Exeter-Milligan Update: First Grade Readers

1^st Grade Happenings by Sharon Lott, E-M First grade teacher

Our Reading Goals every day in First Grade are: Phonics-knowing that words are made up of letters for reading; Phonemic Awareness-understanding that words are made from small units of sounds; Fluency-being able to read with speed, accuracy and expression; Vocabulary-knowing words in order to communicate with one another; and Comprehension-understanding what a text is all about. We accomplish these goals each day with Reading Mastery, Core 5, and Academic Games. Students are playing "I Love Bugs" game practicing vowel pairs in the picture.

Death Notice: Arlan J. Becker

Funeral mass for Arlan will be 10:00 am Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter, Nebraska with Father Steve Thomlison officiating.

Public Visitation will begin Monday from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Monday evening at 7:00 pm at the Farmer Funeral Home

Memorials are directed to the Exeter American Legion in lieu of flowers.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Construction class and Woods class

In Dean Filipi’s Woods class at Exeter-Milligan, Peyton Brandt (below) built this nice gun cabinet.  Meanwhile, in Construction class (above), Johnathon Mounce, Joan Strate, Cameron White, Evan True, Evan Harre, Kyle Jindra and Trystan Brandt are constructing a square gazebo for a cemetery by Milligan

Exeter-Milligan Competes at McCool Junction

Cameron White took second in shotput and the discus at the meet.

Trystan Brandt won the long jump and the triple jump at the dual with McCool Junction.

Patrick Murphy achieved his personal best in high jump at the dual with McCool Junction at 5'8".  Fellow Timberwolf Trevor Luzum won the event with a new personal best of 5'9"

Katherine White just leads team member Hannah Beethe in the hurdles.  White won the 100 high hurdles and the 300 hurdles.  Beethe took second in both events.  White also won the triple jump and the 200 dash.

The Timberwolves met the McCool Junction Mustangs for a dual meet which was moved up a day due to weather.  The tracksters had the opportunity to participate in multiple events with just two schools participating. 

Exeter-Milligan Fifth Grade Classroom

Exeter-Milligan’s fifth grade classroom has just eight students but they make the most of their opportunities to have new experiences.

Each week one fifth grader is responsible for the Telecare program.  This has been a project for the fifth grade classroom for a number of years.  Each school day, the fifth graders call senior citizens in Milligan and Exeter and spend a few minutes checking in with them.

According to teacher Miss Sara Lincoln, “This program benefits the fifth graders in many ways.  The fifth graders learn phone etiquette, responsibility for calling each week, and they practice caring for others and building those relationships.”

And the benefits go both ways as the seniors have someone to check in on them each day.  “The fifth graders calling the seniors is sometimes the only contact many of them may have each day so  hearing from the fifth graders really makes their day,” explained Lincoln.

The class has had the opportunity to have breakfast with their senior citizen friends once this year and will invite them into the classroom again before the school year is over.

Having such a small class is unique but Lincoln has enjoyed it, especially because, “they each have such different personalities.”

The students are just starting to study the Revolutionary War in Social Studies and will be learning about history through a play they will get to perform.  The students may say that the best part of the day for them is for recess or PE but, Lincoln, sees things a little differently,  “I think they have enjoyed the science experiments and different activities we do with our Science and Social Studies lessons.  They really enjoy these hands-on activities.”

Lincoln will be teaching first grade at Exeter-Milligan next year.

Exeter-Milligan Update: World Dance Class

Prom is near and Mr. Jordan Marr's world dance class at Exeter-Milligan is getting in the "swing" of things by learning east-coast swing.  The class previously attended a class at the Del Ray Ballroom in Lincoln where they learned the basics of west-coast swing.  Pictured from L-R are Elliot Erdkamp, Jack Dinneen, Katie Skinner, Brayden Olsen, Hanna Klose, Janey Due, and Hunter Worrell.
