Exeter-Milligan Update: One Act Play Dessert Luncheon

The FCCLA and One-Act of Exeter-Milligan Public Schools will be hosting a Dessert Luncheon on Sunday, November 8, 2015 for the public to a performance of  The Director by Clint Snyder directed by  Mrs. Valerie Barnhart.  Mrs. Mary Lou Vossler and the FCCLA will be providing the desserts for the day.   Please come to support the one-act cast and FCCLA in their efforts.

       The one-act play cast are memorizing their lines and developing their characters for the upcoming conference and district competitions.  Many of the students accepted several roles in the play for this year.  As the director, I commend the students on their ability to

adjust to the different characters.  The play pokes fun at the theater department’s attempt at combining three plays - A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Streetcar Named Desire and an experimental freeform body piece - into one production as a result of budget cuts.  The actors are asked to cope with an egotistical director, read lines from greasy napkins, and suffer through the director’s warped interpretation of the play.  It promises to have the audience laughing from beginning to end.  

 

        Exeter-Milligan will be the final school to perform at the conference meet at Cross County Schools on November 18, 2015 at approximately 5:30 P.M.  Districts will be at Johnson-Brock Public Schools on December 2, 2015.  We welcome any of the community members to come and watch the performances those days.

Exeter-Milligan Update: FCCLA Trick or Treat So Others May Eat

Exeter-Milligan FCCLA Annual "Trick or Treat so Others May Eat"  Food Drive was held on Saturday, Oct. 24th.  Ten FCCLA members collected 654# of non-perishable food items in the communities of Exeter and Milligan.  Thank you to the communities for their generosity.  Blue Valley Food Pantry was very appreciative of the donations as their pantry shelves were running low.  This annual event allows both communities the opportunity to provide food for some of our own residents. 
Also helping were, Mrs. Karla Sheffield who assisted as a van driver for the event and Mr. Lindley Schlueter, who helped with the delivery of the food items to the food pantry.

Exeter-Milligan Tops the Sterling Jets

 Luzum carries again making a first down.

 Sterling's defense was tough but Sam Zeleny #3 found the end zone anyway.  Two of E-M's touchdown's were called back for penalties.

The Timberwolves won the defensive battle with #15 ranked Sterling 42-6.  Sterling scored late in the fourth quarter.  The Timberwolves #96 Jack Dinneen blocked a punt which was recovered by #48 Cameron White for a Timberwolf touchdown.  After the first half the score was 14-0 with the Twolves tacking on 14 more in the third quarter.  The Timberwolves really found their rhythm in the second half adding 14 more in the fourth quarter to cap off the win. Sam Zeleny caught two interceptions on the night.  The Timberwolves will meet Kennesaw on Wednesday in Milligan.

Exeter-Milligan Sub-District Volleyball

Exeter-Milligan(#1) will meet #4 Dorchester in sub-district volleyball at Fillmore Central High School on Monday, November 2 at 5 p.m.  Winner of that match will play the winner of Hampton vs. Meridian.  Go Timberwolves!

Exeter-Milligan Welcomes Giovanni Tadini

The Exeter-Milligan community has welcomed Giovanni Tadini as a foreign exchange student this year.

Tadini, from Bergamo, Italy in the northern part of the country, is thoroughly enjoying the good life in Nebraska.  His host family is Dwayne and Cheryl Luzum and he spends a lot of time with their grandson Trevor Luzum, a junior at Exeter-Milligan.

He and Trevor have bonded, “He is like my brother.  His twin, Hailey, she is close too, but a little shy.  Trevor’s parents are great, too.”

The Luzum’s outfitted their basement for Tadini and Trevor.  He was thrilled with his new “home.”

Tadini decided to give the foreign exchange student experience a try, “I wanted and to know and view another culture.  My life in Italy was ok, but I wanted a new experience and language. I wanted to improve my English.“

Tadini had lots of English classes in his schooling but it was “scholar English.  In the summer we can go to England for one month to practice our English which helps but I think for my future and to work anywhere in the world you need to learn English.”

So far, Tadini is enjoying the freedom that America offers.  In Italy he drives a motorbike but he just recently got his learner’s permit to be able to drive a car.  

Part of the appeal  for Tadini is the difference in amount of time he is spending studying.  “In general I study a lot in Italy.  Here I can work in school and have some homework but I get to do sports here.  It is like a big family here.  It is completely different and better.”

He has joined the Exeter-Milligan football team this year and is really enjoying the opportunity.  So far, during the regular season he has had  few opportunities to play.   “Coach Filipi is very kind to let me play with these guys.  I like football. At home I try to swim three or four times a month. I don’t have time because I have to study all the time.”

While he isn’t missing his school work, he does miss his family and friends. So far he isn’t missing the food at home, either.  “I can find what I want here. They have pasta at the grocery store.  Part of the experience is trying the food.”

So far the most unusual item he has tried is a Runza  and he liked it.

Tadini plans to try all of the sports at Exeter-Milligan.  He is enjoying the challenges in America, “I am learning about life and about being far from home.  I am having to learn how to live with this family because it’s not my family.”

He will have a lot of decisions to make when he returns to Italy.  “Next year I have to choose which direction I want to go to in the future.  It will be my fifth year of high school and I have to choose what I want to do.  I am not sure as there are a lot of question marks about my future.  Maybe I will be a doctor like my dad or go work on the farm that my family owns and my mom manages or maybe be an engineer.”

So far the Nebraska experience has been wonderful for Tadini.  He is enjoying his host family, “I think I am very lucky they are very kind. “

Halloween Story Hour

Halloween is drawing near, and the Exeter Public Library is celebrating! Two Halloween story hours are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31 at the library. A session for ghouls grades preschool-kindergarten will be held at 2 p.m. Goblins in grades 1^st-3^rd are invited to come the later the same day (Saturday) at 4 p.m. We will read a story, have a special Halloween snack, and do a spook-tacular craft! Costumes are encouraged!

Exeter-Milligan Update: Blanket Making

As part of 4-H in the classroom, Allion Brahm’s sixth grade class at Exeter-Milligan completed their service project this past week. They helped two residents in the community clean up their yards, as well as, picking up sticks and trash at the ballfield in Milligan. They also made a tie blanket, decorated cookies and delivered them to members of the Milligan community.
