Get Ready for Exeter Fun Days!

The weekend of July 19^th through July 21^st looks to live up to its designation as Exeter Fun Days.

Starting on Friday, there will be community garage sales starting at 4 p.m. and the co-ed softball tournament will kick off at 6:30 p.m.  The evening’s entertainment will be karaoke at John E’s Bar, Grill & Keno starting at 9 p.m.

Saturday has full day of activities planned with the community garage sales city wide, the co-ed softball tournament and the Chamber hosting a Waffle Feed at the Legion from 8 – 10 a.m. Boy Scout Troop 270 will have a food stand at the softball field from 11 – 1p.m.

Also starting at 8 a.m. will be the Junk in Your Trunk sale just south of Greg’s.  The street will be closed to traffic so shoppers can browse until noon for trunkful’s of treasures.  There will also be a Craft and Vender fair at the Legion from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Library will be holding their book sale from 8 – noon.

If shopping isn’t up your alley then head to the Fire Hall at 9 a.m. for a bullhead fishing tournament.

The afternoon is all about the kids with activities like face painting, sand art and a corn cash dig downtown in front of Speece Chiropractic from 1 – 5 p.m.

For the afternoon swimming is free at the Exeter Aquatic Center starting at 1:30 p.m.  Don’t forget to stop by the Legion at 4 p.m. for an hour of Bingo with prizes provided by the Exeter Chamber of Commerce. 

The Kids and Pets Parade will be held downtown at 5 p.m. just before the Exeter Volunteer Fire and Rescue BBQ, Beer Garden and Street Dance starts.  Featured acts are Rusty Nichol and Who’s Bill Anyway from 5:00 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Sunday’s activities include free swimming at the aquatic center starting at 1:30 p.m., the continuation of the softball tournament (if needed) and a bubble making contest at John E’s at 2 p.m.

These events are sponsored by and will benefit the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department and the Exeter Chamber of Commerce.  The event is also being supported by the Fillmore County Visitor’s Committee, Perennial Public Power District and the American Legion Post 218.

Hall Honored at Bloodmobile

Stephanie Mousel, Donor Recruitment Representative for the American Red Cross, holds that certificate that was presented to Doris Hall at the Exeter Bloodmobile for the many years that Doris has coordinated the event.  Hall was also honored with a cake and presented with flowers.

During the American Red Cross Bloodmobile in Exeter on Friday, June 28^th Doris Hall was recognized as she retired from close to 25 years of coordinating the event.

Donor Recruitment Representative Stephanie Mousel was on hand to honor  Hall and presented her with a certificate of achievement which noted that Hall has helped collected over 735 units of blood with the American Red Cross.  Both knew that Hall had coordinate the drive to collect more than the certificate listed but some of the records weren’t available. 

Hall has passed her duties on to Barb Jansen who now coordinates along with the continued assistance of Ruth Ekeler.  Hall has enjoyed coordinating the blood drive all these years “It’s the satisfaction of knowing I’m helping people.  After Leonard died (her husband) I started donating blood and that became coordinating and I’ve stayed with it after all these years.  I wasn’t looking for a job a job but it found me.  It does feel good not be in charge anymore.”

Hall noted some changes that occurred on her watch including the coordination of the bloodmobile stops between Exeter and Fairmont.  “It took a lot of effort but we finally got the area churches on board (to serve lunches) and got the Red Cross to coordinate taking turns hosting the bloodmobile between Exeter and Fairmont.”

Hall has always found the community support for the event to be outstanding, “We always have a great turnout and are now even booking appointments for the next bloodmobile in Fairmont.”

The next area Bloodmobile will be in Fairmont on August 23^rd.

Another Successful Bloodmobile

 

First time donor Erica Yound is all smiles as she is prepped to give blood.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile was held in Exeter on Friday, June 28^th.

This month the goal for Exeter was 37 units and there were two important difference makers in helping the group collect 42 pints.  Primarily it was the eight individuals who gave double red units counting for 16 pints.  Second of all it was the two first time donors, Exeter-Milligan incoming seniors Erica Yound and Meredith Emshoff.

Dave Bristol and Meg Becker were presented with four gallon pins by Mousel.  Coordinator Barb Jansen was so thankful for so many who donated, “Thank you to everyone who gave blood and helped with the bloodmobile.  We always need donations of blood but this time of year we are especially in need.”

It takes lots of volunteers to help the bloodmobile happen including unloaders, loaders, escorts, greeters and the UCC church ladies group who made and served the lunch.  Donors also were served some of the cake that was presented to Hall in honor of her years of service to the American Red Cross.

The next area Bloodmobile will be in Fairmont on August 23^rd.
