LOCAL STUDENTS SELECTED FOR WHO’S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES

LINCOLN, Neb. — Several Nebraska Wesleyan University students have been selected for “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Selection is based upon students’ scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, citizenship and service to the university.

NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

INDUCTED INTO HISTORY HONORARY

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nineteen Nebraska Wesleyan University students have been inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, a history honorary. Selection is based on students who complete 12 credit hours of history, maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.40 in history courses, and an overall grade point average minimum of 3.20.

Despite high winds the Exeter community came out as usual to show their respect and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country.

 

The Exeter Cemetery was dressed with the avenue of flags standing at attention.  After the color guard placed the colors, Tim Wilbeck announced the program.  Father Tom Kuffel lead the prayer and the Exeter-Milligan band played the national anthem.

 

Exeter-Milligan seniors Kelsey Moore and Heather Pribyl both read pieces. The Exeter-Milligan choir performed "Oh Brother, My Brother" a piece about the fighting between brothers during the Civil War.

 

Wilbeck spoke about the meaning of Memorial Day, "honoring those who answered our nations call."

 

He also reminded those gathered that "the peace and freedom paid for with the lives of others sacrifice is meaningless without remembering."

 

He called upon those in the crowd to not forget.  "It is the thought that counts, it is personal acts of remembrance as well as public acts."

 

After Blake Papik performed Taps and Jennifer Pribyl played Taps Echo the crowd was invited to a reception at the Exeter American Legion.

 

At the Legion part of the choir performed "Oh Brother, My Brother" again and those attending were able to purchase poppies, see the poppy poster created by Exeter-Milligan students and also see the progress of the Legion Service Member scrapbook.

Exeter Alumni Banquet

The Exeter Alumni Association hosted their Annual Alumni Banquet Saturday with over ten classes represented.  The class of 2001 planned and hosted the event and were seated at the head table.

Each class was recognized during the evening event, sharing stories and introducing class members.  After a welcome from 2001 class member Allison (Michl) Bitz and a blessing by Jena (Tauriella) Johnson, Seth Jensen, a member of the class of 1991, took on his duties as emcee. He recognized Kendall Gloystein who had driven the furthest, from San Antonio, TX.

After the meal, Derek Betka, 2001, welcomed the class of 2011 who were well represented at the banquet. He gave out the awards from the alumni golf tournament.  Kelsey Moore, spoke on behalf of the class of 2011, thanking the alumni association for their invitation.

Jensen, with the assistance of Mitch Becker, introduced the honor classes.  The oldest class represented was the class of 1941, with one member, Leo Soukup, attending.  Soukup gave some poignant remarks talking about how much things have changed and remembering " my Dad gave $45 for a Model T so we could drive it to school, nowadays $45 won't fill up the tank of my car.  Hot lunches were served when I was a senior, before that we brought our dinner from home just like in country school."

Most classes shared a personal story from their years at Exeter and the class of 2011 chose their favorite story which was from the class of 1961, told by Jack Underwood.  They received the Eagle award.

Becky (Harre) Erdkamp spoke on behalf of the Exeter-Milligan School Foundation before Bitz conducted a business meeting of the association and Robyn Manning closed the program invitng all attending to the Legion Home for the alumni dance immediately following the banquet.

The only member of the Exeter Class of 1941 who was able to attend the Exeter Alumni Banquet was Leo Soukup.

Electronic Recycling Event

Free Fillmore County Electronics Collection & Recycling Event

On Thursday, June 2nd from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. individuals, businesses, schools, government entities, and non-profits in Fillmore County may bring old and broken electronics to the East bullpen at 10^th & F Street, Geneva, Nebraska for recycling. Only bring recyclables on the day and time listed.

Computers and all other computer related equipment, copy machines, cash registers, printers, VCR’s, digital telephones and other electronic equipment will be accepted. Televisions cannot be brought, however. Sponsors reserve the right to refuse unrelated items. This event is limited to Fillmore County residents. A grant from Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality is allowing this event to be free of charge.

Recycling provides a positive outlet and ensures that computer metals and other hazardous material contained in electronic equipment will not end up in a land fill or worse. This event is sponsored by and in cooperation with Trailblazer Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D), Fillmore County Development Corporation and Fillmore County. The event is funded by a grant provided by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. If you have any questions contact the Fillmore County Development Corporation at (402) 759-4910.

Exeter-Milligan Graduate Receives Scholarship

P.E.O. STAR Scholarship Awarded


The prestigious P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic 
year, was presented to Kelsey Moore, a senior at Exeter-Milligan High 
School. The scholarship was presented at the Exeter-Milligan Arts and 
Academics Honors Program by Noreen Songster.

Kelsey is the daughter of Brent and Lori Moore and was recommended for 
this scholarship by Chapter AM.  Moore has been accepted and will 
attend UN-L where she plans to study biomedical engineering beginning 
this fall.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship based on 
excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community 
service, academics, and potential for future success.  The program is 
open to young women who are citizens or legal permanent residents of 
the United States or Canada and who are graduating high school seniors 
at the time of application.  A student must be recommended by a P.E.O. 
chapter.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan 
College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is an international philanthropic and 
educational organization which promotes increased educational 
opportunities for women.  There are approximately 6,000 local chapters 
in the United States and Canada with more than 350,000 initiated 
members.  The P.E.O. Sisterhood has given nearly $190 million in 
financial assistance to more than 80,000 women.  The P.E.O. Sisterhood 
also owns Cottey College, a two-year liberal arts college in Nevada, 
Missouri.

Exeter Public Library Summer Reading Program

Exeter Public Library Summer Reading Program: Pack your bag and get ready to travel this summer at Exeter Public Library. This year's theme, "One World, Many Stories," will take you around the world through stories, crafts and activities.  The free programs are for children pre-school through 3rd grade and will start June 3. Programs run through June. Call the library at 266-3031 to register and for program days and time.

The pool is now available for private parties - contact Jackie Miller at the pool to make a reservation. The cost is $50.00 per hour (no additional entrance fees).
Admission Fees:
Ages 5 & Under – Free with Paying Adult
Ages 6 – Adult - $3.00 per day
2010 Season Pass:
Single - $45.00
Family - $90.00 (immediate family only)
Passes are not transferable or refundable.
*Note: There will be at least one 10-minute rest break taken every hour.
GENERAL
Children must be 8 years old to gain admission to the aquatic center without an accompanying chaperon (13 & older).
Patrons must take a shower using soap before entering the pool.
No person having an obvious communicable disease, skin eruption, open sore, lesion, eye, ear, nose, or throat infection shall be permitted to use the pool.
Tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, and glass are prohibited in the pool area. All food and drink must be consumed outside the aquatic center or inside the designated area directly north of the bathhouse.
Coolers, food, and beverages may not be brought into the facility.
Profanity and abusive or vulgar language is prohibited.
Fighting, rough play, pushing/shoving, and running are prohibited.
No spitting or spouting of water or blowing nose in water.
Proper swim wear is required. Street clothes are not permitted in the water.
Infants or toddlers wearing diapers will not be allowed entrance into the facility without plastic diaper covers or swim diapers.
No hanging on safety ropes or buoys.
No sitting, playing on, or diving off ladders.
No pets or animals allowed (other than service animals).
No diving in less than 5 feet of water.
Flotation devices (inner tubes, air mattresses, etc.) are prohibited.
U.S. Coast Guard or Red Cross approved life jackets are permitted.
Soft toys and play items are permitted if they are used appropriately.
Any conduct, behavior, or activity that endangers the welfare, safety, and/or comfort of other patrons is prohibited.
Management reserves the right to close the aquatic center due to inclement weather or lack of attendance.
The Village of Exeter is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal items.
ZERO DEPTH AREA
Children 4 & under must be within arm’s reach of the supervising chaperon. If the child is in the water the chaperone must also be in the water.
DIVING BOARDS
Only one person on the ladder or board at a time. Swimmers must wait on the deck at the ladder entrance.
Only one bounce permitted on the board. Running jumps and starts are not permitted.
Divers must wait for the person ahead of them to reach the pool ladder prior to diving off the board.
Dive straight off the end of the board. No jumps or dives are allowed off to side of the board.
No swimming under or between the boards.
Individuals are not allowed in the diving well to “catch” other divers.
SLIDE
All riders must be at least 48” tall or have prior approval from management in order to ride the waterslide.
Maximum operational load 1 person – 300 pounds.
No combs or foreign objects are allowed in pockets and no jewelry can be worn while riding the slide.
Riders must enter the slide in a sitting position.
All riders must ride feet first while lying on their back. Absolutely no riding on stomach or headfirst is permitted.
Riders should lie on their back with arms crossed across their chest or hands clasped behind their head with their legs crossed at the ankles.
Only one rider at a time. Absolutely no trains or chains of riders are permitted.
No life jackets are permitted on the waterslide.
The line should form on the deck with one rider on each landing and one rider in the starter tube.
Riders must be in good health. Pregnant women or individuals with heart or back conditions or other serious health issues should not use the slide.
Do not use this slide while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Follow instructions of the lifeguard.
No running, standing, kneeling, rotating, tumbling or stopping in flume. Arms and hands must remain inside the flume.
No diving from the flume.
Leave the flume pool promptly after exiting the waterslide.
Water level is 4’ or greater and rider must be able to swim.
LOCKERS
A limited number of lockers are available on a first come, first served basis on the east bathhouse wall. Patrons should bring their own locks, as the Village does not provide them. Lockers are day use only and locks must be removed when you leave the facility. Locker use is encouraged to prevent theft.
The Village of Exeter maintains these rules and policies that govern patron conduct at this facility. In general, any conduct, behavior, or activity that endangers the welfare, safety, and/or comfort of other patrons will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action may range from a one-day to one-year suspension.
Note: Expelled and/or suspended pool patrons will not receive a refund for daily admission or season pool passes.

Aquatic Center to Open Monday - New Additions

 This new aquatic wheelchair will make it easier for caregivers to bring handicapped pool goers into the zero depth entry area.

 The new toddler slide is installed and close to being ready to be used.

The Exeter Aquatic Center is scheduled to open for it's third season on Monday, May 30th starting at 1:30 p.m.  New this year to the pool will be a toddler slide and an aquatic wheelchair.

 

The toddler slide is a turtle and is placed in the zero depth area so that small children can slide into the shallow area of the pool safely.  The aquatic wheelchair is all plastic and can be wheeled into the pool.  The sides move away for easy maneuvering.

 

The two new items were made possible by donations and grant money.  Rhonda Stokebrand, a former manager of the pool and pool committee member has faithfully pursued raising the funds for these two projects.

 

The Village received $1,500 from the Mary F. Tous Charitable Foundation, to go toward both of the items, along with $400.00 from the Fillmore County Foundation. The Fillmore County Hospital donated $95.00 from their denim days fundraiser toward the wheelchair and the United Methodist Women donated $100.00 toward the wheelchair.

 

Other donors to the project included Kenneth and LaVonne Guthrie and Harre Brothers.

Exeter-Milligan School District Personnel Changes

Exeter-Milligan school board has accepted the resignation of four teachers and the elementary principal at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.

 

After working in the district for 10 years Elementary Principal Mari Lyn Poppert submitted her resignation in February after her husband Jon, a former Exeter-Milligan Elementary Principal and current Superintendent at Giltner accepted the Superintendent position at St. Paul, Neb.  The family is moving to St. Paul this summer.

 

Also leaving the Exeter-Milligan district are Karen Kahler, the fifth grade teacher who is retiring after 28 years in the district and fourth grade teacher Susan Wait who has taught in the district for two years.  Wait is headed to Beatrice where she will be a reading specialist for the district.

 

At the high school level, Grant Gabel is leaving after teaching science for two years, he is headed to his hometown of Shelby, Neb.  Chris Lewandowski, secondary history teacher and technology coordinator has accepted a position at Malcolm, Neb. after coaching and teaching at Exeter-Milligan for ten years.

 

So far the district has filled all of the vacated positions. Mrs. Laura Kroll who has served as the reading program coordinator for the last two years will assume the duties of elementary principal.  Mrs. Shelli Mueller, an Exeter graduate who has taught in York for the past few years will be teaching the fourth grade at the Milligan campus while Mr. Brent Zoubek who comes to the district from Dorchester will be teaching fifth grade.

 

Joining the secondary staff will be Matt Nicholas and Jordan Marr. Superintendent Paul Sheffield "looks forward to starting the new year with some new people on board" and reminds the public of the open house at both campuses on Friday August 12th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. where the community is invited to tour the school and visit with the current and new faculty.
