All-State Ensemble

On Wednesday, November 16th, Gracelyn Becker and Crosby Oldehoeft had the opportunity to attend the All-State Orff Ensemble at the yearly NMEA Conference in Lincoln, NE. Orff-Schulwerk is a teaching concept in Music Education which involves learning music through what kids do naturally; play. This involves lots of singing, movement, and playing keyboard percussion instruments. That’s exactly what they did at the All-State Orff Ensemble as they told the story of a typical “school day” through song and movement, accompanied by instruments. “Lunch time” included the use of lunch trays during a food fight which was accompanied by the keyboard percussion instruments. “Recess time” involved various kinds of movements and dance-like features, many of which the students came up with themselves. Finally, the end of the day featured a beautifully sung lullaby which put all the kids to sleep, ready to rise again the next morning and do it all again!

Exeter Cub Scout Pack 218 spent part of their meeting last Monday making holiday greeting cards to send to the American Red Cross.  The Red Cross distributes the cards to wounded military personnel in the States.

Santa visited Exeter on Saturday morning.  There were lots of lists given to Santa while he was here and the kids enjoyed visiting with him .  Each child also received a gift bag from Santa and the rest of their time was spent playing Christmas Bingo.  The Exeter Chamber of Commerce sponsored the visit with Santa and the Bingo.

Exeter-Milligan met Friend in basketball.  The EM boys won 68-52 and the girls lost a close matchup 46-42

 

Swim trunks, snorkels and a surfin’ Santa filled the Exeter-Milligan gymnasium Tuesday evening as the Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten through sixth grade presented their Christmas program, “Surfin’ Santa.”

 

The third through the sixth graders performed the musical “Surfin’ Santa.”  The third and fourth grade classes were dressed in their best surf and vacation outfits while the fifth graders played the elves and the sixth graders were the members of the cast.

 

Peytan Brandt played the Santa who was struggling to make it through another cold winter with his main elf, Jingle, played by Mitchell Manning.  Mrs. Clause was played by Katherine White.  The bad guy, Mr. Grimley, was played by Spencer Pribyl with his sidekick “Wally,” Trever Zelenka.  Kevin (Joel Klemm) and Ellen (Macy Due) overheard Mr. Grimley’s plans to take over Santa’s workshop and mailed themselves to the North Pole only to find that Santa had already left for an island vacation.

 

Santa is kept busy by the activities director, Marvin (Theron Odvody) and snorkels and surfs before his head elf, Jingle arrives. Jingle convices Santa and Mrs. Claus that they didn’t really win a vacation, it was all a plot to take away their toy workshop. They return just in time to save Christmas and Mr. Grimley decides to donate his extra toys to Santa.

 

Mrs. Angie Murphy, K-12 music teacher, directed the program for the elementary students.

Art at Exeter-Milligan

Hasting’s Mural Contest is among the highlights for this year’s E-M art students. A team of artist’s prepared for the challenge and participated with nearly 40 other schools across the state at Hasting’s College. This year’s theme was “Hometown Postcard” which suited us just fine as we spent the summer and beginning of the school year leaning on the theme of “Small town proud” and “Small school proud” promoted by EM principal Mrs. Kroll. The team consisted of Art II students- Kmila Benitez, Liberty Johnson, Joni Vossler and Emma Meyer and Art I students - Owen Real and Tucker Svec. The group went right to work making a plan for their mural once they received the theme. The team had from 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM to complete their mural. Things they discovered that they will do differently next year is to bring some padding for their knees, a couple bag chairs to sit in when they needed a break and maybe even a table to work on. For the most part they worked well together as a team and leaned on each other’s strengths.  Winning this year’s contest was Kearney High with a gorgeous mural of a sandhills crane. It would be nice of they would separate class A-B with C-D schools as I do think a lot of smaller schools did an amazing job!

 

Later on in the semester the high school art students traveled to Omaha for a program put on by the Omaha Symphony called “Celebrate Creativity”. They E-M kids tried a variety of workshops from acting and stage makeup to yarn painting and stage combat. They finished the day with a performance by the Omaha Symphony that compared the visual art element of line with performance art. Overall the kids thought it was a good experience and would recommend it for future field trips.

Civilizations in First Grade

Students in First Grade are learning about civilizations of the past during our Knowledge time! Students just learned about how ancient Mesopotamians wrote using cuneiform so they were challenged with trying it out themselves! Turns out writing using letters may be much easier!

The Lady Timberwolves rallied in the second half and got close to defeating the Huskies but just didn't have enough time to finish 38-44.
