Exeter-Milligan FCCLA Chapter Attends District #4 FCCLA Leadership Conference

On October 2, 2019 21 members of the Exeter-Milligan FCCLA Chapter joined approximately 360 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members gathered at Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska for the FCCLA District 4 Leadership Conference. These 7 schools came together: Bruning-Davenport Middle School, Bruning-Davenport High School, Cross County, Doniphan-Trumbull, Exeter-Milligan, Fillmore Central, and Sutton. All members in attendance grew their leadership skills with the conference theme “Take the Plunge with FCCLA.”

Chapters were welcomed to the conference by the District 4 Officers, followed by the presentation of the Colors by Bruning-Davenport Middle School Chapter and the National Anthem by Sammie Osentowski from the Cross County Chapter. A Mixer provided members an opportunity to meet students from other chapters which was led by Nick Andrews from the Fillmore Central Chapter. The Chapter Showcase Presentation, created by Tanner Bolte from the Bruning-Davenport Middle School Chapter, featured the FCCLA Chapters within District 4 and their chapter highlights.

Chapters also displayed past STAR projects and Chapter “Shout Out” boards.

Our State Officer, Caitlin Murphy from the Exeter-Milligan Chapter, and PEER Education Officers from Aurora and Twin River Chapters, also welcomed the FCCLA members.

As a group, the keynote session was from the Sunny D’s from Hastings High School. This program uses theater to discuss the facts regarding HIV/AIDS. The stories shared were of actual people from Nebraska living with HIV/AIDS. Each member attended 4 breakout sessions, these sessions were designed to help build leadership skills. Sessions included: Volunteering – Lead4Change, Entrepreneurship, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education Tour, Dental Assisting/Health Occupations Tour, Business Careers Tour, Peer Education, Chapter Activities & Ice Breakers, Chapter Service Project, Yoga, Accessorize with Confidence, Mental Health & Stress, Dollars & Sense, State Officer, STAR Events, and Sunny D’s.

The last session of the day was the afternoon keynote with Taylor Siebert from STRIV. He shared his career journey and keys to success focusing on three key areas: SERVE – WORK – CONNECT.

District 4 Officers for the 2019–2020 conducted the opening and closing ceremonies, and those officers were: President Maddy Stock (Doniphan-Trumbull), Vice-President Makayla Messenger (Sutton), Secretary/Treasurer Addi Crocket (Bruning-Davenport HS), VP of Public Relations Hannah Linn (Cross County), VP of Recreation Nick Andrews (Fillmore Central), VP of Media/Tech/Historian Tanner Bolte (Bruning-Davenport MS), and VP of STAR Jaiden Papik (Exeter-Milligan). The District 4 Adviser is Susan Biba from the Fillmore Central Chapter.

Exeter-Milligan Wins Both Matches at CRC Tournament

 Exeter-Milligan swept East Butler in their first match on Saturday afternoon 25-15 and 25-19.
Just a few weeks ago EM met Cross County at a tri in Milligan and while they played tough only managed to win the second set against a tall Cross County team.  Well the tables turned as EM lost the first set 18-25 but won the second 25-20 and the third set 25-19.  They will meet BDS at the York City Auditorium on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.

EMF Posts a Win at Waco

EMF got on the board early at Waco on Friday night.  On their first possession Christian Weber handed the ball off to Casey Jindra who went all the way into the end zone for a touchdown. Weber tossed a pass to Jackson Beethe into the end zone for the two point conversion.  8-0

Later in the quarter at fourth and one, Weber followed the line for a first down and a few plays later Zeleny got a fast break and went 30 yards in to the end zone.  14-0

Nebraska Lutheran found the end zone with 2:57 left in the first quarter.  Their two point attempt was intercepted by Dylan Bonds. 14-6.

Casey Jindra sped down the sidelines into the end zone to bring the score to 20-6.

It was Weber in next to tack on eight more points for the Bobcats with one minute left in the half 28-6. 

Beethe got an interception with 33 seconds left on the board but the Bobcats couldn't capitalize on it. 

With 4:45 left in the third quarter Nebraska Lutheran put eight points on the board 28-14.

Although penalties were tough on the Bobcats they benefited from a double penalty committed by Nebraska Lutheran and gained a first down to get Max Zeleny close enough to add eight points to the scoreboard 36-14. 

Nebraska Lutheran recovered a Bobcat fumble and converted it into six points to bring the final score 36-20.

The final regular game of the season for the Bobcats will be at home in Milligan against Cross County.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Word Collectors

Word Collectors in Exeter-Milligan Library

This year the theme for Library is "Word Collectors". Peter H. Reynolds wrote the book “The Word Collector” and published it in 2018. It is about a boy who collects words and uses them in his writing. He not only collected the words, he put words together to make them more powerful. In the end, he shared his collection of words with the world. “The Word Collector” is a nominee for Nebraska’s Golden Sower Award in 2020.

Each week students check out a book and are asked to find one word in their book that week which is interesting to them. Through discussion the students realized that books have the best words because the writer wants to keep you interested in reading the book. 

The students bring the word to Library and they add the word to their “Word Collector” booklet (K-2) or to Google Keep (3-6). Third through sixth grade students look their word up and add definition to their word. After students put the word in their booklets, they decide what word around the room it might fit best with. We discuss whether it is a noun or verb, adjective or adverb or possible a person, object, animal, feeling, direction, action. They then hang the word on the wall under the word they feel it fits best. They are excited to share their words with the class each week.

As students write throughout the year, they have a collection of words to refer to. This collection will help them develop a powerful piece of work as well as grow their vocabulary and knowledge on different types of words.

Exeter-Milligan Updates: Math

Mary Kay Pribyl’s Algebra I class at Exeter-Milligan is finishing their unit on equations.  The students are playing a game of Kahoot to review solving equations.
