Libraries Change Lives Declaration in Exeter

The national Declaration for the Right to Libraries campaign has come to Exeter. The Declaration is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA), aiming to build the public will and continuing support for America’s right to libraries.

In libraries across the nation – including the Exeter Public Library -- citizens have the opportunity to visibly declare the right to have thriving libraries in their community. Libraries have the power to change lives, and play a special role in rural communities. The opportunities for lifelong learning and strengthening families are only a few gifts libraries offer their communities.

The Exeter Public Library will display the Declaration for the Right to Libraries throughout National Library Week (April 12-18). Their goal is to obtain 100 signatures during this time. Whether you are a card-holding patron, or just passing through, your signature is valued by the library as a show of support. Help Exeter’s library reach its goal by adding your name to the Declaration.

Exeter Public Library Celebrates National Library Week

National Library Week is April 12 – 18, and the Exeter Public Library is getting in on the action with activities commemorating the event. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.  This year’s theme is “Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library”.

The Exeter Public Library has begun the celebration a day early, hosting a “Fancy Nancy Tea” on Saturday, April 11. The tea was inspired by the popular children’s book series “Fancy Nancy” written by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. Sipping pink punch from vintage tea cups and reading a Fancy Nancy book were just part of the fun!

During the week, the Exeter-Milligan TYKE students and their teacher, Kristi Most, have planned a visit to the library. The kids will have a story read to them by librarian Jessica Votipka, and get a tour of the library. As part of the field trip, the children will have the opportunity to explore the “Unlimited Possibilities” at the Exeter Public Library, such as puppets, movies, books and puzzles.

The recognition of National Library Week also includes participating in the nationwide campaign “The Declaration for the Right to Libraries”. This document symbolizes the importance of libraries to communities, families, individuals and institutions. Stop by the library to sign the declaration – the Exeter Public Library’s goal is to get 100 signatures.

Also part of the Exeter Public Library’s “Unlimited Possibilities” is the purchase of new “plugged-in” furniture, thanks to the Kreutz Bennett Donor-Advised Fund. The library was awarded a grant last year to create a central location for the library’s technology resources. The Kreutz Bennett Donor-Advised Fund, an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation, provides support to public libraries located in Nebraska communities with populations under 3,000.

Throughout National Library Week, Exeter Public Library will be giving away bags containing a few “freebies”.

Exeter-Milligan Fifth Grade Classroom

Exeter-Milligan’s fifth grade class has been learning through action this year.  They recently finished one of their larger projects, a Revolutionary War play. 

The students did an excellent job on the project and first year teacher Miss Sara Lincoln was very pleased with the results, “I enjoy how hard this group works.  Anytime I ask for their best they go above and beyond.  I have come to know that when I ask them to do something, such as a project, they will exceed my expectations.  I also enjoy how happy each student is and how much they seem to enjoy school.  They are truly a great class!"

Each day Lincoln’s class starts about the same as the students add their points to an app called Class Dojo, call local senior citizens for the Tele-Care program and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Their mornings are spent in read, spelling and math before they have a recess and then eat lunch.  In the afternoon the students have social studies, writing or science and their “specials” which include music, keyboarding, library and p.e.  They always end they day by talking about the things they need to remember for the next day at school.

Soon the class will be starting their science projects relating to energy.  Lincoln plans to guide the students in performing several simple experiments in their chapter on energy.

Lincoln has found this first year of teaching very rewarding, “ This group of students is unique because they find a friend in each person in their class. Each group project we have done, they act as if their group is their best friend.  Which for many of them is probably true.  They are such a likeable group of kids and always happy and ready to help.  This group is always ready to achieve their best and eager to do better the next time.  They have been an absolute joy to teach my first year.”

The fifth grade has more fun events to look forward to in the rest of the year including a field trip, some science projects and field day.
