Exeter-Milligan Brings Home the Hardware

Exeter-Milligan Track students found some success in Omaha over the weekend at the State Track meet. They medalled in seven categories with the boys taking individual event medals, and the girls picking up several medals in the relays and an individual medal.

Congratulations to Shane Manning who took the gold medal in Class D State Pole Vault with a 13'2" vault.

Ryan Harre took home a pair of bronze medals in the 100 Meter at 11.253 and the 200 Meter at 23.311 .

The 1600 Meter relay team of Taylor Erdkamp, Mariah Bigelow, Heather Pribyl and Jennifer Pribyl took 7th place with a time of 4:21.148

The 3200 Meter Relay team of Heather Pribyl, Taylor Erdkamp, Alicia Bigelow and Jennifer Pribyl took 4th with a time of 10:15.804 .

Jennifer Pribyl also picked up 5th place in the 800 Meter run with a time of 2:27.244.

Brooke Poppert (2nd Grade) was Exeter-Milligan Elementary's

Obituary Barb Becker

Barbara Jean (Powers) Becker was born to Max and Vera Mae (Klone) Powers on April 1, 1943 in York, Nebraska. She passed away peacefully on May 15, 2010 in her home in Exeter, Nebraska at the age of 67.

Barb graduated from York High School in 1961. On October 20, 1962 she was united in marriage to Thomas Becker of Exeter at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. They had four children: Jacquelyn, Paul, Stephanie, and Jamie.

Barb's pride and joy were her 10 grandchildren. From the moment they were born, she loved holding and spoiling them as much as her children would allow! She was always willing to lend a hand and babysit when called upon. Barb thoroughly enjoyed her every-other-weekend visits from her sister, Pat. Together, they enjoyed running to York shopping and going out for dinner, playing cards, and laughing about anything and everything. Other interests included: Music, Husker Sports, and collecting Angels. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Exeter Senior Center. Barb truly loved animals, especially her dog, Cheyenne.

Throughout her life in Exeter, she was a day care provider and was employed at the Exeter Drive-In and the Exeter Care Center. She was an active member of the Exeter United Church of Christ and Women's Fellowship organization.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Max Powers and Vera Mae Hueske.

She is survived by her sister and best friend, Patricia Powers of Lincoln, her children Jacquelyn (Greg) Yound of Exeter, Paul (Julie) Becker of Omaha, Stephanie (Thom) Kastrup of Omaha, and Jamie (April) of Columbus. Ten grandchildren: Anthony, Travis, and Erica Yound, Claire and Paige Becker, Katherine and Elizabeth Kastrup, Caitlin, Brayden, and Hailey Becker. Step Father:Al Hueske of Beatrice.

Memorial services were conducted from United Church Of Christ in Exeter, Nebraska on Wendesday, May 19, with Rev.s Tim & Ginny Adams officiating. Diane Hanson accompanied Jessica Ruhl who sang ' Amazing Grace' and 'Hear I Am Lord'. Inurnment was in the Exeter Cemetery with Farmer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials are directed to the United Church of Christ (Exeter, Nerbaska) or Adopt-A-Pet .(York, Nebraska)

Get Ready to Slide Away as the Exeter Aquatic Center is Set to Open May 31st

The new slide is assembled at the Exeter Aquatic Center. Exeter Village summer employee Richard Erdkamp touches up some paint on the slide while a crew from Mid-Plains Electric installs the time and temperature display on the bathhouse and Village Maintenance Supervisor John Mueller uses a power washer to clean the "winter gunk" out of the pool before filling it with water.

After the Memorial Day program in Exeter make plans to head to the Aquatic Center in town to take a turn down the new slide in Exeter.

Two groups of volunteers spent many hours assembling the new slide and it's many pieces. Heavy equipment was also donated by local business Horizontal Boring and Tunneling to help move the very heavy ladder pieces over the pool fence. Their crane truck, and operator Paul Erdkamp helped hold the pieces in place as they were assembled. Nearly all of the Exeter Village Board members were on hand to help with assembly of the stair parts.

On Friday, May 14th, another crew gathered to assemble the flume. John Mueller, Village Maintenance Supervisor, along with Bob Mueller, Jim Mueller, Brian Petro, Keith Mathieson and Alan Michl spent the evening on the project.

The slide was paid for with funds from the additional sales tax that was passed two years ago to pay for the bond for the pool. The monthly amount that the village has collected has greatly surpassed the projected income. Unfortunately, the bond will not allow funds to be paid in advance so the Village Board opted to purchase the slide with these extra funds. Future bond payments will be higher but the current income from the city sales tax will cover most of that cost.

The Village plans to open the Aquatic Center on May 31st and anyone can enter the drawing at local Exeter businesses to take the first slide down the new slide.

Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten Graduation

It was all smiles for the Exeter-Milligan Kindergarten class as they graduated from Kindergarten on Wednesday, June 19th. Fourteen students walked in wearing their mortar boards as Pomp and Circumstance was played. They were accompanied by Jordyn Brandt and Meredith Emshoff on the piano.

The students performed If You're Happy and You Know It with a modified last verse about moving on to first grade. They also performed From the Inside Out about character.

Kindergarten teacher Judy Kassik and Elementary Principal Mari Lyn Poppert presented the students with Kindergarten Diplomas, Book It awards, Field Day ribbons and attendance awards.

Parents and family members cheered the students on as they each received special medallions that were purchased by the Exeter-Milligan Booster Club.

After the ceremony guests and participants were invited to a cookie and punch reception in the Kindergarten room.

Exeter Foundation Receives Challenge Grant

Richard and Louisa Manning help begin Foundation’s drive to establish endowment for Exeter and Fillmore County.

Exeter, NE, May 19, 2010: The Exeter Area Community Foundation of Exeter Nebraska has been offered a $50,000 challenge grant by Richard and Louisa Manning of Geneva, Nebraska. Manning’s who are both graduates of Exeter High School issued the challenge grant for the purpose of building an unrestricted endowment for the Exeter Area Community Foundation Fund, an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation. In order for the full grant to be received, the Exeter Area Foundation must raise $100,000 of additional funds over a three-year time frame.

The challenge grant and funds raised for the endowment will be used by the Exeter Area Community Foundation to focus on grant making for community development efforts, which ideally will lead to community population growth, job creation, building local leadership capacity and additional wealth retention to sustain the community of Exeter and the surrounding area into the future.

Exeter Area Community Foundation Fund Chairman Alan Emshoff expressed his gratitude towards the Manning’s. “We are very grateful for the generosity that Dick and Louisa have shown towards the Exeter community. Our fund is fairly new, and this challenge is just what we needed to get us started to do good things for the community.”
