John Graham and Rhonda Walford recently purchased Gator’s Pub, in downtown Exeter, from long-time owner Faye Neeman. Faye and her late husband, “Gator,” had owned the bar since 1981. The bar has been renamed, “John E’s.”
Mrs. Weber's second graders learn about
famous artists in art class each week. This week, students learned about an American folk artist, Edward Hicks. Students had to include a theme of peace and harmony in
their pictures, as Hicks did in his artwork.

Outdoor Education Day

On September 25, second graders and biology II students from Exeter-Milligan took to the outdoors for their day of learning. This day, called Outdoor Education Day, was a day filled with nature-related activities and learning. Preparation began long before this day. Miss Sliefert, high school biology II teacher, and Mrs. Weber, second grade teacher, met to discuss topics for the day. Teaching units were prepared with objectives for students’ learning. Next, high school biology II students scanned the teacher-prepared packets and continued research on the topic to be taught. Necessary materials were gathered for the lessons. Second graders prepared for this day by learning about plants, animals and different habitats to gain background information. Finally, these two groups of students met at Gilbert Park in Exeter. Biology II students led the lessons with second graders rotating around the centers. EM biology II student, Brianna Capek stated, “This is like a full circle because we did this as second graders and now, as juniors, we are leading it. It’s cool.”
Throughout the day, students measured their shadows and compared their results. Centers at this year’s Outdoor Education Day included: wind, recycling, tracks, water cycle and oceans in a bottle, insects, tree rings, eat like a bird and bird feeders, rainsticks and senses. The day also included nature-related games like Bat and Moth, Hug-a-tree and a scavenger hunt. Grade 2 student, Kolt Songster remarked, “It doesn’t even feel like school because this is so awesome.”
Journal time at each center ended that session as was a way to measure what elementary students learned. High school students were evaluated on the presentation and preparedness of their lesson.
Some may ask, why is class time spent outdoors learning about nature? Research shows that contact with nature can enhance creativity, bolster mood, lower stress, improve mental acuity and productivity, cultivate social connectedness, and promote physical activity. It also offers a wealth of educational benefits for teaching and learning. Archer Engert summed up his day of learning about nature by saying, “This was the best day ever.”

Exeter-Milligan Update: Third Grade

E-M’s third graders have been learning about the Engineering Process in Science. They were working on finding a solution for watering their indoor classroom plants over a two-week break. Each group designed their own irrigation system and tested it out. They did not get the results that they were hoping for, but they all certainly have a better understanding of the engineering process.

Exeter-Milligan/Friend falls short against Amherst
Amherst started at a furious pace and never slowed down. The scored on their second possession with 6:34 left in the first and had a rare gem in the 8-man game, a field goal kicker. 0-7
With 2:10 left in the first quarter Amherst found the end zone again 0-14
Their third run down the field the Bobcats held them at 4th and 6 when Amherst attempted a 42 yard field goal that was no good.
The Bobcats fumbled after pulling the ball from the one yard line to the 12 and Amherst recovers and scores 0-21 10:30 in half.
Amherst gets the ball back to the Bobcat 15 but a block in the back brings it back to the 10. The Bobcat defense fights hard, forces a fumble and Christian Weber recovers it in the end zone giving the Bobcats 6 on the board with 7:36 in the half.Broncos tack on another 7 6 to 28 537 left in half.
The Broncos don't let up and tack on another touch down and kick to make it 6-35
EMF sends the ball into the end zone on a pass from Daysan Staskal to Jackson Beethe. 12-35 with 9 seconds left in the half.
EMF added six on a Breckan Schluter run with 3:53 left in the game. Final 18-56

Exeter-Milligan Update: FCS and FCCLA News
FCS and FCCLA News-

EM FCS Dept. has settled into the new "normal". The Foods & Nutrition classes have covered sanitation, food storage and food borne illnesses, we are now moving into food preparation techniques. This unit will consist of measuring ingredients, cutting foods, mixing ingredients, and coating techniques. Individual labs will be conducted during this unit of study.
Interpersonal Relationships have studied "Who am I", written a letter to themselves to receive in the future, practiced the 6 decision making steps, identified their personal values, and are now learning about SMART goals. (specifice, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely).
FCS 7 students have cut out their masks and aprons. They are learning to use sewing tools and will begin practicing their sewing skills using paper designs and then get to sewing on their projects.
Child Development has been learning about the responsibilities of being a parent, children's rights, the individual life cycle, heredity vs. environment and the complex organ of the brain. Introduction to child theorists will be studied to understand their contribution to child development.
EM FCCLA-
Officers for the 2020-2021 year are: District #4 President- Jaiden Papik, President- Daisy Kanode, Vice-President- Emma Olsen, Treasurer- Georgia Meyer, PR/Social Media- Cammie Harrison.
EM FCCLA sponsored a "5th Quarter" activity following the EM vs. Tri-County football game. All 7-12 graders were invited to view a movie outdoors and enjoy some light snacks for FREE. 32 students attended the event and enjoyed the movie - Napoleon Dynamite. It was a nice evening to enjoy an outdoor movie.
EM FCCLA members had the opportunity to attend the Virtual Fall Leadership Workshop on Monday, Sept. 21st. Over 1,000 FCCLA members and advisers from across Nebraska attended. This workshop was attended by all District #4 FCCLA Chapters in lieu of the District Leadership Conference. EM FCCLA chose to participate as a group for the breakout sessions and to hold their monthly meeting and complete a chapter service project. Sessions included: Opening and Closing ceremony by the FCCLA State Officers, view the keynote presentations of the District #4 Chapters and District #4 Officer Introductions. Members were able to understand the History of FCCLA through the 75th anniversary presentation. We took time out to do team building activities and take in sessions by MADD, Yoga, AmeriCorps, and community service projects. In our chapter meeting we discussed PTC bake sale, roadside cleanup and Trick or Treat so Others May Eat- food drive. We were able to complete our "Notes for the Nursing Home". Members wrote notes to residents of Tabitha-Crete to introduce themselves and share a little bit themselves as related to the writing prompts provided. EM FCCLA Chapter also completed a school project of providing totes with personal hygiene items for the girl's restrooms. These items will be refilled and tended to by the EM Officers.
