Exeter-Milligan Update: Title I

A strategy that I have started using with some of the Title I reading students is using polyester colored overlays.  They come in 10 colors: blue, light blue, green, blue-green, non-glare, red (pink), orange-red, smoke(gray), yellow, and reddish-yellow(amber).  The overlays are used to help those with reading difficulties which might include slow reading rate, losing their place, poor comprehension, eye strain or fatigue, headaches and vision dyslexia.  The colored overlays change the wavelength of the light hitting the retina in the eye.  The student is to try them all and see which one has the sharpest, clearest, or most stable images.  Sometimes it is helpful to use a colored overlay and then put the non-glare one over that to take the shimmer off of the overlay.  Students think that using a colored overlay is fun as well.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Bossaller Places Second At MUDECAS Speech

Congratulations to Toni Bossaller, Exeter-Milligan senior, on her 2nd place finish in Poetry Interpretation at the MUDECAS conference speech meet Saturday, February 1, 2014. The next speech meet for the Timberwolves will be February 15, 2014 at Meridian High School.

Exeter-Milligan Student Chosen for Young Artist Award

                                    

BRANDT TO RECEIVE YOUNG ARTIST AWARDS

    Jordyn Brandt, a Junior at Exeter-Milligan High School, has been selected to receive two awards from UNL- Hixon-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, honoring her accomplishments in the areas of flute and piano.  The Nebraska Young Artist Awards are presented annually to high school juniors for recognition of outstanding talent in the areas of music performance - instrumental or vocal, music composition, visual art, dance, and theatre arts.  To apply students must submit an audition and letter of recommendation from their teacher or private tutor.  Students may audition in up to three areas. 

    Students selected to receive awards will spend the day at UNL on April 9. They will attend a special luncheon with faculty, tour the campus, learn about classes offered at UNL and opportunites in the arts, and attend performances by UNL students.  The day will conclude with an awards ceremony held at the Sheldon Museum of Art. 

Exeter-Milligan Junior High Participates in Vocal Clinic

The Exeter-Milligan Junior High Choir performed “Blowin’ in the Wind/America” under the direction of Mrs. Angie Murphy at the Crossroads Conference Junior High Vocal Clinic.

 

Local Junior High Students participated in the Crossroads Conference Junior High Vocal Clinic held at Hampton High School on Monday, February 3.

The Guest Clinician was Sheri Fraley who is a music specialist at Elliot Elementary in the Lincoln Public School District.

Fraley graduated from Doane College and UNL were she obtained her Master’s Degree.  She has taught vocal and instrumental music to all ages of students for 17 years.

Participating schools in the clinic were Cross County, Dorchester, Exeter-Milligan, Giltner, Hampton, High Plains, McCool Junction, Meridian, Osceola and Shickley.

The students spent the afternoon rehearsing both music and technique with Fraley.  The four numbers the combined choir performed were “Ching a Ring Chaw,” “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning,” “Inscription of Hope,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Four of the schools performed as individual choirs including Hampton, Shickley and Giltner.  Exeter-Milligan performed “Blowin’ in the Wind/America.” Guests were invited to listen to the 5 p.m. performance.

Over 250 students participated in the Crossroads Conference Junior High Vocal Clinic held in Hampton on Monday, February 3.
