What Did You Learn Today

What did you learn at school today? Have you ever asked this question when your child gets home from school? Many times the response is a quick “nothing”. Second grade students at Exeter-Milligan are excited to share what they learned during the week! Why? A classroom vlog has been created to outline what students have learned. A vlog is a personal website account where videotaped posts are recorded. The students are responsible for what will be reported and actually do their own broadcasting on the weekly vlog. Each Friday, classmates first organize their thoughts about what they studied during the week. Some students jot down objectives from class. Others reflect, with friends, topics discussed throughout the week. Each individual decides what they are going to describe related to their assigned subject. Preparation for the vlog is a subtle way to have the group once again process what they have learned. Using an app, called Seesaw, children are then videotaped revealing some of the highlights of their week’s learning. Some students choose to demonstrate their new knowledge; like playing a new beat learned during music or showing how to do two-digit subtraction. Others proudly share a project made in science or social studies. One by one each person contributes what was introduced, practiced or even mastered during class. After the videotape has been published, the link to access the video is then shared with students’ parents. This method keeps online transmission safe and private. After viewing the vlog, parents may post a message related to it. Students can read these comments. Parent response to this form of communication has been great. Some have expressed they look forward to hearing what the kids have learned. Other parents have even stated they watch the video with their child. This way they get even more details about what goes on during their child’s week at school

 

 

Throwback Thursday March March 4, 2011

 

Exeter Pack 218 celebrated the birthday of Scouting Sunday, February 27th at the Exeter American Legion Home. Scouts earned their rank awards.  Tiger Cubs were Braden Capek, Ben Bartu and Alec Schleuter.  Jackson Beethe earned his Wolf badge and Clint Oldehoeft earned his bobcat badge.  Cayden Hartmann earned his Bear badge.  Webelos badge earners were Peyton Brandt and Johnny Babula.  Earning their arrow of light, the highest award in Cub Scouts, were Eric Olsen, Travis Gilliam and Joey Bartu.

The Cross Roads Conference Honor Band and Choir will be held on Tuesday, March 15th.  Congratulations to Exeter-Milligan students Amanda Dinneen, Linsey Klemm, Deidre Stevens, Kelsey Moore, Jennifer Pribyl, Cody Soukup, Tyler Manning, Jalen Maxson and Rebecca Vossler for their selection to the group.

Exeter-Milligan Lady Timberwolves lost a hard fought battle at the State Basketball tournament to the Howells Bobcats Thursday afternoon at Lincoln Southwest High School.  The score stayed close the entire game but the Bobcats just edged out the Timberwolves 42 -39 handing the Timberwolves only their second loss on the season. 

Exeter-Milligan GIrls Fall at State Tournament

 

Exeter-Milligan were seeded #5 in the State Basketball tournament.  They met #4 Mullen at Lincoln Northstar at 1:30 on Wednesday afternoon.  Final score was 53-30.  Mullen moves on to meet #1 Humphrey St. Francis.

Third Grade News

The Exeter-Milligan Third Graders got their feet wet by working on a Figurative Language Unit in Language Arts. They were busy as beavers and had tons of fun identifying and interpreting different types of figurative language. Similes, metaphors, idioms, personification, hyperboles, alliteration and onomatopoeias were the focus of the unit. Incorporating them into their own writing will be the next step. Students in the pictures were working together to identify and interpret idioms. They were all on the ball and able to wrap their heads around this sometimes difficult concept.

 

Exeter Wins District- Headed to State!!

Exeter-Milligan girls played their district final at home on Friday night before a near (COVID) capacity crowd.  The Timberwolves, ranked #5,  played a very tough Nebraska Christian #12 team.  The game was close throughout with the final 48-39.  The Timberwolves will meet Mullen on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Lincoln Northstar High School for the first round of the D-2 State Championship.  Tickets are only available through pre-purchase only from a special link.  They will not be able to be available for purchase at the game.

 

Throwback Thursday February 25, 2011

 

The Exeter-Milligan High School senior English class recently studied the well-known soliloquy that appears in act III, scene I of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Some may recognize the often quoted first words, “To be, or not to be: that is the question.” In the famous lines the main character, Hamlet, speaks thoughtfully and agonizingly to himself about the question of whether to commit suicide to end the pain of experience. He says that the miseries of life are such that no one would willingly bear them, except that they are afraid of “something after death.” Because we do not know what to expect in the afterlife, we would rather “bear those ills we have,” Hamlet says, “than fly to others that we know not of.”

The senior students, after discussing the passage, were asked to rewrite the famous lines, pose a different question, and weigh the consequences and benefits of each outcome as Hamlet did in his soliloquy.

 

Two young men, Landon Rhodes and Cody Soukup, were honored on Sunday afternoon by the Scouting community surrounding Cordova. They were presented their Eagle Scout Rank at a Court of Honor at the Cordova Community Center.

 

Mary Schlegelmilch of Exeter was recently chosen to show her photographs as part of an exhibit at more than a dozen different locations throughout Lincoln.

“Written in Lights and Shadows” is part of 2011 Lincoln PhotoFest which is a city wide event celebrating photography with exhibitions in both galleries and other spaces throughout Lincoln. Schlegelmilch’s work is displayed at A to Z Printing in southwest Lincoln along with the work of five other artists all from Nebraska.

 Lori Lea (Neemann) Becker was born January 20th, 1962 to Roger (Gator) and Dorothy Faye Neemann in Lincoln, Nebraska. She lost her battle with cancer February 20th, 2011.

The Exeter-Milligan American Government class attended Fillmore County Government Day on February 24, 2011 in Geneva.  Students had the opportunity to learn about the various functions of the County offices.  The students participated in the Annual County Government Jeopardy contest.  Fifty questions about state and county government were asked to random participants from all schools using the Jeopardy format.  The final jeopardy question was "The year the Courthouse was built."  All three schools answered the final question correctly and Exeter-Milligan won the contest by scoring 1050 points, Fillmore Central finished second with 1040 points, and Shickley finished with 400 points.

The Exeter G.F.W.C. displayed their judged art show at the Exeter Public Library.  The show included works from Exeter-Milligan students and community members.
