at 12:30 and the candy started flying.  The “Throwback” theme was evident as there was a trailer with Exeter, Exeter-Milligan, Friend and Milligan jersey’s represented and next came a trailer of current Exeter-Milligan and Friend students sporting their new Bobcat gear.

After the parade there was pie (homemade by Exeter Woman’s Club members) and ice cream (served by the Handy Hands 4-H club)in the legion along with a polka band. 

A cornhole tournament and a rib cook off were popular events along with bingo on Saturday afternoon.  Dan Votipka came in first in the rib contest with Jim Mueller in second place.

The evening street dance featured a meal at the Legion and the band “DadRock” making a repeat appearance at Exeter Days.

Sunday began with Community church service in the park and lots of food trucks.  The Triathlon was held in the park with multiple age divisions.  Winners included:

6 and under – 1^st place Shiloh Carver, 2^nd place Kolbie Kahlandt

7 – 10 – 1^st place Tommy Kallhoff, 2^nd place Paul Kallhoff

11 -14 – 1^st place Wil Kallhoff, 2^nd place Collin McCoy

15- 18 – 1^st place Troy Kallhoff, 2^nd place Aidan Vavra

19 and Up – 1^st place Jordan Pella, 2^nd place Darth Kanode

 

After the triathlon was finished the kids enjoyed a huge water balloon fight in the park with an Exeter fire truck making a special appearance to add more water to the fight.

 

The Exeter Senior Center held a 25^th year celebration lunch fundraiser at the Legion for lunch and then there was a poker tournament for Sunday afternoon entertainment.

The entire weekend was planned and executed by the Exeter Community Club who worked hard all year and definitely earned the communities appreciation for an excellent “Throwback.”
