Exeter-Milligan Foreign Exchange Student Anna Bettu

Anna Bettu has been planning her foreign exchange experience for the past four years.

She is already enjoying her school year at Exeter-Milligan with her host family, Allen and Carri Vavra and their three children.

Bettu was born in Brazil but now lives in Germany about 45 minutes from Stuttgart.

She waited until she was done with her schooling so that she wouldn’t have to worry about going back to it in Germany, “I already had all of my classes in Germany –this year is a refresher in English.”

Also in Bettu’s plans were lots of new experiences.  So far, she has found softball and band to be new and different for her as she just finished the season playing with the Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan softball team. She really enjoyed both, especially the encouragement that come from the other members of the groups.

At home in Germany, Bettu is an only child so she has especially enjoyed having siblings Kaitlyn, Andrew and Aidan Vavra.  She claims “It is very good to have siblings.  It’s so fun.  I am far from being homesick.  I do miss chocolate, especially full milk chocolate and dark chocolate.”

At home her Mom runs a butcher shop while in Brazil her dad farms andd he also has a brewery.

This month will be especially busy for Bettu as she is working on her applications to brewmaster school.  She hopes to be a brewmaster and will need to be accepted at a brewery first then she will attend three years at a brewer school in Germany.  After that she plans to continue her schooling in international business management.  

Now that fall is approaching Bettu is hoping that the mosquitos will leave with the colder weather as they seem to really be attracted to her. 

 

All in all Bettu is having a great year.  She hopes to improve her English and learn a lot about American culture to take back with her.

Exeter-Milligan One Act Play

Exeter-Milligan one-act members are working on the play “The True Stories Of The So-Called Big Bad Wolves” by Richard Gremel. The stories of Little Red Riding Hood, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and The Three Little Pigs are twisted around in this one-act comedy when the wolves are tired of being accused of being “big and bad” all the time.  They have gone on strike until they can tell their side of the stories to the people.  The main characters decide to allow the wolves to share their side, but only this one time.  

The cast of characters include Katie Skinner as Jack Wolfe, P.I.; Haylee Sheffield as Harriet Howl; Katie Moody as B.B. Wolfington; Ella Wilkins as Red Riding Hood/Mother/Penelope; Samantha Horne as Granny/Father/Pinky; and Nick Hayek as The Woodsman/Timmy/Hammy.  Cast and crew members have been working hard to develop the set and characters for this funny, entertaining twist of the children’s stories.  

Please join the one-act cast and crew and FCCLA members for a dessert luncheon at Exeter-Milligan Public Schools at the Exeter site, in the gym area on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. They will be performing the play to prepare for competition.  A huge thank you to Mrs. Vossler and the FCCLA for providing the delicious refreshments.  Thank you to the lighting and sound crew including James Becker and Patrick Murphy.  The crew members of Quinton Behrens, Kayla Bonds, and Katie Moody have created a creative set for the play with the help and direction of art teacher Mrs. Lisa Kanode.  They have done an amazing job with the set.  Other crew and makeup members include Tara Mueller, Destiney Fairbank, Alexis Uldrich, Claire Mounce, Sean Gibson, Ashley Benorden, Katherine White, and Katie Mounce.   Mrs. Barnhart is the one-act director.  Thank you to all of the community members who have brought in items to aid in the development of the stage and costumes.

            The one-act play conference competition is scheduled to perform on Wednesday, November 16th at Shickley Public School.  Exeter-Milligan will perform second for the one-act plays.   The final performance will be at the district competition on Wednesday, November 30th held at Meridian Public School.  Exeter-Milligan will perform in the middle of the day for districts.  Please come to support the students in their performances for the one-act play.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Fifth Grade Colonies

Ms. Brooke Neville’s 5^th grade class at Exeter-Milligan recently started a Social Studies unit about the original 13 Colonies. The class chose colonial style names to go by during each lesson.  A few students' names were Cotton, Obadiah, and Susanna.  At the end of the unit they made Johnny Cakes, a cornmeal-based pancake, and drank Apple Cider.

The advanced math class has begun their study of trigonometry.  We have studied the basic trigonometric functions with right triangles and the unit circle.  We have also solved right triangles and used right triangle trigonometry to solve application problems.  We are now learning the law of sines.  Shown are Kelsey Bigelow, Alexis Uldrich, and Eric Olsen as they demonstrate to the class the possible number of triangles that can be formed with various given information.

District #4 Leadership Conference

October 6^th, 2016- Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) brought student leaders, members, and advisers to Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska on October 6^th to participate in its annual District Leadership Conference. 330 FCCLA members from 8 different chapters attended the Conference this year.

            The conference provided great opportunities for the students and advisers to come together to attend some truly inspiring sessions. The theme of this year’s conference was “Piecing it Together with FCCLA” and attendees were challenged to put together the little pieces in life to make the big picture.

            In addition to the many learning experiences at the conference, chapter members were greeted by State officer Taryn Goodban and PEER Ed Team officer Dylan Lase. Both officers talked about how excited they were to attend the conference and what exciting things members have to look forward to later this year.  This year District #4 had the opportunity of watching a presentation by Revolution. Revolution was started in 1998 by the Children’s Service Director at the Center for Survivors. It is a grant funded group which strives to inform teens about the dangers of dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Revolution’s members were high school students from Columbus, NE. Other sessions offered were dancing with Alex, York Women’s prison, Alcoholism, Culinary Art, Royal Family Kids Camp, STAR Projects, and Nebraska State Patrol.

            The afternoon keynote featured Sara Hinds, who recently returned from Japan as a part of the FCCLA Japanese Exchange Program. She discussed what activities she did on her trip and how different and similar the two cultures were. She shared some beautiful pictures and stories about her travels.

            Exeter-Milligan’s FCCLA 31 Chapter members were in attendance.  Samantha Horne led the conference as District #4 President.  Chapter President Haylee Sheffield led a presentation session on Royal Family Kids Camp.  Previous STAR competitive events participants shared their experiences of doing STAR projects and displayed their previous STAR projects to be seen by all District #4 FCCLA members. Chapter members donated puzzles and color books for the Royal Family Kids Camp.

            FCCLA, “The Ultimate Leadership Experience” is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by its members. It Is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities help members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.

November 6- FCCLA/One Act Play Dessert Luncheon begins at 2 p.m.  Please join us as the cast presents, “True Stories of the So-Called Big Bad Wolves” followed by a lovely and delicious dessert luncheon.

The FCCLA meeting previously set for Nov. 7th has been moved to Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6:15 p.m.  See the attached flyer in the newsletter for the presentation on Human Trafficking that will be held that evening.
