Exeter-Milligan family loses home
Three Exeter-Milligan students, and their family, the Luke Meyer family of Ohiowa, lost their home in a fire on Thursday morning.
The oldest son, Blake, a 2021 Exeter-Milligan graduate was home at the time and was able to escape unharmed. He was also able to safely evacuate the family pets. No cause of the fire has been determined as of yet.
The fire department from Ohiowa was able to contain the blaze on the second story of the home.
Josh, a tenth grader at Exeter-Milligan, along with Emma, in ninth grade and Natalie in sixth grade were at school when the home caught fire.
Collections of money and gift cards are being gathered at the Exeter-Milligan school office and several other locations throughout the county. A go fund me page has also been established and there is an account in their name at York State Bank. Many have already donated enough clothing to fill the needs of the family.
According to Exeter-Milligan Superintendent Paul Sheffield the students have taken the lead to help the Meyer family. They have organized a document for students and teachers to list items they plan to donate to the family. A junior, Hannah Busboom, is spearheading the project.
He added, “The response has been overwhelming! EVERYONE has gone out of their way to assist the family. This is just a testament to the family atmosphere within the Exeter and Milligan communities.”
The Meyers hope to rebuild their home in Ohiowa and are currently staying with family. Heather Meyer has expressed the families gratitude for the immediate and generous response, "We are at a loss of words for everything everyone has done. And thank you just doesn't feel like it's enough!"

Exeter-Milligan Girls Beat McCool in final home game of the season
Exeter-Milligan had no problem conquering McCool Junction 52-42 for their last home game of the season. Parents night was before the game as the girls recognized the support of their parents and the seniors presented their parents with flowers.

Obituary Ralph "Butch" Jansen
Ralph “Butch” Eugene Jansen of Exeter, NE, was born in Geneva, NE, on August 27, 1946, to Ardis and Rudolph Jansen and passed away February 6, 2022 at the age of 75.
He grew up on a farm just west of town and attended Exeter Public School. He graduated in 1964 and then went to the University of Nebraska Lincoln for 2½ years before getting drafted. Butch served his country full and part-time until 1973.
On June 13, 1970, he married the love of his life, Barbara Ethington. To this union, two daughters were born, Kristen and Erin. In 1972 Butch and Barb moved to the family farmstead north of Exeter. There he farmed until he transitioned to a rural mail carrier.
Butch loved his family. He was known for his one-liners, his kindness, & quiet demeanor. He looked so forward to his family time, whether it be around the dinner table, at the grandkid’s activities, watching the Huskers, phone calls, and stopping for breakfast any time of the day. He was a man of few words–they would either marinate into your soul or allow you to giggle for hours after.
Butch donated his time and service to others throughout his life. He served the Exeter School Board, Quad County Coop Board, and Exeter Rural Fire Board. He was also a previous Commander and member of the Legion Post 218, Commander of the Legion Color Guard, and the Fillmore Veterans’ Advisory Council. Additionally, he served in many capacities at the UCC Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ardis and Rudolph Jansen; brothers-in-law Rol Stock, Ron Davis & Jerry Krause; sister in law, Jean Stock; and nephew Marc Krause.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jansen of Exeter; Daughter Kristen Jansen-Ruhl and Ryan Ruhl children Payton, Tyler, and Jakob of Cairo, Nebraska; Daughter Erin Jansen and daughter Aliya Awadey of Denver, Colorado; sister Shirley Krause of Geneva, Nebraska; sister Colleen Davis of Hastings, Nebraska; Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law Carol and Larry Starr of Crete, Nebraska plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Felix Ochsenfeld,
fondly nicknamed Fez after the foreign exchange student on That 70's
Show, arrived to spend the school year with the Paul Sheffield family. Ochsenfeld is from Luenen, Germany.
After a foot of heavy wet snow in the
Exeter area starting Friday evening, trees and bushes were weighted down to
their maximum with many breaking under the weight. The only thing that
could have made the Exeter-Milligan students happier about the snow would be a
snow day. Despite having to go to school, the Exeter-Milligan elementary
students had a blast playing on the piles of snow cleared from their
playground.
The Exeter Chamber of Commerce hosted
their FREE Community Pancake Feed Monday, Feb 6, from 5 - 7 pm.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Speech Meet
The Exeter-Milligan speech team traveled to Hampton on Wednesday, February 23, to compete in the CRC Meet, which was originally scheduled to take place at Meridian. During the preliminary rounds, almost all of the EM entries performed very well. However, the entries from other conference schools were performing at a high level as well. Troy Kallhoff was the lone qualifier for finals for EM. In the finals of extemporaneous speaking, he finished with a strong performance, earning second place.
A few days later, the Exeter-Milligan speech team was again competing. This time at a Saturday meet in McCool. Again, there was very good competition. Kmila Benitez was only a few spots out of the medals, finishing ninth in humorous prose. At the McCool Meet, Troy Kallhoff advanced to the finals, bringing home a fourth place medal in the extemporaneous event. The Exeter-Milligan speech team will be preparing for the District Meet, which will be held on Friday this week in McCool.
