Another successful Blood Drive

The Bloodmobile in Exeter on Friday, June 26th collected 28 pints of blood for the American Red Cross.

The event, coordinated by Doris Hall and Ruth Ekeler, had 35 donors come with six deferrals and one non productive.

The ladies from the United Church of Christ in Exeter provided the lunch with Norm Yound, Sterling Dyer, Alva Smith and Butch Jansen serving as the unloaders. In the canteen were Elva McBride, Barb Becker and Dianne Hanson.

Mary Wince donated orange juice, Erma Adamson donated the cups, the First National Bank in Exeter donated napkins and the Exeter Care Center donated goodie bags and bottled water. Donating cookies were Cindy Carrigan, Pat Schoenholz, Eyvonne Johnson and Doris Hall.

Several donors reached milestones in their donations including Lynn Strate who earned a one gallon pin. Two gallon pins were earned by David Bristol, Anita Mueller and Kurt Kleinschmidt. Lois Thomsen received her four gallon pin.

Assisting as greeters were Bonnie Cudaback, Marci Manwarren and Tess Moor. Escorts for the afternoon event were Sharon Dyer, Frances Becwar and Evelyn Michl.

The next area blood drive will be held in Fairmont on Friday, August 28th noon to 5:30 p.m.

Exeter Public Library Summer Reading Program Finale

The audience loved the play about sharks and fishes (just like the three little pigs).

The older group of kids in second and third grade performed a play for the kindergarten and first grade class.

The Exeter Library Program "Be Creative at your library" ended on Monday, June 29th with a special program for the kindergarten through third graders. The students enjoyed a bean bag color toss, a game of musical chairs and then the second and third graders performed a play they had practiced for the younger group. The students had the opportunity to learn about all of the different facets of creativity and the arts. After the program prizes including a puzzle and book bags were drawn for, bean bags and puppets were passed out and all of the participants enjoyed fudgsicle treats.

Opening Day at the new Exeter Aquatic Center!

The Exeter Aquatic Center opened with a free swim day for everyone on Sunday afternoon. Lots of comments were made about the new pool looking smaller until the kids got in it. With three separate sections for swimming the pool seemed a lot larger. Lots of kids and parents came to watch with over one hundred signed in for the day. A number of community members visited during the afternoon, some enjoying tours of the new facitility and some just watching the kids. The new zero entry area was a kit with kids and parents alike. Pool single and family passes are available for sale at the pool and at the village office.

It's a go! Ready for occupancy!!

The Village of Exeter was given the green light to open the pool as schedule on Sunday afternoon. Thursday afternoon saw inspections from both the health department and the fire marshal and both approved the opening. The pool will hold its regularly scheduled hours on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Preparing for the final inspections of the pool has occupied this last week. Not visible in the pictures, Village Maintenance Supervisor John Mueller was busy cleaning the construction debris off the streets around the pool. Family passes are available for purchase now at the village office. Get yours before the pool opens on Sunday to avoid "the rush"!!!

Being creative at the library!

Librarian Nina Bartu reads the kindergarten and first graders a story while they learn about having talents at Summer Reading Program.

The kindergarten and first grade kids from Exeter met at the library Monday morning for another session of their Summer Reading Program. They have definitely been creative and learned about all different branches of art. Under the direction of Librarian Nina Bartu the group has explored, music, colors and today they learned about "talents." This week the preschool group will meet on Wednesday at 10:00 and the second and third graders will meet on Friday at 10:00.

The last session of Summer Reading Program will be on Monday, June 29th will all participating age groups invited.

What Can You Recycle in Exeter?

Exeter Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered around the information on the new battery recycling program. The Exeter Earth Day Extravaganza was held on Saturday, May 2nd in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful/ Great American Cleaup weekend.

The Exeter Girl Scout Troop 390 and Cub Scout Pack 218 organized the event to educate the community about recycling opportunities in Exeter.

Attendees were invited to tour the new recycling trailer with long time Exeter area recycler, Joyce Votipka. Votipka explained what types of materials should be recycled and how they should be prepared for recycling. Under the appropriate bin, the girl scouts had created posters showing the type of item in the bin and how that material is recycled for future use.

After the tour, participants were encouraged to take the sorting relay challenge. They were given a bag of mostly recyclable materials and as the cub scouts timed them, they sorted the items into boxes that were labeled like the trailer. Several "trick" items were placed in the bag for the sorters to find.

During the event, door prizes were awarded as well as prizes for several contests. The Exeter-Milligan students were asked at school to pick a name for the new trailer and the winner was announced at the extravaganza. Fifth grader Elliot Erdkamp entered the name "Mr. Green" for the contest and his name was chosen. Erdkamp put the name on the trailer and was awarded a free pizza coupon donated by Casey's for his prize winning entry.

On display near the trailer was a sample pile of how much one family can recycle during a two week period. There was also a contest to guess how many lids were in a quart jar from bottles recycled during a month. Peytan Brandt and Kaitlyn Vavra both were correct with their guess of 40. They each received a cloth shopping bag with a battery recycling bucket and a piggy bank.

Many of the door prizes were donated by Public Health Solutions as part of a campaign to recycle batteries. One of the tables at the event was devoted to educating Exeter residents on the new battery recycling program now available A collection box for used single use and rechargeable batteries has been placed at the Exeter library. Piggy banks made completely of recycled electronics were given away in hopes of encouraging the use of rechargeable batteries to save money. Also given at the event were buckets to collect batteries for recycling.

Extra informational materials, coupons for greener living, and kids booklets from the event are available for free at the Exeter Library. At the end of the Earth Day celebration hot dogs and cans of pop all donated by local businesses were served.

Sponsors for the event included First National Bank in Exeter, Murphy Plumbing, Erdkamp Motors and Casey's General Store. Assisting the scouts were members of the Exeter American Legion Auxiliary Post 218.

Car Wash Today!

Don't forget - the Exeter-Milligan Cheerleaders will be having a car wash from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Hall on Tuesday, June 16th. Freewill donation with a $5 minimum!
