Exeter Milligan Holds Annual Outdoor Ed Day

It's become a tradition at Exeter-Milligan for the high school students in Lorie Sliefert's Biology II class to spend a day teaching all about nature to their counterparts in the Exeter-Milligan second.

 

Outdoor Ed Day began when Marla Weber, Exeter-Milligan second grade teacher, had the idea for the program as a college student.

 

Each year Weber shares idea packets with Sliefert's class of juniors and they choose a subject from the ideas offered they would like to teach to the second graders. The packet guides the juniors to create hands-on fun activities that are easy for the juniors to teach and interest everyone. One of the favorites for the juniors in this year's event was a senses station where students listened, tasted, touched and smelled different objects. 

 

Some of the other stations, all taught and directed by the twelve high school students, included hug a tree, making pinecone birdfeeders, learning about the wind, and playing some ecological games.

 

Second grader Wesley Ronne liked the new GPS scavenger hunt the best, "My favorite game was geocaching.  We had to walk to make the GPS work."

 

This was a scavenger hunt that required the second graders to use coordinates on the GPS to find items the high school students had hidden in Gilbert's Park. With the day of the event being unseasonably cool and cloudy Sliefert wasn't sure if the active games were more popular because everyone warmed up when they were moving around or if the kids just enjoyed those activities more.

 

The students all enjoyed playing Bat and Moth which simulates how bat's find their prey and how moth's have to be quiet to not be eaten. With all of the activities the students even created lots of items to bring home with them including a rainstick, a plaster cast of animal prints, a timeline of the events in their short lives written like tree rings, the journal they kept all day and a weathervane.  The items are dual purpose according to Weber, "The students make it for fun and then are able to take the items home to their parents. Telling about the items reinforces the lesson and also helps the students explain to their parents what they did." 

 

Both teachers emphasized the opportunity that this event holds for the high school students, "It's really a win-win for both of the classes," said Weber, "the elementary students have role models and learn that they have to listen to the high school students and at the same to it's an opportunity for the high school students to interact and demonstrate what they know."

 

Sliefert noted that "It boosts the older students self-esteem, they can feel positive about themselves knowing that they can pass on their knowledge to the younger students."

Exeter-Milligan elementary students will play their last soccer games of the season Saturday morning in Geneva.  The fourth, fifth and sixth grade team will play at 9 a.m. The second and third grade team will play at 10:30 and the Pre-K, K and first grade team will play at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Exeter-Milligan students enjoyed a week of "Kicking It Old School" for their 2011 Homecoming celebration.

Each day was a different dress-up theme with Pajama Day starting off on Monday.  On Tuesday, each class, along with the faculty was assigned a different decated starting with the 40's.  Wednesday each class was assigned a different color to wear and Thursday was Sports Throw Back Day that sported plented of Milligan Rooster purple and Exeter Eagle outfit's. 

Everyone got into the theme of Friday's Spirit Day and family and friends attended the pep rally held at the Exeter site football field.  The Cheerleaders had games for the senior girls and boys to play and then the faculty led a cheer. The Exeter-Milligan band played and several of the seniors spoke to the crowd.  The Cheerleaders performed a dance routine to pump up the crowd before school dismissed.

After the Timberwolves defeated the Meridian Mustangs 60-8 behind the strong defense of Nate Bigelow, Nolan White and Kyle Jensen.  The Timberwolves scored 30 points during the first quarter with James Sluka scoring two touchdowns, Robbie Androyna, Nolan White and Derek Luzum each scoring one apiece.  Sluka scored another touchdown bringing the score to 52-0 before the Mustangs placed 8 on the board. The final score was a 48 yard run by Jensen.

After the game the Homecoming court was crowned.  Attendants from the freshman class were Madison Horne and Kyle Jensen.  Sophomore class attendants were Brooke Manning and Garrett Pribyl with Taylor Erdkamp and Jacob Kroll representing the junior class.   Becca Vossler and Blake Mark were crowned Duke and Duchess, with Lana Kennedy and Jalen Maxson named Prince and Princess. Claire White and Nate Bigelow were crowned the Exeter-Milligan 2011 Homecoming King and Queen.  They were presented gifts from the student body by Quinten Loontjer before pictures and heading to the dance.

Exeter-Milligan Update: First Grade News

First Grade students have been learning about the Pledge of Allegiance. They are learning what the big words mean. They watched a video given to us from the Legion. They will be explaining the meaning of the pledge at our Grandparents Day program on October 21.

Exeter-Milligan Update: Pre-Calculus

Mary Kay Pribyl's Pre-Calculus students at Exeter-Milligan are covering a unit on analyzing graphs.  We have studying many features of the different families of graphs including critical points, end behavior, and intervals in which a graph is increasing or decreasing.  Quinten Loontjer is pictured showing the vertical and horizontal asymptotes and graphing a rational function.

Exeter-Milligan Junior High Football by Brian Murphy

To open the season, the Exeter-Milligan junior high football team hosted East Butler on September 13.  On the opening drive, E-M drove down the field on a five-minute drive.  The drive ended with Sam Zeleny hitting Sean Maxson on a 17 yard pass for a touchdown.  Maxson added the two point conversion.  E-M held an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.  East Butler added a touchdown in the second quarter, while holding E-M scoreless.  Both defenses remained tough in the third quarter, with neither allowing a point.  With the score 16-20, East Butler converted a crucial fourth down pass, that was tipped by two E-M defenders, with just over two and half minutes remaining in the game.  Zeleny ran for touchdowns of 8 and 20 yards in the fourth quarter.  Jack Dinneen added a two point conversion.  The only turnover by East Butler was a fumble recovered by Cameron White.  The final score was Exeter-Milligan 22, East Butler 28.

On September 19, Exeter-Milligan hosted Friend in another close game.  Exeter-Milligan was down by just two points, 12-14 at the half.  Jack Dinneen scored for E-M in the first quarter on a 44 yard end around run.  In the second quarter, Sean Maxson had a 4 yard touchdown run.  E-M scored once more late in the game on a 15 yard run by Elliot Erdkamp.  The two point conversion  pass from Sam Zeleny to Brayden Olsen completed the E-M scoring.  Defensively, Dinneen recovered a fumble for E-M.  The final score was Exeter-Milligan 20, Friend 36.

Exeter Volunteer Fire Department Hosts Junior Fire Patrol

5^th Graders Note To Parents….

Dear Parent,

The Exeter Volunteer Fire Department will again be conducting an extensive fire safety educational program at our fire station. The Junior Fire Patrol program was started in October of 1998 and annually has received overwhelming appreciation from parents. The kids continue to have a fun learning experience. Because of all the positive feed back we have received from the parents, our volunteer firefighters are happy to donate their time. This program is available to all Exeter and surrounding area children.

The schedule includes a total of 4 evening meetings in October. The first class meeting will be held on Monday October 3^rd at 7:00pm. The classes will last 2 hours with completion at 9:00pm sharp each evening. The next 3 class sessions will be on Tuesday’s the 10th, 17th, and graduation on 24th. We provide the kids with sodas and cookie treats each night at the end of class and then annually Casey’s has donated pizza for the final evening after graduation. This program is designed to provide your child the vital, lifesaving skills and information they need to protect themselves and your family from fire and injury. A fire in your home is a very real possibility and your family needs to be prepared.

One child is badly burned every four minutes in this country, 150,000 of them yearly. More children are crippled by fire each year than were crippled in the worst year of the polio epidemic. These children suffer so greatly because they do not know what to do in case of a fire. They are not trained in correct escape procedures. They are naturally curious about fire, but do not always understand the consequences of their actions. We want to make sure that your child never suffers needlessly due to lack of fire safety knowledge.

As a fifth grade student, your child has the privilege of becoming a member of the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department - Junior Fire Patrol. To obtain the elite status as Junior Fire Marshal, they will be required to attend all classes and they will be asked to complete two safety prevention activities in your home. If the child can not attend all classes send them to as many as possible, the Marshal status is reserved for those that meet the higher attendance and other requirements. Each child will need to prepare a Home Fire Escape Plan for your family. They will also be required to inspect their home for fire hazards. To successfully complete these activities, they will need your help. We hope that you will become involved and will cooperate with your child in making your home safe from fires.

Our guarantee is your child will enjoy learning about fire safety, fire prevention and first aid. Parents and children that have participated in the past have each year expressed gratitude to us for putting this program together. As time marches on it is interesting to note that we now have previous graduates of this program that are now adult members of our department. The seeds of long ago are growing to continue helping our community prosper. We are looking forward to seeing your child.

Exeter Cub Scouts Learn About Recycling and Science

Exeter Webelos Cub Scouts from the left Johnny Babula, Peytan Brandt and Cayden Hartmann learned all about water pressure and force while working on their Scientist Activity Pin.

Clint Oldehoeft makes a constellation in the end of a recycled can so that he can put a flashlight on the other end and make a constellation on the ceiling when the room is dark.  His mom, Jill Oldehoeft, stands by to assist him.

Exeter Tiger Cubs, Wolf and Bear Cubs spent their evening learning all about recycling.  They walked around downtown and picked up trash before heading to the recycling trailer and recycling any items they picked up that were recyclable.  Upon returning to their meeting location they made useful items out of recycled items.  The Tiger Cubs made a picture frame decorated with pop and milk jug lids, the Wolf den made a windlass with a recycled tin can and a small milk container and the Bear den made constellation cans. The Bears used a hammer and nail and with a pattern punched a constellation on the top of a can.  When finished they labeled the can with the name of the constellation and then by holding a flashlight up to the can in a dark room could project the constellation on the ceiling.

The Webelos den had a unit on science.  The learned about the Bernoulli principle and about all kinds of pressure.  They tested many of the principles and learned how the pressures interact.  The Webelos had a lot of fun with water and balloons testing air and water pressure.  They completed their Webelos Scientist Pin.
